This invention relates to writing machines or typewriters of the character having changeable type which are supported .or borne by'a shuttle, the invention having for its primary object to 5 provide an improved combination of mechanisms in the machine for 'carrying out the writingoperation.
Heretofore two kinds of typewriting machines have been provided each'having its own advan-vv itsv limitations. For example. one

The other type of'machine has a type shuttle which maybe inthe form of a wheel or segment, with types thereon with which a hammer engages to perform the printing on an interposed work sheet. This type of machine possesses the 'desirable feature of interchangeability, the type shuttle 25 being replaceably mounted in the machine, but it also possesses the feature, which is sometimes objectionable, of rolling up the work sheet for insertion into a basket from which it is fed to the printing point. This type of machine, has also been limited toa three bank key board. An object of the present invention is toy provide a machine which possesses all of the advantages -of both types of machines, in other words,va machine having a four bank key board, changeable type sets, and the feature of accommodating the i work sheet without rolling it up; the machine being simple in construction so that it may be manufactured to sell at a price which compares favorably with the other commercial typewriting 4o machines on the market.

The key levers 4 are divided into groups A and B, the .group A being disposed in approximately^ or in other words` to the right ofthe middle of the machine (Fig. 2) and the group B being disposed in'the approximate other half of the frame, to the left of the middle of the machine, the key levers of said groups A and B having cooperation with frames or levers C and D respectively which are located at the rear of the machine frame I and are hereinafter described.

Secured to said shuttle on the rear side thereof, and located between said shuttle and the plate 8, is a pinion 23, said pinion being disposed concentric 25 to the pin 20. ' As the shoe 50 reaches the end of its travel \by reason of the pawl 54 engaging the left' hand thread 65, the plate 10 of said shoe will engage the related contact pins 1| thereby closingthe electrical circuit of the solenoid 82 by which the armature 8| will be drawn inwardly of the solenoid coil thereby causing the hammer 'I8 of the lever'19 to strike the type bar 35 which has been moved into alignment therewith and which type bar corresponds to the particular keylever 4 operated. During the striking operation of the hammer 'I9 on the position type bar 35, the desired character 96 will print on the work sheet on the platen 75 97 of the carriage 98 which is disposed rearwardso thatthe bar 5| is ly of the type carrier 22. As each type bar will carry a pair of type characters one above the other, the upper character will be used for print- Y ing by shifting theplaten into printing position with the upper character in the usual manner. g After printing, the key lever is returned to its normal position by a spring element or the like (not shown) and the stop pin 9 will be returned by the spring I2 thus releasing the shuttle for return movement.
The pawl 54 after completing its travel by means of the left hand thread 65 will be permitted to be released by the lug 'l5 thereof riding olf the guide strip 16 and the spring 99 of the lever C will return said lever to its neutral 15 position 'as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the release of the pawl 54, the spring 55 which was compressed by the pawl to effect the longitudinal movement of the bar 5| for actuating the lever 59, will be released so that,it can expand to an 20 equalizing position with the other springs' 53 and 55 on said bar 5|, and thus return the pawl 54 into its neutral position. As the bar 5| was moved by the pawl 54 relatively to the intermediately disposed bearing 52, the other Ipawl 54 25 (at the right in Figs. 6 and 7) was also caused to travel on the bar 5| by its associated springl 55, located between said pawl land the collar 56 secured to the shaft 5| although said pawl 54 which is associated with the other half B of the 30 key levers was not brought into engagement with the right hand threaded portion 66, the travelling movement therefore given to the latter pawl 54 being an idle movement caused by the spring 55, 4said pawl being returned to normal axially 35 of the shaft 5| by the spring 53.
As the bar 5l is moved to its normal or entral position, the lever 59 which is secured to one end of said bar by the screw lilA will also return the shuttle 22 to its normal position through the 4o rack 25 and pinion 23.
Obviously, the release ofthe pawl 54 from engagement with the left hand thread 65 of the motor shaft 64 will cause the electrical circuit in which the solenoid 82 and pins "Il are located 45 to be broken by reason 'of the plate 10 of theI shoe 50 being withdrawn from contact with the pins 1|. Upon the breaking or opening of the electrical circuit, the striking hammer 18 of the solenoid 82 is swung to its normal position by 50 means of a spring 82a.
When a key lever 4 of group B is depressed at its denoting end, the universal bar or treadle 11 of frame or lever D will vbe elevated by the rear end 94 of the depressed key lever thereby caus- 55 ing the lever D to` swing rearward on the shaft 43 and carry the pawl 54, supported on the lever D, into engagement with the right hand thread 66 ofthe continually revolving motor shaft 6d.'
The engagement of the toothed end of the pawl ,G0 54 with the revolving right hand thread 66 will cause the pawl Vto be moved outwardly along the shaft 64 thereby compressing its related spring 55 on -the bar 5| suillciently to act upon the adjacent collar 56, the action of the pawl against the 65 spring 55 and collar 56 causing the bar 5| to be moved in the same direction but in an opposite direction to which it is moved when a key lever 4 of the A group is depressed and consequently the lrack 25 in mesh with the gear 23 will swing the 70 shuttle 22 in an opposite. directionV or counterclockwise in Fig. 2.
It is to be noted that the key levers 4, of both the A and B groups, which are located near the middle of the machine, are provided with the cam lugs 1 and act t s directly on the pins 9 whereas the outer disposed key levers 4 .are provided with the lugs I1 which' act on .ment of intermediate stop pins I4 through the intermediate levers I5. Upon the release of the operated key :lever 4, all of the actuated parts will be returned to their normal positions, said key lever per-- mitting the return of the operated frame C or D to'eiect the release ofthe pawl 54 from its associated threaded part of the motor shaft 54, whereupon the springs 53 'and 55 will return the bar- 22, the stop pin I4 of lever I5 being forcedl from the path of travelof the projection 95 of the shuttle 22 by the spring I4a when the key lever 4 is released. As the bar 5I moves back to normal from either side of its machine the active -svvitch4 plate 10 leaves the contact pins 1I to open the circuit in which the coil A92 of the solenoid is connected thus deenergizing the solenoid and permitting the return of the hammer 19.
It will be understood that the type`bar shuttle 22 moves through different angular distances del pending on the selected type bar; the extent of movement depending on the active stop pin corresponding to the selected type bar and the associated key lever. Further that the active connecting pawl 54 moves always the same distance laterally of the machine irrespectiveof the extent of angular movement of the shuttle. Consequently the element 55 vwhich transmits movement of the pawl 54 to rod or bar 5I is resilient or in the form of av spring to compensate for such variable movements of the shuttle. In other words. whenone of the inner typebars is selected theshuttle 22 is arrested early before the pawl has moved the full length of the screw on the motor shaft 54. Under these conditions the pawl continues to'move laterally and further com` presses the spring 5I until the outer end of the screw is reached by said pawl. Thus eachspring 55 serves as a compensation device by which the shuttle is moved a variable distance b y the pawl 55 having a movement the extent of which is always constant.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing instrumentalities including a type carrier, a horizontal pivot extending fore-and-aft of the machine about which the type shuttle may be actuated towards either side of 'the machine. from Aa normal position, key levers, a vertical plate extending transversely of the machine and arranged above the key levers, settable stop pins on vsaid plate, said pins being arranged in an arc extending around the axis of said pivot, an arm on said type carrier to engage any one of said pins to arrest thetype carrier in its various positions, upwardly extending members on the key levers near the middle of the machine to engage the stop pins near the middle of said plate, two groups. of intermediate levers each4 group being associated with the key levers near the side of the machine, and two fulcrum rods, one at each side of said plate whereby the two groups of interlmediate levers are pivotally supportedl on said plate, the lower ends of the intermediate levers being engageable by the associated key levers to actuate the intermediate levers, the intermediate levers slanting upwardly and inwardly of the' machine so that their upper ends engage the pins at the outer ends of 'the set to actuate them, the fulcrum rods slanting upwardly and outwardly on said plate.
33.- In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing instrumentalities including a type carrierl rotatable about a fixed axis, means including a power shaft, intermediate means between said power shaft and said type carrier whereby the type carrier may be actuated by the power'shaft, a group of key levers,a connecting element com'- monto the key levers of the group whereby the intermediate means may be connected'with the power shaft, key levers, means including a device operable by any one of the key levers to render said connecting element eiective, and means independent of the rendering means to retain the be connected differently with connecting element in its connected position until after the type carrier has 'been moved to position the selected type at the printing point. y

In a typewriting machine, the combination of printing instrumentalities including a type car-V rier rotatable about a fixed axis, means including a power shaft, intermediate means between said power shaft and said type carrier whereby the type carrier may be actuated by the power shaft, key levers, a connecting element whereby the intermediate means may be connected with the' power shaft. means operable by the key levers to render said connecting element effective, and a plate along which the connecting element travels, said plate being effective to lock the connecting element in its connected position until after the type carrier has been located in its selected position.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a movable type carrier having a horizontal axis, stop pins adapted to be located in the path of travel of said carrier, type bars on said carrier, a hammer cooperable with the type bars to actuate them one at a time against said platen, a power shaft, means cooperable with saidcarrier to actuate the type bar carrier in opposite directions from a normal position for positioning any .one of the type bars in striking alignment with said hammer, key levers, and other means adapted to be actuated by any of said key levers for engaging said first mentioned means with said power shaft. f

A writing machine having a platen, a swingable type carrier disposed in an upright position forwardly of said platen and in a plane extendingv parallel to the axis of the platen, type bars onsaid carrier a hammer cooperable with the type bars of said carrier, a ypower shaft, means cooperable .with said carrier and said power shaft to'actuate said carrier vfor positioning the type bars of said carrier in striking alignment with said hammer, a projection on said carrier, and a series of stop pins each being operable into the path of travel of said projection to arrest said carrier.
37. A writing machine having a platen, a swingable type' carrier disposed in an upright position forwardly of said platen and in a plane extending parallel to the axis of the platen, type bars on said carrier, a hammer cooperable with the type bars of said carrier, a power shaft, means cooperablewith said carrier and said power shaft to actuate said carrier for positioning the type bars of said carrier in striking alignment with said hammer, a series of stop pins each being operable into the, path of travel of said carrier, and av series of key levers each having cooperation with said means and a respective stop pin.
38. A writing machine having a platen, an oscillatory type carrier disposed forwardly of said platen, a hammer cooperable with the type of said carrier to print against said platen, a power shaft,
intermediate means cooperable with said carrier. said intermediate means including a member to be engaged with said power shaft to connect it l therewith so that the intermediate means may be actuated by the power shaft for positioning the type carrier in striking alignment with said hammer, stop pins adapted to be positioned in the path oi travel of said carrier, key levers each being cooperable with a respective stop pin, other means adapted to be actuated by any of said key'levers for engaging said `member of the intermediate means with said power shaft, and
means to return said intermediate means and the type carrier independently of the power shaft.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a type. bar carrier, type bars thereon, means by whlch\the type bars are pivotally mounted on the carrier, a type bar actuator, means to actuate the type carrier to selectively position any one of the type bars at the type bar actuator, each type bar being detachable for replacement, and means to demountably support the type carrier on the actuating means therefor so that the type carrier may readily be substitutedby another one for printing with another style of types.
40. In al typewriting machine, the-combination of a platen, means including a rotatable device having two opposite faces, a stationary bracket adjacent to one face of said device, means to rotatably support said device on said bracket, a
carrier element havingtype bars thereon to print against said platen, and means Afor detachably mounting said carrier element on said device at the face opposite to the irst mentioned face of said device soas to give ready accessy to the /mounting means for the purpose of conveniently attaching or detaching the type bar carrier. element.
41'. In a typewriting machine, the combination'c of a platen, a rotatable device, stationary means about which saiddevice may be rotated, a carrier element having type`bars thereon to print against the platen, said carrier element extending about cluding type bars to print against said platen, of
two separable elements, means to rotatably support one of said elements, the type bars being supported onthe other one of vsaid elements, and means including members on one of said elements to cooperate with portions on the other element to locate the type bar carrying element accurately on the rotatable element, said last mentioned means operating to secure the type barcarrying element on the rotatable elemen 43. In a typewriting machine, the combination f of a support, type elements detachably mounted on said support so that any one of them may be substituted by another one, meansto actuate said support to selectively register any one of the type elements with the printing point, the actuating means including a bracket, and means for demountably attaching said support to said bracket so that it may readily be substituted by another support-having a different kind of types.
