This invention relates to improvements in fuse link throwout devices for expulsion cartridges.
It is an object of this invention to provide for an expulsion fuse cartridge having a fuse link projecting therefrom, clamping elements clamping the projecting end of the fuse link and biased to pull the fuse link from the cartridge when such link has fused, such elements being independently mounted for movement to release the fuse link when the latter is pulled from the cartridge.
More specifically, it is an object to provide for an expulsion fuse cartridge having .a fuse link projecting therefrom a fuse link throwout device demountably secured to the cartridge and having a pair of independently pivoted clamping elements and one of which is biased for sliding movement, whereby to pull the fuse link from the cartridge and to subsequently release it.
A further object is to provide a fuse link throwout device which may be manufactured at a minimum cost, may be applied to standard expulsion cartridges without alteration thereof, and will be efficient in operation.
Other advantages will appear hereinafter.

The fuse cartridge comprises an insulating tube I closed at its upper end by the closure cap 2 on the upper contact ferrule 3 and having adjacent its lower end, a lower contact ferrule fl provided with Aa depending clamping arm 5 slotted at 9 to provide a pair of laterally extending internally threaded bifurcations 8. The bottom of the slot 9 serves as a Xed clamping jaw and a stud bolt E is threadedly engaged with the bifurcations 3 to serve as a movable clamping element cooperating with the bottom of the slot 9. As shown in Fig. 2, the fuse link 'l projects from the lower open end of the tube I and is tensioned in the manner hereinafter noted.
The fuse link throwout device illustrated in the drawing includes a support comprising an angularly bent supporting plate lil having an upright arm II removably secured in the groove 9 by means of the stud bolt 6 and also having an angularly depending arm I2 slotted at I3 and apertured .at I4 to provide pivot bearing I5.
The upper portion of the arm I2 is provided with an elongated aperture I6 within which a clamping rod l'I is slidably and oscillatably mounted. A knurled head I8 is provided at one end of the rod Il to afford manual manipulation of the rod. At the opposite end of the rod a clamping jaw l@ is provided and this jaw serves to hold the coil spring 20 under compression upon the rod and against the arm I2 when the jaw is in clamping position.
A clamping lever 2l comprising a rod is bent at one end to provide a pivot eye 22 pivotally engaging the pivot l5 on the arm I2 and is bent at the other end to provide a clamping finger or hook 23 complementary to the groove 24 in the clamping jaw I9.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the throwout device comprises a support I0 upon which two clamping elements In Fig. 1, the throwout device is shown as it appears before a fuse link is mounted in the tube l and tensioned by the device or as it vappears after a fuse link has been pulled from the tube and released from the device.
In Fig. 2, the throwout device is shown in clamping and tensioning engagement with the projecting end of the fuse link I.
The illustrated fuse cartridge is a standard type and a fuse link is mounted therein by passing the flexible end through the tube I from the upper end and clamping the terminal cap IA to the upper ferrule 3 by means of the closure cap 2. After the fuse link 'I has been mounted in the tube l, the projecting portion of the link at the lower end of the tube is passed over the hook 23 on the clamping rod 2l as shown in Fig. 2 and the slidable rod Il is manipulated manually by means of the head I8 to engage the clamping jaw'IS with the link 'l as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be noted that the pivot positions I5-I6 of the rods 2 l-l'l are in spaced relation to each other. Consequently, when the rod ZI is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, the distance from the hook 23 tothe pivot position I6 is shortened.
In order to take .advantage of the change in distance between the hook 23 and pivot position lt, the rod l'l is slidably and pivotally mounted at l5 to permit the clamping jaw I 9 to move with the hook 23 after the fusible 'section of the fuse link l has been fused.
The coil spring 2Q maintains the jaw I9 in clamping engagement with the fuse link 'l which, by reason of its engagement with the hook 23, holds the rods ZI-Il' in their respective positions shown in Fig. 2.
Upon fusing of the fusible section of the fuse link l, the spring 2li will cause the rods 2I-I'I to rotate downwardly about their respective pivots ifi- I6 and at the same time slide the rod I'I downwardly until the head I8 contacts the I9 and 23 are'1k freely and independently pivoted, the element I9 l support I0. After the head I8 contacts the support, further pivotal movement of the rods 2|-I1 will separate the hook 23 and jaw I9, thereby to release the fuse link l1 and permit it to drop from the fuse structure.
The above description and the drawing disclose a fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuses which is cheap to manufacture, easily installed, adapted for mounting on standard fuse cartridges without alteration in the latter, readily manipulated for operative engagement with a fuse link, and efiicient in withdrawing and dropping the fuse link from the fuse cartridge.
We claim:
l. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges having fuse links, said device comprising a supporting member adapted for mounting on said cartridges and a pair of clamping members mounted on said supporting member for independent movement thereon relative to each other, said clamping members being held in clamping relation to each other by a fuse link when clampingly engaging said link.
2. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges having fuse links, said device comprising a supporting member adapted for mounting on said cartridges, a pair of clamping members mounted on said supporting member for independent movement thereon relative to each other, and a means biasing one of said clamping members into clamping relation to the other of said members when said members are clampingly engaged with a fuse link.
3. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges having fuse links, said device comprising a support adapted for mounting on said cartridge, a pair of clamping members, each member being pivotally mounted on said support at a point spaced from the other and one of said members being also slidable on said support, and means biasing said last-mentioned member slidably toward the other of said members when said members are clamped to a fuse link, said members being held in clamping relaf tion to each other by said link.
4. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges, said device comprising a support adapted for mounting on said cartridge, said support being provided with an aperture and a pivot bearing spaced from said aperture, a clamping rod slidable in said aperture and having a clamping jaw, a second clamping rod pivoted on said bearing and having a clamping portion adapted to cooperate with said jaw, and means biasing the first-mentioned rod for sliding motion, whereby a fuse link clamped between said jaw and portion will hold said rods immobile.
5. The combination with a fuse cartridge having an open end, a contact adjacent said end,`
and a fuse link projecting from said end; of a throwout device comprising a support detachably secured to said contact, a clamping member pivotally mounted on said support and having a clamping portion engaged by said link adjacent said open end, a second clamping member slidably mounted on said support and havlng a clamping portion engaging said fuse link to hold the latter engaged with the rst-mentioned clamping portion, and a spring biasing said second clamping member into clamping engagement with said link.
6. The combination with a fuse cartridge having an open end, a contact adjacent said end, and a fuse link projecting from said end; of a throwout device comprising a support detachably secured to said contact, a clamping member pivotally mounted on said support and having a clamping portion engaged by said link adjacent said open end, a second clamping member slidably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal mounting of the rstmentioned clamping member, said second clamping member having a clamping portion engaging said fuse link to hold the latter engaged with the rst-mentioned clamping portion, and a spring biasing said second clamping member into clamping engagement with said link.
7. The combination with a fuse cartridge having an open end, a contact adjacent said open end, and a fuse link projecting from said open end; of a throwout device comprising a mounting plate detachably secured to said contact and provided with an aperture and a pivot bearing spaced from the aperture and more remote from said contact than said aperture, a clamping rod bent at one end to provide a pivot eye engaging said bearing and bent at the other end to provide a hook, a second clamping rod slidable in said aperture and having a clamping jaw coacting with said hook to clampingly engage the projecting portion of said link adjacent said open end, and a spring on the second clamping rod urging said jaw to clamping engagement with said link and biasing said rods to withdraw said link from said cartridge when said link is severed.
8. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges, said device comprising an elongated at plate having a mounting portion and a supporting portion provided with an elongated aperture and a pivot spaced from said aperture, a clamping rod slidable in said aperture and having a clamping end, a second clamping rod having at one end a pivot eye engaging said pivot and at the other end, a clamping hook, and a coil spring on the first-mentioned rod adapted to urge said clamping end to clamping cooperation With said hook when the latter is engaged with a fuse link.
9. A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges, said device comprising a support adapted for mounting on said cartridges, a pair of fuse link-clamping members pivotally mounted on said support, one of said members being slidable relative to its pivotal mounting, and means for biasing the last-mentioned member for sliding motion in one direction.

A fuse link throwout device for expulsion fuse cartridges, said device comprising a support adapted for mounting on said cartridges, and a pair of fuse link-clamping members pivotally mounted on said support, one of said members being slidable relative to its pivotal mounting and biased for sliding motion and the other of said members being biased for pivotal motion when said pair of members are in clamping relation to each other.
