PATENT OFFICE 2,131,491 j s'rUB AXLE MINE CAR Warren V.
`Johnson-and Robert Bloomsburg, Pa.,V assignors to and.Foundry Compa C; Kepner, American Car ny, New York, -N. Y., a
This invention deals with mine 'cars in general and in particular with mine cars ofthe stubaxle type for rotary dumping.
of this invention to provide a wall and outer axle bearing member connected by a strong box-section.
A still further object of the inventionfis the provision of a stub-axle mine car having the inner bearing members connected by a tubular bracing member.
These and other objects of the invention will lbe apparent to one skilled in the art from a study ci the following drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of substantially onehalf of the car, parts being broken away to more hood;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the other half of the car with the bumper being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the car, portions thereof being omitted;
Fig. 4 is an end view of slightly more than half of the car, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings invr detail, the car is shown as of the rotary dump type with fixed ends but it is obvious that it is equally Well adapted for end dumping by the mere provision of an end doorlandpossibly braces atthe open end. The inner or side sills are of angle form having a vertical web 2 projecting into-the lading Zone and an inturned bottom flange 4. The ends of the sills overlap and are'connected to the sides 6 of the cast end members which are substantially of channel form bracedxby the inclined portions 8. One end memberis provided with a combined spring buffer and draft gear A, while the other member is provided with arigid draw element B and wood cushioned bumper cap C.
Each end member is provided with projecting anges l0 to which is riveted the end Wall l2 having its ends extending inwardly atan angle for connection to the plate girder side walls I4.
wardly directed flange I 8 of a bottom chord of angular formation. As shown more clearly in Fig. 5, the bottom chord of the plate girder is section, though this, obviously, is merely by way of example. The inturned lower ange 20 of the chord forms a supbeing disposed mwardly from the plane of the side wall insures complete clearing of the car when turned upside down in the dumper. The upper end portions of the side walls have 35 one piece but in any case will be attached to, and
supported by, the Various iianges referred toA previously.
The wheel hoods and cross support members are shown as pressed in one piece with side iianges 4S, upstanding walls 48, top Wall or cover portion 5D which connects the side walls, and
K wall 52, dome-shaped hood portion 54, and outer 55 The inner upstanding central portion 64 2 hood and cross support members preferably have the bearing brackets connected thereto and properly aligned prior to attachment to the car and their attachment to the car is accomplished by securing the flanges 46 to the car floor, the end wall and inner bearing bracket to the sill flanges, the outer end an-ges to the girder side walls and the outer bearing bracket flange to the floor sheet. It will be seen that the combined hood and support member, together with the girder walls and floor sheet, forms a full box section o1 great strength extending between the outer bearing member and side wall. The load on the car floor will be transmitted to the axles and wheels by the inner sills and by the box section Ysupport members, which latter receive the load from the girder side walls.
The various parts and construction of the car have been described in detail but it is obvious that changes may be made such as forming the support member as a pan-shaped pressing to which would be welded the dome-shaped wheel hood proper, or the pressing could be made in two parts welded together and these changes as well as others are contemplated which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. In a mine or similar car, girder side walls, sill members, combined wheel hood and support means connecting said sill members and girder side walls, a floor supported by said means and by said side walls and sill members, inner bearing brackets secured to said sill members, outer bearing brackets secured to said support means in spaced relation to said sills and side walls, said support means being substantially of closed box-section between said outer bracket and side wall.
