The present invention relates to improvements in printing presses, and more especially to those of the class employing a printing cylinder and an inking cylinder and cooperating form rollers for 5 supplying ink therefrom to the printing cylinder for printing on a continuous travelling web of paper or other material, the present application being a division of my prior application Serial No. 115,622 filed December 12, 1936.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel and improved inking mechanism for supplying ink to each printing cylinder, the inking mechanism comprising an inking roller and form rollers for supplying the ink therefrom to the respective printing cylinder, the form rollers having novel means for mounting them whereby they are adjustable in a direction toward and from the inking roller and also capable of being set in different positions around the axis of the printing roller.

Roller mountings according to the present invention are applicable generally to printing presses of the well known class wherein a continuous web of paper or other suitable material travellingthrough the press is-printed upon by revoluble type rollers or printing cylinders which are supplied with ink by cooperating form rollers. A portion of a press of such class is shown in the present instance wherein I and 2 represent the side frame members of the press in which the printing and inking rollers may be'journaled, 3
representing a revoluble type roller or printing cylinder which prints upon the travelling web, t representing a pair of form rollers which transfer the ink to the printing cylinder, and i representing the inking roller which supplies the ink to the form rollers, the inking roller 5 receiving the ink from an ink transfer roller 1 which, in turn, may receive ink from an ink fountain or other source of any suitable or well known form. The rollers 4 which serve to transfer ink from the inking roller 6 to the printing cylinder 3 are driven frictionally by contact with the inking roller, and the roller 1 which supplies the ink to the inking roller 6 may also be driven frictionally from said inking roller. The inking roller 6 may be driven from the usual train of gearing or other suitable means through an idler gear 8 which meshes with a gear 9 fixed on the shaft iii of the inking roller 6. The shaft ill of the inking roller, as shown in the present instance, is journalled in roller bearings H in the frame members I and 2 to permit axial reciprocating movement of the inking roller as it revolves, and thereby insure uniform distribution of ink along the length of the form rollers 4, such reciprocating movements being imparted to the inking roller by a worm 12 which is fixed on its shaft IQ and meshes with a worm wheel I3 journaled in a casing M, the worm wheel having a crank 55 fixed thereto which is connected by a link it to the frame member l. The casing is revoluble on but held against axial movement on the shaft iii by a shoulder ll and a collar l8 fixed thereon, and the casing is guided'by a pin 19 which is fixed to the frame member l and slidably engages in a lug 20 on the casing, so that as the inking roller shaft revolves it will be reciprocated axially by the rotation of the crank l5, as more fully shown and described in my prior application hereinbefore referred to.
According to the present invention, the form rollers 4 are mounted adjustably relatively to the inking roller 6 so that they may be adjusted in directions both radially thereof and also around the periphery thereof in arcs concentric with the axis of the inking roller. The mountings for these form rollers are shown more particularly in Figs. 3 to 9 inclusive. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the bearing housing 2! in each side member of the frame and supporting the respective end of the shaft 10 of the roller 6 is surrounded by a,
plate 22 which is fixed to the respective side member of the frame as by screws 23, this plate having a groove 2B in its inner face which is concentric with the axis of the ink roller shaft [0, the plate 22 having a pair of lugs or ears 25 projecting therefrom to provide supports for the mountings of the form rollers 4. Each of these mountings comprises a plate 26 adapted to fit against the inner face of the plate 22 and having a rib 21 of segmental form adapted to fit into the circular groove 24 in the inner face of the plate 22. Each of the plates 25, as shown in Fig. '7, is formed with an approximately radially elongated slot 28 through which passes a bolt 29 having an eccentric head 38 thereon which lies in an elongated counter-bore 3! surrounding the slot 23 in plate 26. The bolt 29 extends through an eccentric sleeve 32 which is fitted rotatably in a cylindrical hole 33 in the plate 25 and the adjacent side member of the frame, the outer end of this eccentric sleeve having capstan holes 34 therein to receive a rod or tool for rotating it, and the outer end of the bolt 29 has a nut 35 threaded thereon. A set screw 36 may be threaded into theside frame to engage the eccentric sleeve 32 and thereby lock it in different positions into which it may be rotated. The bolt 29 is also preferably formed at its outer end with a squared or other suitably shaped portion 371 to'receive a wrench for rotating it. By this arrangement, by loosening the nut 35 and rotating the bolt 29, theeccentric head 30 of the bolt will act on the plate 26 to move it in an arc around the plate 22, the rib 2'. on the plate 26 guiding the latter so that it will move in an arc concentric with theaxis of the ink roller shaft it, and by rotating the eccentric sleeve 32, a further arcuate movement of the plate 25 on the plate 22 may be obtained, since such rotation of the eccentric sleeve will shift the bolt 29 in an arc around the ink roller shaft. Tightening of the nut 35 will lock the bolt 29 in adjusted position and tightening of the set screw 36 will lock the eccentric sleeve in adjusted position.
Each end of the shaft 5 of each form roller 4 is ,journalled in a bushing and each of these bushings is clamped in a split bearing 4i. Each of these bearings is mounted adjustably on the respective plate 26 so that it maybe adjusted in a direction substantially radially of the axis of the inking roller shaft it. As shown more particularly in Figs. 3, 6, 7 and 9, the plate 26 is formed on its inner face with a groove 42 and the contact-ing face of the bearing 4! is formed with a rib 43 which fits into said groove so that the bearing 4i may be adjusted longitudinally of said groove, and the bearing 4| is secured in different adjusted positions with respect to the plate 25 by a clamping screw 44 which extends through a an elongated slot 45 in the bearing 4! and is threaded in the plate 26. Means is provided for adjusting the bearing 4! longitudinally of the groove 42 in the plate 26, such means comprising a screw 46 which is threaded into the bearing 4! and is provided with a lock nut 41, this screw having thrust collars 48 fixed thereon and engageable with opposite sides of a fork 49, the latter having a stem 58 which is forced tightly into a hole 5! bored into the plate 26, and the extremity of the screw 46 is provided with a squared or other suitably shaped portion 52 to receive a wrench for operating it. By this arrangement, by loosening the lock nut 41 and rotating the screw 46 in the appropriate direction, the bearing 4! will be adjusted on the respective plate 26 in a direction approximately radially of the axis of "the inlL'ng roller shaft IE, and by tightening the lock nut 41 and the clamping screw 44, the bearing will be held firmly in its desired adjusted position; Accordingly, the form rollers 4 for the inking roller 6 are so mounted at both ends that they may be adjusted around the periphery of the respective inking roller and. between it and the printing cylinder 3 in anarc concentric with the axis of the inking roller and may also be adjusted substantially radially or in a direction toward and from the inking roller, to insure the proper reception of ink from the inking roller and the transfer thereof to the printing or type cylinder with which they cooperate.
The ink distributing roller 1 is driven frictionally by contact with the inking roller 6. Such distributing roller may be mounted adjustably as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the shaft 6!! of the distributing roller being journalled in a bushing 6| which is clamped in a bearing 62. This bearing is secured to the respective side member of the frame by a clamping screw 63 which extends through aslot E4 in a plate-like extension 65 attached to the bearing, the screw being threaded into the respective side member of the frame, the slot 64 extending in a direction which enables the distributing roller to be adjusted toward and from the inking roller with which it cooperates, and tightening of the screw 63 secures the distributing roller in its adjusted position.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a printing press, the combination of .a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, members one having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller and the other member having a cooperative arcuate rib for supporting the form roller for adjustment in an arc concentrically of the axis of the inking roller, and means for adjusting the form roller in said arc.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, members one having an arcuate groove concentric with the axis of the inking roller and the other member having a cooperative arcuate rib for supporting the form roller for adjustment in an arc concentrically of the axis of the inking roller, means for adjusting the form roller in said arc, and means for locking the form roller in such an adjusted position.
3. In a printing press, the combination of a I printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a mounting having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having an arcuate guide member thereon cooperative with the arcuate guide of said mounting, and means for adjusting said bearing on said mounting about an axis concentric with said guide.
4. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a mounting having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having an arcuate guide member thereon cooperative with the arcuate guide of said mounting, means for adjusting said bearing on said mounting about an axis'concentric with said guide, and means for clamping said bearing against said mounting to hold it in adjusted position.
5. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying.
ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a mounting having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having a guide member cooperative with the arcuate guide of said mounting, and meansincluding an eccentric between said mounting and bearing for adjusting the latter relatively to the mounting about an axis concentric with said arcuate guide.
6. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a mounting having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having a guide member cooperative with the arcuate guide of said mounting, means including an eccentric between said mounting and bearing for adjusting the latter relatively to the mounting about an axis concentric with said arcuate guide, and means for clamping the bearing to said mounting to hold the bearing in adjusted position.
'7. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a plate mounted in fixed position relatively to the axis of the inking roller and provided with a guide concentric with said axis, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having a guide cooperative with the guide on said plate, and an eccentric connecting said plate and bearing and operative, when rotated to adjust said bearing concentrically of the axis of the inking roller.
8. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder,
a plate mounted in fixed position relatively to the axis of the inking roller and provided with a guide concentric with said axis, a bearing member supporting the form roller and having a guide cooperative with the guide on said plate, an eccentric sleeve connecting said plate and bearing and operative, when rotated, to adjust the bearing concentrically oi the inking roller, and a bolt rotatable in said sleeve and having an eccentric portion thereon engaging the bearing and operative, when said bolt is rotated, to adjust the bearing concentrically of the inking roller.
9. In a printing press, the combination of a printing cylinder, an inking roller for supplying ink thereto, a form roller for transferring ink from the inking roller to the printing cylinder, a mounting member having an arcuate guide concentric with the axis of the inking roller, a bearing member for the form roller having an arcuate rib thereon cooperative with said arcuate guide of the mounting member for supporting the form roller for adjustment in an are concentrically of the axis of the inking roller, means for adjusting the form roller in said arc, and means for adjusting the form roller in a direction substantially radially of the inking roller.
10. In a printing press according to claim 7, wherein said bearing member embodies two parts which are relatively adjustable in a direction substantially radially of the axis of the inking roller, and means for relatively adjusting and locking said parts.
