N.PEI'ERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRA wASHmGToN D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI D. ALLEN, OF GRASS LAKE, MICHIGAN.
IM PROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,602, dated March 25, 1879; application filed August 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI D. ALLEN, of Grass Lake, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side of my nut-lock, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for locking nuts on bolts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the nut, and B the bolt. The bolt B is made in the ordinary way. The nut A has upon one side a recess, a, which communicates through a hole, b, into the central perforation of the nut. From the recess, also, extends a hole, d, through the adjoining side of the nut, and at the other end of the recess is formed a pocket or cavity, 6, as shown.
The recess a is to receive a dog, composed of a rod or bar, 0, with a point, t, projecting from its side.
When the nut has been screwed up on the bolt as far as desired, the dog is inserted in the recess so that one end of the bar 0 will proiect through the hole d. The dog is then, with a punch or other instrument, driven in so that the point '6 will engage with the thread of the bolt. The other end of the bar 0 then lies within the recess a, and by turning the nut back the least triflesay, one-sixteenth of an inch, more or less--this end of the bar will enter the pocket e, and thus lock the dog in place.
It will be seen that the nut cannot turn in the direction that would force the end of the bar 0 through hole (1, for the reason that the nut has been turned up against the face of the piece which the bolt traverses, and turning the nut in that direction tightens it. It cannot turn in the opposite direction, because the end of bar 0, having entered the recess 6, effectually locks it.
It will readily be seen that the nut is then looked securely on the bolt, so that neither the nut nor the bolt can turn accidentally without the other turning also.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The nut A, formed with the recess a, holes I) d, and pocket 0, in combination with the dog 0 i, for locking the nut on a bolt, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEVI D. ALLEN.
