"2s- 15) This invention relates `to a hand weaving frame, particularly designed for the looping of pile forming material with a pair of adjacent strands of twine or the like to produce strip material for the 5 formation of rugs or similar articles.
For many years there has been practiced the formation of material in strip form for the production of rugs or the like by interlooping with a pair of strands of material such as cotton twine or the like small lengths of yarn, ribbons, rags or the like. Inorder to do this conveniently there have been used supports, generally of wood, provided at one end with xedly mounted stationary twine supports,l and at the other end with a strand 'V15 supporting means in the form of an upwardly extending pin bifurcated at its upper end to receive and pinch and thereby hold the strand as it is nished. It is the general object of the present invention to improve on this type of frame, which had a three-dimensional character and hence took up considerable space in storage and transportation, by providing a foldable frame formed primarily of bent pieces of wire which in folded condition is substantially ilat, but which when expanded provides amply rigid parts to properly tension and support the strands which are being handled.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a frame of this general type which is of simple and inexpensive construction.
Other objects of the invention, particularly relating to details, will become apparent from the following description read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which the figure l represents in perspective the improved device in th'e expanded form in which it is used.
The improved device comprises basically a supporting trapezoid o! wire having converging straight portions 2 joined at their inner ends by a transverse portion l and at their more distant ends by a transverse portion 6.4 A plate 8 has its ends inturned over the portions 2 of the wire, thus forming a relatively rigid flat base .on which the holding means are mounted;`
At the narrow end of the base there `is provided a pivotally mounted wire holding device, in-
dicated at I0. provided with a loop l2 between upwardly extending portions i4, which are adapted to normally. engage each other so as to exert a clamping action on material located between them. The loop l2 relieving the bend contributes to securing a good clamping action. From the clamping portions I4 the wire extends downwardly on both sides and is looped as indicated at it about the portion 4 of the base frame and then in reverse direction downwardly to form stop ends i8. It will beobvious from thedrawing that movement of the holding device I0 is limited in a clockwise direction to a position at substantially right angles to the plate 8, while, however, it may be rotated about the wire portion li through about 270 to latwise engagement with the bottom of. the plate 8. 'Ihis last position is the position it may attain when the device is folded for storage or transportation.
Intermediate the ends of the base there is welded to the side portions 2 a transverse wire 2E). On this is mounted a supportingdevice 22, also of wire and similar to the supporting device i0 except that in'this instance it is provided with two loops indicated at 2li, each associated with clamping extensions 26. Extending downwardly from these and looped about the wire 2Q are portions 2B, which are reversely turned, as indicated at 30, to provide stops limiting counter-clockwise motion, of the means 22 to a vertical position thereof with respect to the base. By reason of the limiting positions of the two holding elements I0 and 22 it will be clear that a substantial amount of tension may be exerted on the strand clamp by the two means.
A wire 32 is welded to the frame adjacent and parallel to the portion 6. On this is pivoted a supporting element for balls of cord, the element comprising upright portions 34 joined by a horizontally extending portion 36. The supporting element has'its wire looped about the wire 32, as indicated at 38, and then reversely turned, as indicated at I0 to provide stop elements limiting clockwise movement to a vertical position with respect to the base by engagement with the portions of the base. In order to completely fold the device into a iiatcondition, the holding element just described may be turned in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in the gure downwardly upon the side portions 2 of the base and then the holding means 22 may be folded clockwise upon it. The result is a quite compact device whicnmay be readily stored or transported.
'Ihe use will be obvious from the description I and the general knowledge of the use of similar devices heretofore in Balls 42 of cotton strands 44 may be dropped into theloops 24 and Y the finished portion offthe product pulled out of the clamping means and advanced so as to bring portions of the strands M substantially devoid of the loops 46 in the space between theholding means. Tension is again applied by bringing the strands M into the clamping portions 26 of the holding means and the voperation may then be resumed. f
It will be clear that variations may be made in the embodiment of the invention Without departing from its scope as dened in the following claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: ll. A weaving frame comprising a base structure, a strand holding means on said base structure, a second strand holding meanson said base structure spaced from the first holding means. both of said holding means being pivoted to said base structure, and means limiting pivoting ol' said holding means towards. each other, both holding means -being pivotable in a direction away from each other into ilatwise relationship with the base structure.
2. A weaving frame comprising a base structure,a strand holding means on said base structure, a second strand holding means formed of Wire on said base structure spaced from the first holding means, both of said holding means being pivoted to said base structure, and means limiting pivoting of said holding means towards each other, bothholding means being pivotable in `a direction away from eachother into atwlse relationship with the base structure.
3. A weaving frame comprising a base structure provided with a pair oi crosswise extending., wires, a strand holding means `formed of wire pivoted on one of said crosswise wires, a secondstrand holding means pivoted on the second ot said crosswise wires and spaced from the first.

A weaving frame comprising a base structure, a strand holding means formed of wire on said base structure; a second strand holding means formed of wire on said base structure spaced from the ilrst holding means, each of said strand holding means having closely approaching parallel portions of their wire forming means for receiving and clamping strands, both of said ho ing means being pivoted to said base structur and means limiting pivoting of said holding means towards each other.
5. A weaving frame comprising a base structure, a strand holding means on said base structure, a second strand holding means on said base structure spaced from the first holding means, both of said holding means being pivoted to said base structure, and means limiting pivoting of said holding means towards each other.
6. A weaving frame comprising a base struc.
ture, a strand holding means formed of wire on said base structure, a second strand holding means formed of wire on said base structurespaced from the rst holding means, each of said ,strand holding means comprising closely arranged substantially parallel portions of their wire adapted to receive and clamp strands and each provided with a loop at the end of said closely arranged portions to provide an eye through which a strand may freelyvmove but in which it is limitedagainst lateral movements.
