' nil c. w. PLOEN Er AL CYLINDER 000 Filed Sept. 28, 1936 llllWlH Patented Nov. 15, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CYLINDER COCK Curtis W. Ploen, Chicago, 111., and Augustine It. Ayers, Shaker Heights, Cleveland, Ohio, assignors to The Okadee Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application September 28, 1936, Serial No. 102,924 1 Claim. (01. 121-134) The invention relates to automatic cylinder the casing; a spring l'l between cap l6 and cocks. plunger II with its ends held in sockets in said One object of the invention is to provide an cap and plunger for normally unseating the valve improved automatic cylinder cock which com- 1; a lateral offset I9 of the casing 6 containing a I prises a spring for opening the drain-valve, which chamber 20 which communicates with the cham- 5 is enclosed but located outside of thehigh tember 2& around the valve 1; a pipe 2| connected perature steam cavity of the cock. By reason to the offset l9 which leads from one end of the of this location, the spring can not foul the moveengine-cylinder a to subject one side of valve 1, ment of the cylinder cock in the event the spring when it is closed, to engine cylinder pressure; a 10 becomes broken, can be easily examined and repipe 18 threaded into one side of the casing 6 10 placed without dismantling of the cylinder cock, to deliver steam from the boiler to the cylinder l0 and is not affected by the high steam temperain the casing, for exerting pressure against it to tures in the cock. close the valve 1 against the force of spring l1 Another object of the invention is to provide and the steam under cylinder pressure acting on 5 means located in the cap of the casing by which the other side of the piston 9. The differential 15 the drain-valve can be closed and kept closed in areas on the opposite sides of piston 9 and valve 1 the event of a broken pipe in the line' which are such as to permit the engine-cylinder pressupplies steam from the boiler for closing the sure, when it becomes excessive or abnormal, to drain-valve, while the engine is operated to peropen the valve 1 and relieve such pressure.
mit the operation of the locomotive until repairs In practice, one of these cocks is applied to each 20 can be made, and also to close the cylinder cock end of the cylinder, as well understood in the when the locomotive is undergoing a hydrostatic art. Pipes 18 from the ends of the cylinders are test, connected to a common pipe 23, which leads to Another object of the invention is to provide a the engine-cap and is there provided with a valve cylinder cock with a casing which is provided for controlling the delivery of steam under boiler 25 with a plurality of inlets which makes the cylpressure to the cylinder H! for operation of the inder cock symmetrically applicable to the right piston 9 and valve 1, as well understood in the or left-hand cylinders, or to be differently posiart. In the operation of the improved cylinder cook,

Fig. 4 is a section on line in the cab to admit steam from the boiler which 40 4-4 of Fig, 2, is greater than cylinder pressure, into one side The invention is exemplified in a cylinder cock of cylinder ID. This will shift piston 9 to the left comprising a casing 6; a valve 1 adapted to close and force the valve I against its seat 8. If, duragainst a seat 8; a piston 9 integrally formed with g the ope n of he e g ne and While the valve 1 and slidably mounted in a cylinder 10 valve 1 is closed, any excessive or abnormal con-- 45 formed in the casing 6; a head or plunger ll dition develops in the cylinder, such as a slug of integral with a stem, extending outwardly from water, the pressure in chamber 20 will be suffivalve 1 and through the valve-seat 3 and slidably cient to force the piston 9 to the right against the guided in a cylinder l3 formed in an e t n i n force of the steam in the outer end of cylinder I0,

tension l3 of the casing at the opposite end of The location of the spring is an important fea- 55 polygonal terminal screw may be securely locked in position. The head 28 is provided with an inture because it is located outside of the high temperature steam cavity 2|] in the casing 6. When the spring is located in the high temperature steam cavity around the valve 1, it is subjected to superheated steam temperatures, which is likely to cause breakage and if the spring becomes broken when located in such cavity, it sometimes fouls the movement of the valve. In the construction set forth, the spring I! is 10- ture because it is located outside of the high temperature because it acts on a plunger on the valve stem I2 which is located in an extension of the casing beyond the drain cavity M. This location also makes it possible to readily examine the spring upon removal of the cap l6 and to readily replace the spring without dismantling the cylinder cock. The valve seat 8 is formed in a ring 8 of heat-treated non-corrosive metal, which is pressed into a socket in the casing and around the ring.
In practice, it sometimes occurs that it is desirable to close the cylinder cock, for example, in the event of abroken steam pipe. It is also necessary to close the cylinder cock when the locomotive is undergoing a hydrostatic test. In order to permit the valve to be held closed, a screw 26 extends, and is threaded, through the cap l and is provided at its outer end with 9, whereby the screw may be turned and at its inner end with a head 28 which is adapted to engage a stem 29 integral with the piston v9 and valve 1. By turning the screw 26, its head 28 will engage the stem 29 and force the valve 1 against its seat. A lock-nut 30 is applied to the outer'end of screw '26 so that the its inoperative wardly flared annular face and the cap is. provided with a correspondingly tapered annular seat against which the face on the head can be forced by the screw. This makes it possible to prevent the leakage of steam around the screw Without the use of packing and by screwing the flared face tightly against the seat.
In practice, it is desirable to adapt the cock so it can be reversibly positioned with respect to the engine cylinders. For this purpose, the offset IQ of the casing is provided with a screwthreaded opening 32 in both the upper and lower walls of the ofi-set I9. A screw-plug 33 is adapted to close one of the openings while a pipe 2! is connected to the other. The plug 33 and the pipe 2| may be screwed into either wall of the casing as desired, so the casing can be reversed with respect to the engine.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what We claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an automatic cylinder-cock, the combination of a casing provided with a drain-port, a piston within the casing, means for communicating boiler-pressure to one side of the piston and cylinder-pressure to the other side, a valve operable by said piston to close spring for opening the valve, a the casing, and a screw in closing the valve, the screw having a head at its inner end provided with an inwardly flared annular face, the cap having a correspondingly tapered annular seat against which the face on the head can be forced by the screw to prevent the leakage of steam around the screw.
