Description

J. H. BROWN. Hog-Ringing Implement.
No. 213,618. Patented Mar. 25.1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE JAMES H. BROWN, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOG- RINGING IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,618, dated March 25, 1879; application filed March 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. BROWN, of Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Ringing Hogs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the jaws of a hog-ringing implement substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to'describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, showing the instrument when ready for operation; and Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the implement in position after operation.
A A represent the handles, pivoted together at a, and forming beyond said pivot'point the jaws B and B, respectively. The jaw B is formed in its under side at the end with acircular recess or socket, b, and the end of said jaw has a slot, as, as shown, for the purpose of admitting the sharpened end of the wire to pass through the eye. The jaw B is made nearly in L shape-that is, the other end projects upward a suitable distance. This jawhas in its inner side a longitudinal groove, b the end or point of said jaw forming a notched guide, 01.
The ring is of a single piece of wire, 0, bent in U shape, and an eye, 0, formed at one end, while the other end, f, is pointed. This is placed in the jaws in such a manner that the eye 6 will be held in the socket b of the jaw while the point f is being forced upward through the snout, and then through the eye 0, the notched guide d at the point of the jaw conducting the point in proper position through the eye.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The jaw B, provided at its outer end with slot as, to admit of the sharpenedend of the wire being forced through the eye, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the jaw B, constructed with slot or opening at or near its outer end, the jaw B, with longitudinal groove b and notched guide d, all as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. BROWN.
