Description
TWISTER SPOOL Filed June 21, 1937 Patented Sept. 13, 1938 UNITED STAEE PATENT QFFHQE TWISTER SPOOL This invention relates to improvements in textile spools and. bobbins, with reference more particularly to twister spools and twister head attachments.
A primary object is to provide an improved twister spool, or twister spool head-having a certain desirable resiliency and work adaptability, combined with unusual strength and durableness.
Another important object is to provide such a spool, or head, of inexpensive make, or which can be produced at a. saving of cost, as by the utilization of material that would otherwise be waste and useless.
Lightness in weight, security in assembly and long wear properties associated with an established non-breakable characteristic are further desiderata had in view.
The invention and its special advantages will be best understood from further description. with reference to the attached drawing, illustrating one practicable embodiment thereof in the preferred form of an ordinary warping type of spool.
In said drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the spool;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, partly sectional view of one end thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of said end or twister head part of the spool;
Fig. 4 is a plan View of one of the twister head parts; and
Fig. 5 is a side or edge View of the latter.
In the illustrative construction, the spool barrel 6 comprises a cylinder body composed of wood. Ordinarily, and in the present instance, the body is hollowed by a central longitudinal bore, not shown, and is internally shouldered by counterbores, also not shown, at the ends, as is common to constructions of the kind. This bore and counterboring, in addition to forming the internal shouldering, is intended to provide for engagement of the barrel over the shaft or shank of a twister spindle. The hollowing thereby is gauged so as to render said body as light as possible and still leave a wall, or walls, of a thickness great enough to give it adequate assembly and wearing strength.
On the ends of this barrel the spool heads in this instance comprise disc plates 1 composed of hard vulcanized fibre. These heads are cut or stamped out of sheets of the material, and are trimmed or lathed down, and polished to have entirely smooth face and edge surfaces, with the edges preferably rounded. The character of said material, as demonstrated by previous extensive use and test, is such that the heads will not Johnson City, N. Y.

splinter, split or crack and cannot be broken easily, and yet have a certain resiliency, especially after aflixture to the barrel, which is observed particularly by their tendency to rebound when dropped cantwise upon a hard surface. Consequently, they are highly wear resistant and render the spool substantially unbreakable, even when dropped or struck with considerably hard blows.
Said heads are secured to the barrel ends in this instance by hard wooden fastening plugs 8 extending therethrough into and lodged within the aforementioned counterbore recesses of the barrel, with a compressed or Wedge-squeeze action clamping them against said ends. These plugs are formed with head portions, not visible, received within center openings (not referenced) inv the heads, and reduced shank portions, also not visible, received within said counterbores of the barrel against the inner shouldering of the latter, so as to draw and hold the heads tight to the barrel by pressure insertion into place. Glue applied to the shanks of the plugs retains them firmly in place. These plugs have a longitudinal bore or opening 9 coaxial with the bore of the barrel and their outer ends are trimmed or dressed down flush with the outer face surfaces of the heads.
In this instance, the plug fastening is aug mented by a metal locking ring or ferrule ill fitted as a liner around the head portion of each plug, which serves to intensify the squeeze or bind and to pinion the plug in place with a greatly strengthened and rigidified fastening. Said ring has an upper flange, alone appearing in the drawing, overextending a lipped portion of the head around its central opening and a lower flange, not visible, underengaging the head portion of the plug against the aforenamed shouldering of the barrel, while its body is ribbed or provided with teeth (not shown), circumferentially, which engage into the parts between which the ring is pressed so as to be locked therewith in a positive hold. A specific illustration of this described augmental fastening will be found in my prior Patent No.. 1,987,991 dated January 15, 1935 for an Improved spool or bobbin. It will be noted that the fastening plug and locking ring at the end of the spool are both turned or worked down absolutely flush with the outer surface of the head so that the latter will be entirely fiat all the way across.
On the outer face of the head at one end of the spool a pair of segmental plate members ll consummate the twister spool formation. These plates members are substantially semicircular or crescentic in shape and are oppositely formed, or correspondingly formed and oppositely disposed to each other. Each has a recess H in its inward or chordal edge, arcuated in conformity with the bore or opening (9) of the fastener plug. They are placed, in circular relation, on opposite sides of said bore or opening with their said recesses in register with the same, and with a gap or spacing I2 therebetw-een providing a slot into which the driving lug (not shown) of a twister spindle may fit. When applied to a spindle, thus engaging its lug, the spool of course rests directly upon the latter which bears against the fiat head surface. Said plate members are composed of the same material as the spool heads and are advantageously cut or stamped out of remnant or waste pieces of the sheets from which said heads are cut. They are applied to the heads in this instance by rivets i3 extending through both the members and said heads, holding them securely in place.
The described plate members thus combined with the regular spool head provide an improved twister head, or twister head attachment. Not only do they give the head the necessary thickness or height to fit operatively upon the spindle, but, being composite with the regular head, they contribute and afford a greater resiliency in action upon the spindle. This greatly reduces and substantially eliminates the factors of breakage and Wear. The resiliency is also increased by the fact that the attachment is in two pieces, other than a single piece which adds rigidity to any ordinary head. Moreover, this two -piece attachment provides an open-ended slot, adapting the spool to application or engagement upon a twister spindle with any length, or width, of driving lug. The open ends of the slot allow lint from the yarn to be thrown out by centrifugal force so as to keep it clean, instead of collecting therein with the formation of slugs that may drop or catch and cause defects in the yarn. The dual plate members can be applied more accurately and accommodatingly than a single plate, and are somewhat lighter in weight so as to require less driving power for the spool. Finally, these slot forming members are the only wearing parts of the spool and can be replaced, when suificiently worn, at less cost than a full circular or closedend plate.
In addition to the foregoing, the described improvement is very simple and has the economic advantage that it can be produced at a materially less cost in manufacture than the ordinary or generally employed device of the kind. The possible utilization of remnant or otherwise Waste material allows a considerable saving, especially in quantity production.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A twister spool, comprising a barrel having a longitudinal bore, a laterally extending disc head of hard-fibre material secured on the end of the barrel and having an opening therethrough to said bore, and a pair of segmental plate members on the outer face of the head oppositely disposed on opposite sides of the bore opening therethrough, said plate members being of the same material as the head and having a form and spacing th-erebetween providing an open-ended slot diametrically across the head without closing or constricting the said bore opening.
2. A twister spool, comprising a barrel of a fibre material having a longitudinal bore, disclike heads of a different and hard vulcanized fibre material fastened on the ends of the barrel and means fastening said heads to the barrel with central openings therethrough to said bore, combined with a pair of segmental plate members fixed on the outer face of one of the heads upon opposite sides of the opening therethrough to the bore, said plate members being of the same material as the heads and having a form and spacing between each other providing an opencnded twister slot diametrically across the head adapting the spool to be engaged upon a twister spindle with its said head resting upon the driving lug of the latter and with said lug fitting into said slot of the former and the centering shaft of the spindle extending into the bore opening of the barrel.
