Description

f UNITED STATES Dv BP KEI'PER' ANDAi c; Fox, onv rnxAnA, Texas.
lMPnovEMsNT' In sanoinstal/icHua-Eef Specification forming pai-trof Letters Patent No.l `2l-,273., dated August 24, 185`8.
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that we, 1)..13. Knrrnaaud A. C. FOX, of Texana, in `Athe county of Jackson and State of Texas, have inventeda new and Improved SeedingMachine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side sectional elevation ot' our improvement. Fig. 2 is a planor top 4View of thesame. 4
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts inthe two figures,
i This inveutionconsists in the employment or use-of a perforated endless band which is 'fitted in a seed box and arranged, as hereinl after shown, .for distributing the seed,.in connection with a reciprocatingrotatiu g agitator, and an adjustable plate, K, for the purpose of preventing the seed from clogging and insuring the proper discharge of the saine from theseed-box. v
'lhe`inventionv is more particularly designed for the planting ofcottoinan'd 'other seeds, which, to insure early germination and for other causes, are planted in a moist state,'and which, in consequence ot their moisture, derange the distributingdevices of all machines hitherto constructed by causing the swelling of the working parts-an eifect due to the absorption of moisture by said parts. By our improvex ment this diculty is obviatedg,
-To enable others skilled in the art to fully1 Y understand and construct l.our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
' A represents a`seedbox,\which is placed ou a frame, B, said frame' beingsupported at its 4front and back' ends by rollersC D.
To the back part-of the fra-ine B two handles, E E, are attached.
`F is an-'endless perforated band, which may be constructed of leatherjorother suitable nna-4 terial, and which works over two rollers, G G,
placedjus't 4 below the seedboxand in such relation to-it that the upper part of the band will Work in the seed-b0xat its bottom, a rabbet -or groove, @,being made in said bottom,
in which` the band lwork"s`,`so that it will be l iush7 with the bottom." The endlessband l .F works Vthrough -apertunesb b'- made 1n the frontand back ends Zot' seed-box. and a brush, c, which serves as a cut-olis placed in front of the aperture b', which aperture is directly over aseed'- ,conveyiiig spout, H, attached to the frame B in front of the back vroller D. The shaft c of the roller D projects beyond the sides of the frame B ateach side, and a pulley, d, isattached toone end of the shaft'and a crank, e, to the opposite end. The
pulley d', by means of a crossbelt, f,- drives cal position, nearly touch the band F, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.l` v' Within the seed-box A a plate, K, is placed. This plateis hinged4 at its lower edge to the backside of the box a short distance from its bottom', and a rod or support, ,'is attached to the` upper end of thel plate. This plate, by
means of the rod or support t', may be adjusted at any angle from a vertical position to a position corresponding` with thatof the back side of the 'seedLbox This will be understood by referring to Fig. 1. f
lAs the machine is drawn along the endless band F is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, and the seed'iills the perforations in the belt, which perforationsare seed-cells. The illed/cells pass underneath the cut-otto, and as the cells pass around the back pulley the seeds are discharged `therefrom into the tube H, the lower end ot' which forms the furrow, the rollerD covering the seed. The arms for cotton-seed is moistened and rolled or agi;
tated with sandl to prevent them as muchas possible from adhering together, the object being to remove the lint or tine fuzz from off wwwthe seed. Various other kinds of seed are also frequently soaked in'water for a greater or less length of time y to insure early germination.
We would remark that, if desired, projecting ledges or cleats ax may be attached to the band F in order to facilitate or expedite the disch arge of the seed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
The combination of the endless band F, os-
