Description
F. ZIGANEK PUNCH RETAINER Nov. 22, 1938.
Filed May 13, 1937 3mm Ziya 726, 5
A li /15720721 Patented Nov. 22, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT iC E 2 Claims.
This invention relates to'punching mechanisms and more particularly to an improved punch or work engaging member and a retaining means therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide in combination a work engaging member in the form of a punch or button die and a retaining means therefor so that the work engaging member may 'be-iirmly held in the retaining means or block and, at the same time, so held that the work engaging member may be readily released when it is desired to replace or change such member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a relatively simple punch or work engaging member and the retaining means therefor which will not readily get out of order and which is so constructed that the punch or work engaging member will be held when in operative position in a predetermined position with respect to the retaining means so that the operating portion of the work engaging member will be disposed in the same position with respect to its complementary work engaging member at all times.
This invention is an improvement over the punch retaining means and work engaging member disclosed in my co-pending application, filed concurrently herewith.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawing, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a topplan of the retaining block or the work engaging member.
Figure 2 is a vertical section partly in detail of the retaining means with a punch mounted therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the shank of the punch or work engaging member.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I0 designates generally a block of suitable size and configuration which is adapted to be secured, as by bolts I3 or the like, to a punching mechanism, the block II! being provided with a plurality of holes II through which the bolts I3 are adapted to pass. The block I0 is provided in substantially the center thereof with an opening I2 in which a work engaging member, generally designated as I4, is adapted to engage. The block (01. ave-7e) to is also provided with a second opening is disposed laterally of the opening I2 and communicating therewith through a keyway opening 16.
A second lateral opening I1 is disposed in the block In and communicates directly with the opening "I2 at a point spaced circumferentially irom the opening 1'5. In the present instance, the second lateral opening I1 is disposed substantially from the first lateral opening I5 but 'I, of course, do not wish to be limited to the particular spacing between these two openings l5 and H.
The work engaging member I 4, in the present instance, is disclosed as a punch but it will be understood that this work engaging member F4 may, if desired, be constructed in the form of a button die or the like, which is provided with the usual opening or recess to receive the operating end of the punch. The work engaging member I4 has a shank I8 engaging within the opening I2 and this shank I8 is provided with a plurality of threads I9 which extend partially about the peripheral surface of the shank I8, the purpose for which will be hereinafter described. The shank I8 is also provided with a longitudinally extending keyway 20 which intersects the threads I9 and when the shank I8 is in locked or operative position, the keyway 20 is adapted to be disposed in confronting position to the opening IT.
A key 2| carried by a substantially cylindrical body 22 is adapted to engage in the keyway I6 of the block I0 and is provided with teeth 23 engageable in the threads I9. The body 22 is adapted to engage in the first lateral opening I5 and preferably this opening I5 opens through the inner or upper face of the block ID as does the opening II.
A spring or compressible locking member 24 is disposed in the opening I1 and is of a size such that a portion thereof will project into the opening I2 so that when the shank I8 is in locked or operative position, the inner or projecting portion of the spring or looking member 24 will be disposed in the keyway 20.
In the use and operation of this retaining means the block II) is secured to the desired portion of the punching machine by the bolts I3. The shank I8 is provided on the peripheral surface thereof with a knurled portion 25 which facilitates the holding of the shank during the placement or removal thereof from the block I0. Initially, the shank I8 is so disposed that the keyway 20 will aline with the teeth 23 carried by the key 2|. The shank l8 may then be freely moved inwardly of the block l and by reason of the tapered or reduced inner end portion 26 of the shank [8, the spring or yieldable locking member 24 will be compressed or reduced in size within the opening l1. When the keyway 20 alines with the teeth 23 of the key 2|, the side of the shank l8 alining with the locking member 24 will present a smooth or unthreaded surface to the spring 24 so that the compression of the spring 24 will be such as to reduce the diameter of this spring, rather than to compress the spring longitudinally. When the shank I8 is substantially entirely within the block l0 and the spring 24 is reduced in diameter, the shank l8 may be rotated substantially a quarter turn so that the threads l9 will force the inner end of the shank l8 against the adjacent face of the punching mechanism. Upon rotation of the shank l8 through substantially one-quarter turn, the keyway 20 will be disposed in a position confronting the opening l1, so that the spring 24 may expand and have a portion thereof projecting into the keyway 20 and thus yieldably hold the shank l8 against turning. The work engaging member l4 may then be used in the conventional manner and when it is desired to remove the member [4 from the block ID, the shank I8 is turned in a reverse direction so as to again compress the spring 24 and move the keyway 20 to a position registering with the toothed key 2|. When the shank l8 has the keyway 20 thereof registering with the toothed key 2|, the shank [8 may be moved outwardly of the block Hi.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a punching means, a block provided with an opening to receive a work engaging member and provided with a pair of spaced apart openings communicating with said first opening, a Work engaging member positionable in said first opening, threads carried by said member extending partially about the circumference thereof and terminating in the periphery of said member, said member also having a longitudinally disposed keyway intersecting said threads, a key disposed in one of said pair of openings provided with teeth engageable in said threads, and a helical spring in the other of said pair of open ngs having a portion thereof projecting into said first opening to thereby engage in said keyway to hold said member against turning.
2. In a punching means, a block provided with an opening to receive a work engaging member and provided with a pair of spaced apartopenings communicating with said first opening, a work engaging member disposed in said first opening, threads carried by said member extending partially about the circumference thereof and terminating in the periphery of said member, a toothed key engaging in one of said pair of openings, said member having a longitudinally disposed keyway intersecting said threads, and a helical spring disposed in the other of said pair of openings and engageable in the keyway to yieldably hold said work engaging member against turning within the block.
