Description

F. W. ROBINSON.
Straw Carrier.
No. 21,367. Patented Aug. 31, 1858.
N. PETERS. Phutnillhngmpher. Washington, D. c.
F. W. ROBINSON, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
STRAW-CARRIER OF THRESHING-MAGHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,367, dated August 31, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. W. ROBINSON, of Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Carriers to Threshing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure. 1 is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 shows the perforated floor F. Fig. 3 shows the shaft G and appurtenances. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same parts shown in Fig. 3.
A, A, B, B, C, C, constitute the frame of a common straw carrier.
D, is the endless chain of slats that carries the straw. It is constructed in any common form, and is operated by a belt upon pulley E.
e, 6, Fig. 3, are two pulleys that actuate the endless chain, D.
F, is a perforated platform, composed of thin boards about sixteen inches wide secured to light battens running lengthwise of the frame or platform. This platform forms a sort of diaphragm immediately be low the upper part of the endless chain of slats, D, closing the entire area of the interior of the straw carrier, thereby preventing the straws from passing downward through the endless chain of slats. It is hinged upon pins h, k.
G, is a shaft placed transversely upon the forward end of the frame of the straw carrier. It has upon it pulleys E, e, e, and knockers g, g.
g, 9,. are knockers secured upon shaft G, immediately inside of pulleys e, 6. They are square blocks of iron as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The battens of platform, F, rest upon these knockers and the platform receives a vibratory motion from them when they revolve.
The object attained by this invention is the prevention of the straw from passing down through the endless chain of slats and choking the riddles.
The contrivance for vibrating the platform is not deemed absolutely essential to the invention. The platform may be fixed at both ends, and in this way will operate very well. The vibration however is found to be an advantage as it assists in shaking out the grain.
I am aware that a platform or table 'has been previously combined with an endless chain of slats in a manner somewhat similar to mine though for a dissimilar object, as in the case of I. C. Birdsalls clover huller of forth.
