pipe leading from the opening to a point adja: cent the bottom of the container, a check valve associated with the inner portion of the pipe to preclude flow through the pipe into the interior of the barrel while providing for fiow from the interior of the barrel out through the pipe, means connecting the pipe with the margin of the dispensing opening, and a locking device for securing the pipe against removal, the locking device being of such character that it is releasable only in a predetermined manner and with the aid of special releasing tools or devices.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a highly effective type of locking device which is so compactly and closely organized as to occupy a. minimum space and as to be susceptible of economical production from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available. The locking device in all of its several embodiments positively secures the pipe or conduit against removal by unauthorized persons and yet maybe readily manipulated to release ed out in the appended claims, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which:

Means is provided for locking the connecting sleeve I5 to the valve casing and in this form of the invention comprises locking balls 25 similar to ball bearings and accommodated in transverse openings 26 provided in the reduced lower end I! of the connecting sleeve. The openings 26 are so shaped and dimensioned as to limit the distance at which the balls may be projected outwardly therethrough but they do allow sufiicient projection of the balls to enable them to have locking engagement with the tapered inner surface 2'! of the upper end of the valve casing.
For forcing the balls 25 into locking engagement with the tapered surface 21 of the valve casing an expanding bushing 28 is provided. The
' upper portion of the outer periphery of this bushing '28 is threadedly interconnected with the sleeve l5 as indicated at 29. Below thisthreaded portion 29 .the exterior or outer periphery of the bushing 28 is smoothed but is provided with an inclined surface 30 which, as the bushing is threaded down into the sleeve, acts on the balls 25 to force them out to the position shown in Figure 1. In this position axial movement of the pipe I and its connecting sleeve 15 relative to the valve casing I8 is positively limited. Hence, the ring 8 may not be unthreaded from the bushing 4 and the pipe 1 may not be removed. The upper end of the bushing 28 is provided with slots 3| designed to coact with a special tool in order to provide for the manipulation or turning of the bushing in either direction by authorized persons.
Sucha tool is shown in Figures 3 and 4 and consists of an elongated shank 35 provided with a cross handle 36 at its upper end and with laterally extending keys 3'! adjacent its lower end designed to interfit with the slots 3 i. Of course, it is to be understood that these keys 3'! and the slots 3| may be of any special shape or configuration.
In this embodiment of the invention when the barrel is full of oil-the cap Il may be removed and any appropriate type of pump maybe conneoted up with the bushing 3 and conduit 1 to dispense the oil from the barrel. However, any
down-flow of oil through the pipe 1 back into the barrel is prevented by the check valve 23. Access to this check valve or removal of the pipe 1 1s efiectively precluded except by persons having knowledge of the special way in which the device is constructed and equipped with the tool such as the tool shown in Figures 3 and 4. By
inserting the tool down through the conduit 1 and engaging its keys 3! with the slots 3|, the ex- Stoppins 24 limit the movement of the valve 23 away panding bushing 28 may be backed up sufliciently to allow the balls 25 to move back against the reduced lower end 28 of the bushing. When the expanding bushing 28 is backed up so that the reduced portion 28' is in alinement with the balls then there is no resistance holding the balls in position and backing out the connecting ring 8 permits the balls to move axially inwardly by reason of the increasing pressure exerted by the inclined surfaces 21 of valve body I3. With the balls in their released position, that is, out of engagement with the inwardly sloping surface 2! of the valve casing, a wrench may be applied to the ring 8 to remove the ring together with the conduit 1, connecting sleeve I5 and the locking device. The barrel may then be conveniently refilled.
The form of the invention shown in Figures 5 to 8, inclusive, is identical with that above de scribed except that a differently constructed locking'arrangement is provided. As in the other embodiment of the invention the-conduit 1, which is connected at its upper end to the barrel ,as
before is welded as at [6 to a connecting sleeve designated at 40. The connecting sleeve has a reduced lower portion 4| fitted in the upper end of the valve casing l8. Transverse openings 26 are provided in this reduced portion of the connecting sleeve to accommodate locking balls 25 as before. However, these lockingballs 25instead of coacting with an inwardly sloping, orineluded surface on the valve casing are adapted to be seated in vertical grooves 42 provided on the inside of thevalve casing, and when so seated prevent turning of the connecting sleeve 40 and consequently the conduit 1. Moreover, in this form of the invention a different type of structure is provided for moving the balls .to locking positionrand providing for their return to released position. I
A flanged and apertured supporting plate 43 is secured in the lower end of the connecting sleeve by means of set screws 44. An oscillating cam 45 is supported on this plate 43 and is con fined to its oscillating movement by the plate and I by means of an internal shoulder 46 formed on the connecting sleeve. This cam is also apertured so that the liquid can freely flow through the cam and the mounting plate. The cam has curved or inclined surfaces 41 designed to wipe against the balls 25 and force these balls out wardly until they ride on the high points 49 of the cam, in which position the balls will be projected into the grooves 42 and the parts locked into position. Transverse slots 50 are provided in the upper surface of the cam so that a tool such as shown in Figure 3 may be employed to rotate the cam. In order to releasably secure the cam in position to maintain the balls projected into locking position or inposition where the balls are permitted to fall back to released position by gravity a ball projected detent 5i is provided in the mounting plate 43 and is engageable with recesses 52 and 53 provided on the 'undersuriace of the cam 45. The extenttowhich the cam i'nay be oscillated in either directioniis positively limited by means of a stop pin 54 fixed tothe'ca m a nd projecting down into an arcuate groove 55"pro' vided in the mounting plate.
In Figure 9 there is illustrated still another type of locking device which may be employed for securing the connecting sleeve at the lower end of the pipe I and consequently also the pipe 1 against rotation. In Figure 9 the connecting sleeve is designated at 56 and is provided in its "of the subjoined claims.
by means of a spring63, the spring being interposed between the inturned annular flangetll provided at the outer end of the-bolt'housing and a shoulder presented by; the guide portion 65 of the bolt. The extent to which the bolt is projected inwardly by the spring is limited bythe engagement-"of an integral head or collar 62 provided on the bolt with the inturned flange. The lower end of the connecting sleeve is beveled as at 61 so that when the sleeveis introduced into the valve casing this beveled end 61 will cooperate with the beveled'edge 68 of the bolt to push the bolt back until one of the openings 58 comes into alinement therewith-whereupon the'spring 63 will thrust the inner end --of 'the bolt into the alined opening 58 and the deducing a special tool down through the pipe i and operating it to thrust the bolt 'outwardly out of theopening 58 in which it is engaged, thereupon the pipe I may be removed; as in the other embodiments of the invention. The special tool may be identical with-that shown and'describedin the Brushe application above referred to and its parts are shown in dotted lines'' in Figure 9 and designated at-22 f23' and 25% -While we have shown and described *sev'eral constructions in which the invention may be; advantageously embodied, it is'to be understood that these constructions havebeen'selected merely for the purposeof illustration or example, and that various changes in the size,- shapeand arrangement of the'parts may-bema'dewithout departing from the-spirit of the invention or the scope The invention claimed is:
1. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents maybe dispenseda conduit'in said container, means for releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the'openi'ng, a valve casing within and secured to the container,
'a'valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the container out through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfitted with the valve casing, anda' locking element for'securing said connecting sleeve tg said valve casing, means constraining the locking element to move transversely with respect toth'e locking sleeve iromlocked to released position and vice versa; in combination with a special tool insertible through the pipe for manipulating said transversely shifting locking element.
2. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said container, means for releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to the container, a valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the container out through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfitted with the valve casing, locking balls carried by the portion of the-sleeve interfitted with,
the valve casing, said valve casing being" cooperoutwardly into' locking DOsition. 1 a 1. y
3. Anon-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said container, means for releasably connecting one" end ofthe conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to the container, a valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for how ofthe contents of thecontainer out through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfitted with the valve casing, locking balls carriedby the portion of the sleeve interfitted withthe valve casing, said valve casing having an inwardly sloping surface with which said balls are adapted to have interlocking engagement when projected, and means 'for-i projecting the balls.
4. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said container, means for releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to. the container, a valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the container out through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfitted with the valve casing, locking balls carriedby the portion of the sleeve interfitted with the valve casing, said valve casing having means thereon with which said balls are engageable when projected to lock the sleeve and valve casing against disassembly, cam means for projecting said balls and including an apertured mounting plate secured to the sleeve, an apertured cam supported for oscillation on the mounting plate and having camming surfaces engageable with the balls, and cooperating means between the mounting plate and cam plate for releasably securing the cam plate in either looking or released position. v
9. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit releasably interconnected with the margin of the opening and extending into the barrel, a check valve for preventing flow of liquid through the conduit-into the barrelbut allowing flow of liquid from the barrel through the conduit to the exterior, and a locking device within the barrel for preventing removal of the conduit and comprising a member .valve casing having means thereon with which saidballs are engageable when projected to lock the sleeve and valve casing against disassembly,
fixed in position within the barrel and a; locking element cooperable with said member and with the conduit, said member and said conduit having means supporting said locking element for transverse shifting movement with respect there'- to from locking to release position and vice versa in combination with a special tool adapted to be applied to said locking element to shift the same to released position.
10. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said container, means for releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to the container, a valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the containerout through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfltted with the valve casing, said sleeve having a bolt hole, and a transversely shiftable bolt mount ed on the valve casing and engageable with the bolt hole to secure the pipe against removal.
11. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said container, means for releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to the container, a valve in said valve casing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the container out through the valve casing, a connecting sleeve secured to the lower end of the conduit and interfitted with the valve casing, said sleeve having a bolt hole, a bolt mounted on the valve casing and engageable with the bolt hole, and a spring for urging the bolt into 1 engagement with the bolt hole, in combination with a special tool insertible through the conduit for releasing the bolt.
12. A non-refillable barrel comprising a container having an opening through which its contents may be dispensed, a conduit in said con- .tainer, means for-releasably connecting one end of the conduit to the margin of the opening, a valve casing within and secured to the container, a valve in saidcasing for preventing flow therethrough into the container while providing for flow of the contents of the container out through the valve casing, a locking device between the inner end of the conduit and the valve casing releasable in a predetermined manner and by means of special tools introduced through the conduit, means supporting said locking device or said conduit in its released position, said locking device when released being removable with the conduit and its connecting means leaving only the valve casing and its valve in the container.
