IMPROVEMENT IN BROILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,532, dated March 25, 1879 application filed December 21, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLEN O. SELLEGK, of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broilers, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a plan, showing a broiler standing on a platform, as hereinafter specified. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at w w of Fig. 1, showing in addition a portion of a stove. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the broiler D; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the cover and platform, the broiler being removed.

My invention relates to covers for broilers.

It consists in providing such cover with devices for holding the same in place on a stove in providing such cover with supports to receive and hold the broiler when in use; in making the cover open at the bottom to allow the broiler to be let down into the stove, in connection with an opening through which the broiler can be inserted and removed, and a platform connected with such cover, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, A represents the top of a stove or range. B is a cover for a gridiron or broiler. As shown, this cover is designed to be large enough to cover the openingin the stove after the center cross piece and two covers have been removed, and it is adapted to be placed on the top of the stove. It is open at the bottom.

a is a hinged door, which can be opened to admit the introduction of the broiler from the front, and can then be closed. As shown, the cover B is triangular in form; but this exact shape is not essential. The door a is hinged to the front upper edge of the body of the cover at b. c is an opening in the lower edge of the door a, for the handle of the broiler when the door is closed. In Fig. l the door is open in Fig. 2 it is closed.

01 represents pieces of metal extending downward a little way from the back side of the cover, to which they are secured, and then carried back, so as to pass under the top of the stove when the cover is in place, forming hooks, which prevent the cover from being tipped up when the broiler is placed on the platform,

as hereinafter set forth, and aiding in keeping the cover in place 6 are hooks or supports, similar to d, except that they are bent forward, and on these the rear of the broiler rests when over the fire. f is a projection extending downward from the lower part of the front of the cover, arranged so as to come in contact with the top of the stove, so as to prevent the cover from being accidentally drawn forward when removing the'broiler or otherwise. This piece f passes into the opening in the top of the stove.

O is a platform, permanently connected with the cover B, and on a line with the lower part thereof, upon which the broiler can be placed when removed from the fire to turn or remove the meat. 70 is a ring. a is a finger-piece on the door.

D is an oval broiler, adapted to be placed in the top of a stove after the two covers and short cross-piece have been removed. The cross-bars are grooved, and a receptacle, 9, is provided for the gravy.

h is the handle of the broiler. It is carried up, so that it can be grasped without tipping up the front of the broiler. As shown, there is an enlargement or projection on the under side of the handle, which rests on the front lower edge of the cover when the broiler is in the stove.

The supports for the broiler are so arranged that when in the stove the front will be a little lower than the rear, so that the gravy will flow into 9.

In use, two covers and the short cross-piece are removed, and the cover placed in position over the opening in the stove. The door a can then be opened, and the broiler, with the meat thereon, can then be placed over the fire and in the stove, as shown in Fig. 2, the rear of the broiler resting on the supports e, and the front on the lower front edge of the cover, by means of the handle or the projection i thereon; then the door can be closed. When desired, the door can be opened, and the broiler can be placed on the platform (J, for the purpose of turning or removing the meat, and any gravy which drops from the meat will be caught by such platform.

During the operation of broiling, the fire will not be materially affected, the door a being closed most of the time, so that the broiling will be rapid, and the heat of the oven will not be much affected. Very little, if any, smoke will enter the room. Even when the door a. is open the draft will ordinarily be sufficient to carry all the smoke into the stove.

1n manufacturing, a wire frame can be made as large as the bottom of the cover and the platform together, to which the platform and cover proper, which may be of sheet iron or tin, can be easily secured in any well-known manner. The construction of the other parts will be sufliciently understood without further description.

My improvement can be readily adapted to be used with a single hole of a stove, and the cover could be used with a broiler, which is designed to rest upon the top of the stove.

The cover constructed as described would be useful withoutthe platform; but the latter is an important feature. The back side of the cover can be so constructed that there will be more space between it and the broiler.

If the platform is not used, a wire or other strengthening-piece should be used at the lower front edge of the cover, and such wire may be used when the platform is attached.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The cover B, having an opening in front, closed by a door, a, and provided with books d and projection f, and adapted to be used with a broiler, substantially as specified.

2. A culinary article consisting of a cover, B, door a, platform 0, books d, projection f, and supports a, and adapted to be used in connection with a broiler, substantially as specified.

3. A culinary article consisting of a cover, B, open at the bottom, so that a broiler can be let down below the top of the stove, and provided with an opening in front, closed. by a door, a, and a platform, 0, connected with such cover, and a supporting-wire, to which the platform and the lower edge of the cover are connected, substantially as specified.
