I 4 claims. v(o1. 22e- 31) This invention relates to improvements in funnels and more especially to a novel funnel for refilling barrels or drums.
One of the objects of the invention is to pro vide a funnel which may be attached to a barrel lying on its side with the spout of the funnel extending into an opening in the head of the barrel.
Another object is to supply a funnel of this character which may be temporarily secured to the head of the barrel by simply inserting the spout of the funnel into the barrel opening and allowing a lug or projection on the funnel spout to interlock with the flange ring of the barrel head.
A further object is to provide a funnel for filling or re-lling barrelsv that will allow the ready escape of air fromthe barrel to facilitate rapid filling or re-lling.
A still further object is to supply a funnel of this kind which is of simple, inexpensive construction and one which will be very durable in service.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionV consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved funnel shown attached to a barrel that is illustrated in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is another elevation of the funnel taken at right angles to the View of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 3 designates a conventional barrel or drum provided with a head 4. The head has the usual ange ring 5 surrounding the opening through which liquid is introduced into the drum.
My improved funnel is preferably formed of metal and it comprises a hopper 6 having a laterally extending spout 1 at its lower end that is adapted to be inserted through the opening i the head of the drum.
A lug or projection 8 extends downwardly from the bottom portion of the spout and is designed to contact the lower edge portion of the flange ring when the spout is introduced into the opening.
Resilient legs 9 have their upper end portions secured to the hopper as indicated at I0, and these legs are preferably of bow shape. Consequently when the spout is introduced into the opening, the legs will bear against the head of the drum at the points ll and I2 and they will act to keep the lug 8 in engagement with the flange ring. Hence even though the hopper is lled with relatively heavy liquid, the funnel will remain in position without liability of tipping. Furthermore, as the spout is of smaller external diameter than the internal diameter of the flange ring, a substantially annular passageway will be provided between the spout and ring to allow rapid discharge of air from the barrel during filling.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction, operation, and advantages of the improved funnel may be readily understood by those familiar with such devices, and while I have disclosed what I now consider to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, I appreciate that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A funnel of the character described, comprising a hopper having a laterally extending discharge spout at its lower end portion, lug means arranged on the exteriorof said spout and adapted to engage the wall of an opening through which the spout is inserted, and resilient means operatively connected to the hopper and adapted to engage said wall for maintaining the lug in engagement with said wall, said resilient means including legs secured to the hopper and extending downwardly below said spout.
2. A funnel of the character described, comprising a hopper having a laterally extending discharge spout at its lower end portion, lug means arranged on the exterior of said spout and adapted to engage the wall of an opening through which the spout is inserted, and resilient means operatively connected to the hopper and adapted to engage said wall for maintaining the lug in engagement with said wall, said` lug means projecting downwardly from the bottom of the spout, and said resilient means consisting of bow shaped legs having their upper ends secured to the hopper, said legs extending downwardly be low the spout and straddling the latter.
3. A funnel adapted for filling a barrel or the like lying on its side comprising a hopper having a laterally extending discharge spout at its lower end to be inserted in an opening in the head of the barrel, a lug extending downwardly from the bottom of the spout and adapted to engage the interior of the head of the barrel below said cumbent barrel or the like, lug means arranged on the exterior of said spout and adapted to engage the wall of an opening through which the spout is inserted, and legs extending downwardly below said spout and having their upper end operatively secured to the hopper, said legs being adapted to engage the head of the barrel.
