This invention relates to driving means for the turntable of plate or disc recording and/or reproducing devices.
One object of the invention resides in the provision of new and improved means of the char-.

lected for illustration in the accompanying drawings. It will be understood however that many changes in form, construction and arrangement, may be made by those' skilled in the art, without departingirom the scope and spirit of the inven tion as expressed in the appended claims.

The depending flange 3 of the turntable joumaled on a vertical axis A is shown in vertical elevation in Fig. 3 and in plane cross-sectional views in each of Figs. 1, 2 and 4. It will be understood that the disc-supporting surface of the turntable is coincident with the plane defined by the upper edge of the flange 3, as shown in Fig. 3.
To the frame 4, shown in Fig. '3, of the motor, not shown, a plate 5 is secured forming the carrier for the entire switching arrangement. This base plate 5 carries a set screw I on which another plate 6 is guided by means of the slot 8. The plate 6 further possesses a lengthening piece 9 which at its front end carries a roll I0 and is also embraced by a bow II disposed on the plate 5. The plate 5 has also a projection I2 similar to the projection I3 arranged on the opposite end of the plate 6. Between the two projections I2, I3 a tension spring is fixed which has the tendency to draw the displaceable plate 6 into its highest end position.
The plate 6 constitutes the engageable and disengageable carrier for the transmission gears and for this purpose is provided with a bearing bolt I5 which, directly above the plate 6, supports a friction disc I6 connected with a superposed friction disc I! of smaller diameter. Above the friction disc I'l the journal or bolt I5 carries an e1- bow lever I8 provided at its angular end with a journal or bearing pin I9 for a third-friction disc 20 ofmedium diameter and articulated at its free end to a control lever 23 by means of the hinge pin 2| and the drawbar 22. The control lever 23 is arranged on a pivot 24 which is disposed outside the range of the turntable in the frame of the device. In Fig. 1 one end position of the control lever 23 is shown at which the friction disc 20 engages directly between the friction disc 2 arranged on the motor shaft I and the driving edge 3 of the turntable. As indicated in the drawings, at this position, the other friction discs I6, I! will not contact with the driving edge 3 or the friction disc 2 on the motor shaft I. In Fig. 2, the other end position of the control lever 23 is shown, at which the friction disc 20 arranged on the bell crank I8 is indicated only by dots and dashes to improve the view. At this position of the parts, the plate 6 has been farther drawn up by the spring I I. The bell crank I8 has been swung about the pin I5 to render motion of the carrier 6 impossible. The parts are then in the position at which the largest friction disc I6 engages the driving wheel 2 whereas the friction disc I! firmly connected with the friction disc I6 hugsthe edge 3 of the turntable. Transmission is effected from the motor shaft to the driving edge 3 of the turntable by means of the wheels 2, I6, I1.
At the position of parts according to Fig. 1 the turntable will have a speed of approximately 78 revolutions, which corresponds to gramophone speed, so that discs on which sound has been recorded at this speed by a suitable device can be instantly reproduced by a gramophone.
At the position of parts according to Fig. 2 the turntable has a slower speed amounting approximately to only 33 revolutions and being suited only for dictating machines for taking as much dictation as possible on each plate. slight regu- 2 formed as a cone.

The control lever 26 is pwitioned with its front end in a guide 21 which flxes the end positions of the control lever 26. On another pin 28 arranged in the machine frame an adjusting lever 29 is provided which with its front sloping end is placed on the guide roll l disposed on the plate 6. The lever 29 is articulated to the control lever 26 by means of a drawbar 30. The control lever 28 projects from the casing of the device and can be brought transmission of motion from the driving motor to theturntable is possible. On the other hand, if the control lever 28' is brought into the position according to Fig. 4, the adjusting lever 29 will be moved so as to press with its front end upon the guide roll l0 and thus push the carrier G for the friction wheels i6, i1, 20 into lowermost position to bring it out of engagement with the turntable as well as with the friction cone 2 on the motor shaft i. Transmission of motion is thereby interrupted and the turntable stopped. It is immaterial whether the control lever 23 is in the position according to Fig. 1 or 2, that is, whether the one group of friction wheels is in operative position or the other friction disc. Starting and stopping by means of the lever 26 is possible without any trouble, as all the control parts are articulated to one another and capable of cooperating in any motion.-
The invention is not'limited to the embodiment shown, but may be carried out in other ways. For example, the displaceable carrier could carry several sets of friction wheels which alternatively become operative, so that the tumtable can rotate at more than two speeds.
I claim:
1. A drive-for a recording and reproducinggdevice for plates or discs, comprising a casing, a turntable in said casing, a driving edge on the circumference of theturntable, a driving motor in said casing, a movable carrier displaceably disposed on said casing, a bearing pin on said carrier, a lever pivoted on said bearing pin, a pair of friction wheels journaled on said bearing pin and a friction wheel journaled on said movable lever, said carrier being movable into andout of -position-"to establish a driving connection from said motor through said pair of wheels to the driving edge of said turntable, said lever being effective to move the wheel thereon into and out of position to establish a driving connection from said motor to the said edge of the turntable.
2. In a drive of the character described, the
combination of a prime mover, a rotatably sup-" with, and arranged to be rotated by, said first mentioned wheel and to drivingly engage the flange on said disc, a friction wheel journaled on said lever eccentrically of the lever. axis and adapted to simultaneously engage both the prime mover and disc flange in one position of said lever, means to actuate said lever, and means to actuate said carrier.
3. In a drive of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a, rotatably supported disc, a carrier member slidably mounted in underlying relation with respect to said disc and in close proximity thereto, a plurality of friction wheels journaled on a. fixed axis on said member for joint rotation in planes parallel to the plane of said disc and intermediate the disc and carrier member, a lever pivoted on said friction wheel axis, a friction wheel journaled on said lever for rotation in a plane parallel to the plane of said disc, at depending flange on said disc, means to move said carrier member into and out of position to cause said plurality of wheels to provide a driving engagement between said prime mover and the flange on said disc, and means-to move said lever to cause the wheel thereon to form a driving engagement between a said prime mover and said flange when said carrier is out of position with respect to said plurality of wheels.
4. In a drive of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a rotatably supported disc, a carrier member slidably mounted with respect to said disc and in close proximity thereto, a plurality of friction wheels journaled on a. fixed axis on said member for joint rotation in planes parallel to the plane of said disc, a lever pivoted on said carrier, a friction wheel journaled on said lever for rotation in a plane parallel to the plane of said disc, 2. flange on said disc, means to move said carrier member into and out of position to cause said plurality of wheels to provide a. driving engagement between said prime mover and the flange on said disc, and means to move said lever to cause the wheel thereon to form a driving engagement between said prime mover and said flange in one position of said carrier.
5. In a drive of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, rotatably supported disc, a flange on said disc, 2. carrier member slidably mounted with respect to said disc and in close proximity thereto, a plurality of friction wheelsjoumalled on a fixed axis on said member for joint rotation in planes parallel to the plane of said disc, yieldable means tending to slide said carrier member in a direction to provide a driving connection between said plurality of wheels, said prime mover. and the flange on said disc, a lever pivoted on said carrier, a friction wheel journalled on said lever for rotation in a plane parallel to the plane of said disc, means to move said carrler'in a direction reverse to that in which the carrier is moved by said yieldable' means to disengage the driving connection between said prime mover and said disc and means to rotate said lever to form a driving connection between said prime mover, the wheels on said lever and said disc. 6. In a drive of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a. rotatably supported disc, a carrier member slidable between two positions, a plurality of friction wheels journailed on a. fixed axis on said member for joint rotation in planes parallel to the plane of said disc, a flange on said disc, a lever pivoted on said 76 carrier, a friction wheel iournalled on said lever for rotation in a. plane parallel tovthe plane of said disc, means tending to move said carrier into one or its said positions to cause said plurality of wheels to provide a driving engagement between said prime mover and theilange on said disc, manual means to move said carrier to thesecond of the said positions to disable the driving connection between said prime mover. said plurality oi wheels and said disc, and means to actuate said lever to cause the wheel thereon-to form a driving engagement between said prime mover and said flange when said carrier occupies a position identified with the disabled condition of said plurality of wheels.
7. In a drive of the character described, the combination of a prime mover, a rotatably supported disc, a carrier member slidably supported with respect to said disc in close proximity thereto, said carrier member being movable between two spaced positions, yieldable means tending to move said carrier to one of said positions, a plurality of friction wheels journalled on said memher and operable in the position to which said yieldable means tends to move said member to provide a driving connection between said prime mover and said disc, a friction wheel movably supported on said carrier member for rotation on an axis extending parallel to the rotary axes of said plurality of friction wheels, means to move said carrier to the second of its positons in which said plurality of wheels are disabled from driving connection between said prime mover and said disc, and means to move said last mentioned friction wheel bodily when said carrier occupies said last mentioned position to provide a driving connection between said prime mover, said last mentioned friction wheel and said disc.
