UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HOFFMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH REOKENDORFER,
OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,571, dated March 25, 1879; application filed December 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HOFFMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Holders, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that kind of penholder composed of an outer barrel and an inner independent barrel or nib-piece.
Difficulty has been experienced in securing these parts together, particularly in reversible pen-holders, in which all parts which enter or fit in the case or handle require to be smooth and of even size throughout. For this reason riveting will not answer, since this leaves a projection on the exterior of the holder. Other means have been tried, but they either involve too much expense or trouble, or provide a fastening which at best is insecure.
It is my object to provide a perfectly secure fastening which will leave no projection upon the exterior of the pen-holder, and which will at the same time be cheaper and perfectly simple and easy of application.
To this end I form in the outer barrel two cross-slits, and depress into the interior of the barrel the strap formed by the slits, so that it shall in effect constitute a loop. On the rear end of the inner nib-piece I form a tongue, which, when the nibpiece is inserted and pushed back, passes above the loop, but inside the outer barrel. I then, by suitable means, as by a formerintroduced into the penholder, swage up the parts so as to press the loop outwardly again, the effect of the operation being to force that part of the tongue which straddles the loop outwardly, so as to be flush with the exterior of the holder, thus lockin g the nib-piece tightly in place without causing any external inequality or unevenness.
The nature of my invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawin gs, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the nibpiece detached. Fig. 2 is a like view of the outer barrel, the parts in these figures being on an enlarged scale in order-to better exhibit their construction. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section. of the completed holder.
The nib piece A, of otherwise ordinary or suitable construction, is provided with a longitudinal tongue, a, as shown.
At a proper point in the outer barrel, B, a loop, I), is formed by making two transverse slits of suitable length, and then depressing into the interior of the barrel the strap or strip of metal bounded by these slits. When this is done the nib-piece is inserted into the barrel and is pushed into proper place, during which operation the tongue a is caused to pass between the exterior surface .of the. loop and the interior surface of the barrel. By suitable means theloop is now forced outwardly until the part of the tongue which straddles it is brought out flush with the exterior of the barrel B, as shown in Fig. 3. When this is done it will be seen that the tongue is tightly interlocked with the loop, and that the nib-piece and outer barrel are thus securely fastened together. At the same time there is no projection on the barrel, so that it may be used as a reversible pen-holder, either one of the two divisions into which it is separated by the bead 0 being capable of entering the end of the hollow penhandle.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The outer barrel, formed with-a loop, as described, in combination with the inner nibpiece, provided with a tongue which engages and interlocks with said loop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HUFFMAN.
