The present invention relates to adhesive closing means for paper wrappers or other packages of a similar character, the said means being combined with a handle for facilitating ,the carrying of such packages. 'The subject matter of this application is divided from my co-pending application Serial No. 742,506 filed September 1, 1934.

An important object of the invention is to provide a novel gummed tape or adhesive band I having means on the ungummed side for en abling the tape to be drawn from a tape-serving and moistening machine without soiling the fingers.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel gummedtape or adhesive band having loops on the ungummed side, affording means for withdrawing the tape from a tapeserving machine and adapted to constitute a handle for the package to which the gummed tape is applied.

Still ,another important object of the invention is to provide the abovementioned tape or band with transversely extending weakened portions or lines of demarcation so that a suitable portion or length of tape may be drawn from the supply and severed from the remainder of the tape at such weakened lines.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth a and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a top plan view 'of a section of the adhesive band or tape forming the subject of the invention;

Figure .2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view showing the method of withdrawing the tape or band from a machine without soiling the fingers; and

Figure 3 illustrates a partial longitudinal section showing the tape ready to be torn from the web or supply ready for use.

The adhesive band or tape 3 consists of a paper strand provided on the underside with a coating of adhesive and a strong supporting sectional strip I'Lpreferablyhaving a substantial length thereof adhesivelyfsecured at its two ends to the approximate middle of said paper band or tape and to the adhesive surface thereof. In Germany September these two ends each section of the strip I! has a loop l8 that is passed through a longitudinal slot formed in the paper band or tape and the said loop is free from adhesive and forms a handle. The band exceeds in length the length of the slit 3 in the band or tape 3. Each slit terminates in a transversely disposed slot3, one at each end, which facilitates the passing of the loop l8 therethrough from the gummed side of the band or tape to the outer ungummed side thereof and the said strip is of a length greater than he distance between the weakened portions of each section of the band or tape. So long as the paper band or tape 3 remains rolled on a supply coil, the said loop I8 is folded and so located between the convolutions of the coil 4 that its folding point I9 is directed forwardly as shown in Figures 2 and 3. It is therefore possible, as illustrated in Figure 2, to grip the loop with two fingers for the purpose of withdrawing a band or tape section for use.

By means of transverse holes 20 and perforations 2| the paper bandor tape is weakened to such an extent that itcan be torn off easily.

The supporting strip, which otherwise might extend throughout the length of the adhesive band or tape, is formed into sections terminating at the holes 20, in order to more readily effect the severance of the paper band or tape.

In contradistinction to other previously known closures, the loop-forming strip I1 is in the form of sections extending a suitable distance along the paper band or tape 3, and each section of the band or tape comprises a closure having a As shownmost clearly in Figure 1, an'adhesive band or tape 3 of any desired length is provided with transverse openings 20 and perforations 21in any desired spaced relation to enable a desired length of the band or tape to be torn from the remainder of said band or tape. Thus the tape is'severable into appropriate lengths. To the underside or adhesive side of the band or tape 3 is attached a supporting strip H which forms the handle of the closure, said supporting s rip being in sections, but said sections exceed in length the length of the section of the adherive band or tape 3 between the transverse open-' ings 20. This excessive length forms the loop of handle portion l8 of. each section of the band or tape 3, and when the band or tape 3 is rolled, the folding point 19 of each handle portion or, loop lBis directed forwardly as best shown in Figures 2 and 3.

The supporting strip 11 above referred to is adhesively attached to the approximate central portion of the band or tape 3 and such attachment is from a point closest to opening 20 up to the slot 3 and slit 3', from which points the supporting strip projects and extends detached along the upper side of the band or tape 3 for a suitable length to form the handle loop l8. length of the strip beyond the loop which extends toward the slot 3 is adhesively attached to the underside of the band or tape 3 and it terminates close to the other opening 20 of the same section of the band or tape. 7

In order to prevent the band or tape 3 under action of the pulling force on the carrying strip or handle Hi from being torn, reinforcing elements 3 are attached over the supporting strip on the underside of the band or tape 3 adjacent the slots 3.

Although I have herein shown and described only one specific form of embodiment of the.

invention, it will be understood that changes and modifications may be made thereon within the scope of the following claims without departing, from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A carrying band or tape having transversely arranged weakened portions to divide the said band or tape into lengths appropriate for use on packages, said band or tape having a longitudinally disposed opening between. each two weakened portions terminating short of the weakened portions, said band or tape having an adhesive coating on one side, each length of said band mounting a strip of a length longer than the spaces between the weakened portions of the band or tape, each strip having a looped portion between its ends projecting through a longitudinally disposed opening of the band or tape and the portions of each strip at each end of the looped portion being adhesively secured to the band or tape between the ends of the longitudinally disposed opening through which the loop projects and the weakening means of said carrying band.

A closure and carrying strip for packages comprising a band or tape having one side adhesively coated and adapted to be wound in a coil, the said band or tape having a plurality of spaced transversely weakened portions dividing the said band or tape into appropriate lengths and longitudinal slits between the weakened portions terminating short of the weakened portions, a carrying strip for each length between the weakened portions secured to the band at each end of the slit, the said strip having a portion between its ends formed intoa loop extending through a slit of the band or tape from the gummed side to the ungummed side thereof, the said loop being folded on the ungummed side of the band or tape and directed longitudinally of said band or tape in a direction opposite to that in which the band or tape is coiled.

A band or tape for attachment to. a package, said band or tape having a gummed surface for adhesion to the package and a plurality of longitudinally extending spaced openings, supporting strips secured to the adhesive surface of said band or tape and having loops corresponding to the positions of the openings in the band or tape, said loops being inserted in the corresponding openings of the band or tape and folded to lie in close contact with the band or tape, the said band or tape being severable at locations between the zones of the band or tape having the longitudinally disposed openings.

4. A band or tape having an adhesive coating on one side and a number of transversely disposed weakening means whereby the portions of the band may be disconnected one from the other at the weakening means, the said band having a longitudinally disposed slit shorter than the distance between the weakening means, a carrying member having a looped portion extending through the said slit and theends of said carrying member being adhesively secured to the underside of the band between the weakening means.

5. A package-carrying instrumentality comprising an adhesive band, a plurality of spaced and alined carrying strips, each having a looped portion constituting a hand grip on the upper side of said band and having portions beyond each end of the loop underlying the said band and adhesively secured to said band.

6. A package-carrying instrumentality comprising an adhesive band, a plurality of spaced and alined carrying strips, each strip partially underlying the band and having its ends secured to the underside of the band, each of said carrying strips being looped in a central zone thereof to form a hand hold which overlies the upper surface of a portion of said band.

7. A package-carrying instrumentality comprising a band having an adhesive coating on its underside and having openings in spaced relation to each other, a plurality of spaced and alined carrying strips, each strip being longer than the space between the openings and having its ends underlying said band and secured thereto, each of said strips being formed into a loop overlying the upper surface of the said band to form a hand hold.

8. A band or tape having an adhesive coating on one side and a number of transversely disposed weakening means whereby portions of the band may be disconnected one from the other at the weakening means, each portion of said band carrying a strip having a looped portionconstituting a hand grip on the upper side of said band portion, each strip having portions beyond each end of said loop underlying said band portion and adhesively secured thereto.
