QUICK CHANGE PUNCH AND PUNCH HOLDER Filed Sept. 21, 1937 1 FOR EYS Patented Aug. 23, 1938 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE QUICK CHANGE rUNcn AND norm:
PUNCH Arthur Boone, Jackson, Mich. 4
Application September 21, 1937, Serial No. 164,933
the punch or holding plate so that the said punch can be changed with dispatch and be automatically lined up, irrespective of the shape of the stamping end of the punch, whether oval, square or round, and the fitting of said punch with the holder plate being had through a plunger, which is injected into the milled areas of both the said shank and holder plate, the plunger being retained in the milled areas through lock screws.
Another object of the invention is the provision of'a structure of this character, wherein a die can be readily'and .quickly fitted in place for coaction with the punch and properly aligned for the cooperation with each other and thus avoiding the necessity for making a new line-up when changing the punches.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein the same is novel in its make-up and assures quick changing of die and punch without liability of the loosening of the said punch or die inthe use thereof. a
A further object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, which is simple in its make-up, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in operation, changeable with dispatch, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a punch anddie showing the invention applied thereto. 1 I I Figur'e2 isja sectionalv'i'e'w on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.-' '.1--'
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation of the punch detached. v
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. r
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a punch and B a die cooperating there'- with, the shank ill of this punch being releasably fitted in a retainer body II and such punch at the stamping end thereof may be round, oval, square or other required shape or of any conventional form, the stamping end being indicated at l2. The retainer body II has providedtherein a bore," receiving the shank Ill of the'punch A.
The shank Ill of the punch A at one side thereof is formed with a socket ll diagonally disposed and opening in such direction through one side of said shank while adapted to register with this socket II and aligned therewith is a way it which opens into an internally threaded circular pocket I. which extends through the outermost face of the body I I, being parallel with the bore l2. Accommodated within the pocket I! are removable inner and outer lock screws I1 and I2, respectively,
these having wrench engaging sockets I! and 20. respectively, aligned with each other and accessible from without the pocket.
Insertable on removal of the screws II and 20 through the pocket I! into the way Ill and the socket I4 is a plunger 2| which fastensthe shank ill of the punch A in the bore IS in the body ll and in this manner the punch is made secure and is quickly detachable from the retainer body. The inner screw l'l retains the plunger 2| in the way II and socket ll..
The die B in one side thereof has the diagonally disposed socket 22 opening through the periphery or side of the same while adapted to register'and align with this socket 22 is an internally threaded bore 22 formed in the holder 24 for said die and this bore opens through the upper face of the holder. Insertable in the bore 22 to engage the socket 22 is a locking screw 28. being threaded.
in said bore 22 for the releasing of the same and is accessible at the top of the holder 24. The screw 2' at its outer accessible end is formed with a wrench engaging recess 21 for convenience in working the screw home or its removal from the bore 22.
The mounting of the punch and the die assures a change of these in a minute's time and enables automatically the line-up therebetween.
What is claimed is:
1. A structure of the character described comprising a retainer body having a receiving bore for a punch, means entirely within said body for the holding of the punch in said bore, and lock screws fitting said body and maintaining the said means entirely within the body, the said screws having wrench engaging sockets aligned with each other and accessible without the body and one screw being innermost with respect to the other screw.
2. A structure of the character described comprising a retaining body having an opening therein, a member removably fitting said opening, a single element retaining means wholly within the body, disposed for engaging the member in said opening at an acute angle thereto and accessible from without the body, and adjustable means fitting the body and releasably holding the re-
