LIGHT FIXTURE Original Filed July 50, 1936 invention subsists in the novel method and come departing from the spirit or sacrificingany of Patented Nov. 1 5, 1938 Carl E. Baldauf, LosAngeles, .C'alif., assignor to Clarice; Lienhard, Los. Angeles, 'Califgxf} Refiled for abandoned application SerialNo.
93,441, July 30, 1936. This application July 22, 1938; Serial No zzoaee h Claims. (01. 240-, -7c) I V This invention relates to and has for an object thereof theprovision of alight fixture wherein a bowl, globe or reflector is secured in'placejin such manner as to comprise an efiectivemoisture proof and dust proof enclosure "for a light bulb and its socket. This application: is a duplicate of, and is 're'filed forflabandoned application Serial Number 93,441, filed July 30, 1936.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a light fixture which is constructed and arranged to greatly facilitate the installation thereof in a wallor ceiling or like support and to permit of a ready and easy changing of the bowl and light bulb whereby, after installation, bowls and bulbs of various sizes may be applied as desired.
A further object is to provide a novel and eflicient means for sealing the fixture for preventing moisture and dust from entering the interior thereof.
An additional object is to provide a light fixture which may be readily and easily assembled and disassembled, which provides a novel socket structure and means for securing same in place; which includes an efficient means of detachably securing together a bowlsupporting and adapter plate toan outlet-boxer condulet and also in- .cludes an efficacious means for, clamping and.
holding the fixture to .a wall or ceiling orother support. r v;
With the above and otherobjects in view the bination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form pr'oportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope. of the claims may be resorted to without the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: h Figure 1 is aside elevation of the fixture-of this invention as when installed and shown partly in section.
Figure 2 is a schematic view of the outlet box and light socket unit as when disassembled, parts being separated and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the fixture attaching, sealing and globe supporting means as when disassembled, the parts being separated and shown in section.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the unit of, Figure 2 as when assembled with a larger type'of light bulb socket. a
The present embodiment of the light fixture of this invention, as seenin the accompanying drawing, generally comprises an outlet box I having a threaded socket or extension '2, an adapter and fixture clamp'ingplatetlan attaching hub 4 formed integral with said plate and threadedly and removably engaged with said extension, a light bulb socket 5 held in place 'byfand'forminga seal between said hub and outlet box, a clamping and sealing ring l3 opposed to said plate" and threaded on'said hub, aglobefor .bowl I, and a means 8 for detachably securing said bowl to said plate and for forming a seal there-between.
The outlet box is adapted to be setup on one side (the interior) of a wall or ceiling as indicated at A in Figure 1, and the wires, not shown, are connected with thesocket 5 which is cemented'in a. holder 9 having a flange Ill. On oppositesides of this flange are gaskets ll respectively engagedwith aflange I? on the outlet box and the upper or inner end of the hub 4. Thus when the hub is I screwed up, it clamps the socket 5 in place so as to form a moisture and dustproof seal between the hub and outlet box. The outer shell l3 of the, socket 5'is screwed up on the threaded body of the socket proper and a gasketl l provides a moistureproof sealand non-chipping joint of the porcelain parts of the socket. V
The ring 6 is placed on the inner side of the wall sothatfwhen the hub is screwed in place it threads through said ring andthereby causes the ring toclamp the gasket i5 against the inner side of the wall. Likewise, as the j hub 4 is screwed into the'outletbox, theplate 3 is forced againstthe wallas shown in Figure 1.
light socket 5 liespartly inthe outlet box and partly in the hub in'position to receive the light The means 8for removably securing the bowl or globe Tin place comprises, as here shown, a ring l6 having an inwardly extending globe supporting flange H, a gasket l8 between said flange and globe, a split, resilient ring [9 engaged in a groove '28 and, holding the globe against the flange, an outwardly extending flange 2| remov- With the fixture thus assembled, 'itwill be seen that the bulb screwed in place therein in the usual man- V ner.
ably secured to the plate 3 by fastenings 22, and
a sealing gasket 23, between the plate 3 and flange 2|. j
v It will now be seen that the fixture may be readily assembled and installed and may bedisassembled with equal facility.
It is important to note that the-entire unit comprising the globe or bowl'l, means 8, plate 3 and hub 4, while assembled may be removed by bodily turning the globe to unscrew the hub 4 from the threaded extension 2 of the outlet box.
This will facilitate changing the adapter plate 3 whereby to provide for larger or smaller light bulbs and bowls as desired.
However the bowl may in some instances, depending on the size of the light bulb, have to be removed from the plate 3 before unscrewing the hub 4 and this can be readily accomplished by removing the fastenings 22.
It will be .noted that all joints of the fixture are gasketed and arranged'to provide effective moisture and dustproofseals.
It should also be noted that with this fixture no fastening screws or the like are required to secure the bowl supporting plate in place. The
V fastening means therefor is not visible when thefixture is assembled whereby to improve the appearance of the fixture as a whole and provide for an easier installation and removal thereof.
I claim: r
' 1. In a light fixture, an outlet box adapted to be placed on one side of a wall or ceiling, a threaded extension on said box, a clamping and adapter plate adapted to engage the other side of the wall or ceiling, a hub integral with said plate and threadedly engaged with said extension,
a light socket held in place by and between said extension and hub and extending into the latter,
a bowl and means for securing said bowl to said plate and a clamping ring threaded on said hub and adapted to clamp against the wall or ceiling.
'2. In a light fixture, an outlet box, a threaded extension on said box, a flange in said extension, a clamping and adapter plate, means on said plate for securing a bowl in sealed engagement therewith, a hub formed integral with said plate and having threaded engagement with said extension, a light bulb socket in said hub, a holder to which said socket is secured and which is clamped between the upper end of the hub and said flange and a clamping ring threaded on said hub and being opposed to said plate.
3. In a light fixture, an outlet box, a threaded extension on said box, a flange in said extension, a clamping and adapter plate, means on said plate for securing a bowl in sealed engagement therewith, a hub formed integral with said plate and having threaded engagement with said extension, a light bulb socket in said hub, a holder to which said socket is secured and which is clamped between the upper end of the hub and said flange and a clamping ring threaded on said hub and being opposed to said plate, said plate and bowl therein being detachable as a unit upon unscrewing said hub from said extension.
