The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which assures a greater degree of control of the ling characteristics without reliance on the individual skill of the operator than is afforded by prior devices, and thereby to secure a better and more uniform result with a saving in time and labor.
Other and further objects residing in the details of construction will be apparent from the s following specication and claims.

Referring to the drawings, reference character l generally indicates a clamp or vise for holding the saw blade during the iiling operation and which is preferably adapted to be secured to a table or bench by any suitable means as indicated at il in Fig. 2. Clamp H3 comprises two jaw members i2 adapted to be clamped against the saw blade by a screw I3 provided with a wing nut i4. Preferably the lower ends of the members l2 are provided with a quick release lever l5. The outer clamp member is provided with spaced lugs i5 pivotally receiving side l1 of the rectangular frame I8, the lugs i3 being provided with set screws i9 for holding the frame in predetermined adjusted position in the lugs i3. The opposite side of frame i3 comprises rod 23 connected to end members 2l telescoping within end members 22 formed by bending the ends of side il at right angles, as best End members 2l and 22 are held in adjusted telescoped relation by set screws 23. A file guide (generally-indicated at 24) is pivotally and slidably mounted on rod 23. This file guide comprises two channel members 25 arranged back to back and held in spaced relation by end blocks 23, said parts being secured together by bolts 2. A supporting block 28 is rotatably and slidably mounted on rod 2l), said block 23 being provided with a longitudinal opening 29 through which rod 2i] passes. Block 28 is pivoted at 30 to one of the channel members and the channel members are adapted to be clamped in predetermined angular relation with the block 28 by means of bolts 3|. A Iile carriage 32 is reciprocably mountedin the upper channel member 25 (see Fig. 3). Said carriage comprises an inverted channelfmember 33 engaging beneath the inturned flanges of the channel 25 and provided at one end with means for receiving one end of the le 34. As 'shown this means comprises a chuck 35 in which ther le non-rotatably engages, the chuck being slidably and rotatably mounted in a post 36 which is provided with a set screw 3l for holding the chuck in adjusted position.` The other end of the carriage is provided with a suitable handle 38 by which the carriage may be reciprocated in the file guide 24. Intermediate its ends carriage 32 is provided with upright posts 33 in the upper ends of which a rod 4B is slidably mounted and held in adjusted position by set screws 4|. The forward end of rodV 4i) is provided with a block 42 in which the outer end of the le is secured by means of a set screw 43. Frame member l1 is provided on opposite sides of the clamp jaws l2 with posts 44 threaded for Vertical adjustment in the frame member and held in adjusted position by nuts 45. The upper ends of posts 4'4 are apertured to receive a stop bar 46 held in place by means of set screws 4l. Adjacent posts 44 are mounted inverted hooks 48 adapted to support a band saw as later described. Hooks 48 are held in vertically adjusted position in member l1 by means of set screws 49.
In operation a saw blade, indicated in dotted lines at 50 in Fig. 2, is clamped in the vise l. Frame I8 is adjusted for height and vertical angle by means of set screws IS and the width of the frame is adjusted to accommodate the desired length of stroke of the le by means oi set screws 23. The horizontal angular relation of the le guide 24 to the saw teeth is adjusted by loosening bolts 3l, turning channel members. 25 to the proper angular relation with the block 28, and tightening the bolts. The carriage 32 is then inserted in the uppermost channel 25.
As best shown in Fig. 2, the bar 43 is passed beneath rod 43 and by its engagement therewith limits the downward movement of the file. The desired degree of depth of cut of the file is therefore secured by adjusting the height of the bar 46 by means of the threaded connection of the nosts 44 in the frame and nuts 4E When the edges of the teeth of the saw have been led on one side, the carriage 32 is slid from the guide 24 and the latter swung 180 around rod 29 when it assumes the position shown in dotted lines at A in Fig. 1. As is obvious the angle of the guide with respect to the saw is thus reversed and the carriage, when inserted in the now uppermost channel member 25, is in position for filing the other side of the saw teeth without readjustment.
In filing a band saw or the like the portion to be operated on is clamped on the jaws of vise iii, the adjacent portions being supported in vertical position by engagement beneath hooks 48 which are adjusted to accommodate the width of the particular saw by means of set screws 49.
I claim: Y
1. In a device of the character described, a clamp for holding a saw blade in xed position, a generally rectangularrframe having telescoping end members whereby the spacing of the side members can be adjusted, oneside member of the frame being pivotally connected, for adjustment, to said clamp, a block slidably and pivotally mounted on the opposite side member of the frame for bodily movement longitudinally of and pivotal movement aboutsaid last men tioned frame member, a guide member pivoted, for angular adjustment, to 'said block for movement therewith, a carriage slidably mounted in said guide way for movement toward and from the saw, spaced clamps Von said carriage for securingthe ends of a le to said carriage substantially in parallel relation to the path oi movement of the carriage in the guide memberv and means to adjust the spacing of said clamps.
2. In a device of the character described, a clamp for holding a Ysaw blade in xedposition, a generally rectangular frame, one side member of the frame being pivotally connected, for adjustment, to said clamp, a block slidably and pivotally mounted on the opposite frame member' for bodily7 movement longitudinally of and pivotal movement about said last named frame member, a guide member pivoted, f or angular adjustment, to said block for movement therewith, a carriage slidably mounted in said guide for movement toward and from the saw, a clamp on the carriage for securing the rear end of a iile, a rod adjustably mounted on said carriage and provided at its forward end with a clamp for securing the forward end of the le, said file clamps being so arranged with respect to thel carriage that the file is positioned substantially in parallel relation to the path of movement of the carriage in the guide member, and a vertically adjustable bar removably mounted on the Iirst ,named frame member and positioned between said rod and the le for engagement by the rod to limit the downward movement of the le against the saw.
3. In a device of the character described, a clamp for holding a saw'blade, a generally rectangular frame, one side member of which is pivoted, for adjustment, to said clamp in parallel relation to the saw, means for supporting and guiding a file comprising a block slidably and` rotatably mounted on the opopsite side member of the frame for bodily movement longitudinally of and for rotation around said last named member, a pair of channel guides arranged in back to back relation on opposite sides of the block with their channels parallel, clamping means for securing the channel guides to the block in adjusted angular position with respect to the saw, a carriage slidably mounted in the uppermost of said channel guides for reciprocation toward and from the saw, and means for clamping a le to said carriage in lparallel relation to the path of movementoi the carriage in the guide member, said carriage being removable from its channel guide to permit reversal of the angle of the guides by a 180 rotation of the block, and the parts carried thereby, about the supporting frame member.
