This invention relates to skylights and is concerned particularly with a movementwhich is included in the construction of the skylight for the purpose of Vcontrolling openingA and closing 5 of the Ventilating shutter of the skylight.
At the present time it is common practice in the art of skylights to mountaA skylight frame that includesa Ventilating shutter over an opening in a building structure to which the skylight is to be applied. Prior to the present inventionit has been the practice to mount the movement for controlling operation of the shutter vin the buil-ding structure defining the opening. As a result of this arrangement, inconvenience is experil5 enced in obtaining a pro-per coordination between the skylight movement and the Ventilating shutter and particularly in the installation of theA skylight as an entirety. v
With the foregoing conditions in mind, this invention has in View as its primal objective the provision of a skylight comprisinga frame in cluding a `Ventilating shutter, and which frame has mounted thereon a movement for controlling operation of the shutter. With this assembly the skylight in its entirety may be readily vinstalled over any suitable opening with ease and facility.
Another somewhat more detailed objective of this invention is the provision of a skylight including a skylight movement of a simplified and improved character. In accordance with this invention, the movement which is mounted on the skylight frame includes apulley carrying an endless chain as an operating member therefor.
A crank arm is carried by the pulley and connected by a. link with the Ventilating shutter. In one dead center position of the crank arm and link the shutter is in a fully closed position, while in the opposite dead VCenterr position the shutter is fully extended.
Various othermore detailed objectives and advantages will in part become apparent and in part be hereinafter stated,v as the description of the invention proceeds.
The invention, therefore, comprises a skylight, comprising a frame adapted to'be'mounted over an opening in the building structure, and which frame includes a Ventilating shutter. Carried by the frame itself is an improved movement for 50- controlling opening and closing of the shutter.

Each of the side pieces I0 and lIl is formed at the bottom with a straight edge which is deriined by an offset structure designated I4. This structure I4 being preferably integral with the 35 end piece.
At one side each of the end pieces IIJ and II has a short side edge I5 connecting the inclined edges I2 with the straight edges I4, while these edges I2 and I4 are connected at the more widely 40 spaced extremities by an upright edge IE and an inclined edge I1.
The short side edges I5 of the end pieces I and vIl are connected together by a wall structure I8, while another wall structure designated 45* I9 connects the inclined edges I1.
Secured on the inner side of each of the upright edges I6 and ,fthe side pieces I0 and Il is ay channel structure designated 2B, and'these channel structures 20 together with the struc- 50 ture I9 and a bottoni offset structure 2l, that corresponds to the structure I4, dene an opening in which is pivotally mounted a Ventilating shutter, designated 22. l l
This ventllating shutter 22 is pivotally mount 551" ed as indicated at 23 to the channel structures 20 and at each side the shutter 22 is formed with a flange 24 that is spaced from the side edges of the Ventilating structure, as by the ange 25. This spaced flange 24 may be integral with the side ange 25 and connected thereto by a portion designated 26. When the shutter 22 is in a closed position, the spaced anges 24 at each side of the shutter are received in the channels of the channel structures 20. VV
The offset construction of the members I4 and 2| is carried out at the narrow side of the skylight as indicated at 21, and this structure is designed to fit over the frame of a building structure which defines an opening, this practice being conventional in the building arts.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention,
the shutter 22 is shown as being made from a lat piece of sheet metal. Obviously, however, the invention contemplates similar constructions in which the shutter is made of glass or other transparent material.
Referring now more particularly to the movement which controls opening and closing operations of the shutte-r 22, a bracket as shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4 is designated 28. This bracket 28 is formed with diverging legs that terminate in feet 29 that are anchored to the channel member 20 that is adjacent to the side piece Il. Any suitable means may be availed-of to supply the anchorage, such as the bolt and nut arrangements illustrated at 30.
The legs of the bracket 28 come together and dene a recess 3|, through which passes a bearing pin 32. This bearing pin 32 passes through an opening in the end piece H and is headed as shown at 33. Carried by the bearing pin 32 is a pulley 34 that is retained in position on the bearing pin 32 by a cotter pin 35.
Extending diametrically across the pulley 34 is an arm 36 which preferably takes the form of the angle iron illustrated in the drawings. yThis arm may be aixed to the pulley 34 in any preferred manner as by the rivets shown at 3T.
It is notable that at one end the arm 36 terminates at the periphery of the pulley 34, While at the other end the arm 36 projects beyond the periphery of the pulley 34 as shown at 38. This extension 38 is formed with an opening 39.
A bracket member 40 is anchored to the shutter 22 by a bolt and nut fastening assembly designated 4| and this bracket 4D is formed with a pair of spaced ears 42. A link member designated 43 has one end received between the ears 42 and is secured theretoby a pin 44 that is headed at one end and riveted at the other as illustrated in the drawings.
The link 43 is formed with the offset portion 35 that is connected thereto by the portion designated 46 and the extremity of the offset portion 45 is formed with an opening '41. This opening 41 in the link structure is in alignment with the opening 39 in the extension of the arm 35, and extending between the aligned openings is a connecting pin designated 4S, as shown in Figure 2.
The pulley 34 is formed with the usual channel or groove 49 and received in this channel or groove is an endless chain designated 50. This chain 50 extends downwardly to a conveniently accessible position and may be availed of Vas an operating member for rotating the pulley 34 to open or close the shutter 22 as occasion demands.
When theshutter 22 is in the closed position illustrated in full lines by Figure 2, the oifsetl portion 45 of the link 43 will engage against the Side flange of the angle iron, constituting the arm 36. It is obvious that further rotative movement of the pulley 34 in a counter-clockwise direction (speaking with reference to the showing at Figure 2) is prevented. However, when the pulley 34 is rotated in a clockwise direction, the arm 36 will be swung up and over into the dotted line position, forcing the link structure 43-45 upwardly to cause the shutter 22 to assume the dotted line position as illustrated in Figure 2.
Thus, it is evident that when the arm 36 is in one dead center position. with respect to the link structure 43-45, the shutter 22 is in a fully closed position, Whereas in the diametrically opposite dead center position of arm 36 and link structure 43-45, the shutter 22 will be in its maximum open position.
While a preferred specific embodiment of the invention is hereinbefore set forth it is to be clearly un-derstood that I am not to be limited to the exact construction illustrated and described, because various modications of these details may be provided in putting the invention into practice within the purview of the appended claims.V Y n I claim: Y i,

A skylight structure of the character described, eomprising a frame adapted to be mounted over an opening in a building structure, said framerincluding spaced end pieces, said frame also having a Ventilating opening intermediate the end pieces, a shutter pivotally mounted in said opening, and al movement carried by one of the end pieces and operatively connected to the shutter for controlling opening and closing movement of the latter.
2. A skylight structure of the character described, comprising a frame including a rectangular bottom structure adapted to be positioned-over a correspondingly shaped opening in a building structure, an end piece at each end of the bottom structure upstanding therefrom, each of Ysaid end pieces having an upright edge and an inclined edge, a connecting structure between the end pieces at the upper extremities of the inclined edges, said last mentioned connecting structure, bottom structure, and side pieces defining. an opening, arventilating shutter pivotally mountedin said opening, a skylight movement operatively mounted on'one of the end pieces, and linkage connecting the movement Vwith the shutter whereby'operation lof the movement causes operation of the shutter.
3.V A skylight structure of the character described, comprising a frame including a rectangular bottom structure adapted to be positioned over a correspondingly shaped opening in a building structure, an end piece at each end of the bottom structure upstanding therefrom, each of said end pieces having an upright edge and an inclined edge, a connecting structure between the end pieces at the upper extremities of the inclined edges, a channel structure extending along the uprightedge of each of the end pieces, said channel structures' together with the bottom structure and upper connecting structure defining an opening, a Ventilating shutter in said opening having oifset flanges which are received in the channel structures when the shutter is in a closed position, a movement carried by one of the end pieces, means for operatively connecting the movement with the shutter and an operating member for said movement,
