Description

G. W. GRIMES. Hand Corn-Sheller.
No. 213,651. Patented Mar. 25,1879.
WITNESSES INVENTOR' ATTORNEY N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GRIMES, OF BLUFF'ION, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,651, dated March 25, 1879; application filed January 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Ganvrus, of Blufiton, in the county of Wills and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hand Corn-Shellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representa tion of a top view of my improved hand cornsheller, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in hand corn-shellers; and the nature of the invention consists in a ring provided with two or more rows of alternating projecting inwardly-beveled teeth and a handle, whereby the sheller is manipulated, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates my improved corn-sheller, consisting, mainly, of a broad annulus or ring, at, having in its inside two independent rows, 11 c, of teeth d. The teeth d of one row alternate with those of the other, and they all radiate from the said ring toward its center and are beveled inwardly, as shown in the figures. Projecting outwardly from this ring is a strong handle, 6, forming a component part thereof, or secured thereto in any suitable manner.
Usually the ring, with its teeth and handle, is made of cast-iron, in one piece. It is used as follows: The sheller is held in theleft hand, and the ear of corn thrust into the ring with the right and caused to rotate. The teeth coming in contact with difl'erent rows of the grain on the cob speedily separate the former from the latter. Usually the outer edges of the teeth are curved surfaces, the object being to form a flaring central space in the ring, that will admit cobs of any size, and to bring the ends of said teeth in contact with a limited number of grains at a time only.
Instead of holding the sheller in the left hand, it may be held in the right, and the cob, being introduced with the left, maybe stripped of its grains by holding the cob stationary and rotating the sheller.
VVha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hand corn-sheller consisting of an annular metallic rim. to, having a rigid handle, 6, extending from the side of the rim, and internally-projectin g teeth at, alternately arranged toward each margin of said rim and beveled inwardly, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. GRIMES.
