3 Claims.
\ Our invention relates to cnice furniture, and more particularly to improvements in convertible typewriter cabinets.
The primary object of our invention is to prokvide a simply constructed cabinet equipped with a disappearing typewriter support readily movable from a folded position within the cabinet to `an `unfolded position to'form a flat top typewriter `supporting desk@` 1 Another object is to provide in conjunction with the above, a disappearing typewriter support movable from a folded to an unfolded position to convert the cabinet into a desk, together with desk forming members disappearing in the cabinet with the support.
Still another object is to provide a cabinet equipped with improved folding typewriter supporting means especially designed to be easily and quickly folded and unfolded.
Other objects together with the nature of our improvements will be readily understood when the following discription and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in transverse vertical section of a cabinet constructed in accordance with our invention and showing the cabinet converted into the form of a desk.
o Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the typewriter support in folded and o disappearing position.
In its preferred embodiment our invention comprises a rectangular cabinet, designated and including side panels 2, a rear panel 3, a bottom Wall 4, front and rear corner legs 5, and a top 40 frame 6 extending around the top edges of the panels 2 and 3 and across the front legs 5. At its front the cabinet is provided with a pair of doors, one of which is shown at hinged to the front legs 5 as at 8. A top 9 is hinged to the 45 rear of the frame 6, as at IIJ, to fold down over the latter and close the top of the cabinet.
Within the cabinet is a pair of opposed vertically disposed lazy tong devices and I2, respectively, each comprising an upper pair of angularly related bars I3 and a lower pair of similarly related bars I4. Fixed in the lower part of the cabinet I, at opposite sides thereof, is a pair of horizontal bars I5 for supporting th-e lazy tong devices and I2, respectively, and upon which said devices are mounted as follows. The lower (Cl. B12- 24) end of one ofthe bars1|4 of each lazy tong device is pivoted, as at'` I6, to the related supporting-bar I5, whereas the other bar I4 isslidably connected to said bar I5 as by a stud Il passing through a horizontally disposed slot Iin said bar |5 -vso 't that said devices and I2 may be folded dow-nwardly into the lower part of the cabinet or, unfolded to position the upperends ofthe bars I3 adjacent the top edge of the cabinet.
A typewriter supporting` table is` mounted` on theupper ends of the devices I I and |2- in the following manner. Fixed to the under side of said table I9, in any suitable manner, and at the opposite side edges thereof is a pair of opposed horizontal bars 29 parallel with the bars I5. The pairs of bars I3 are connected to the pair of bars 29, respectively, in the same manner as described, with reference to the bars |4 and I5, by pivots 2| and studs 22, the latter passing through slots, as at 23, in said bars 20. Each lazy tong device and I2 vis tensioned for unfolding movement by a spring 24 one end of which `is connected to an ear 25 on one of the bars I 4,the other end being connected to an ear 26 on the related supporting bar I5. Links 2l having their opposite ends connected to lugs 28 and 29 fixed to the tabl-e I9 and top 9, respectively, connect the top 9 to the table I9 so that when said top is swung to closing position the lazy tong devices |I and I2 are folded down into the cabinet I lowering the table therein to a suitable hidden position and, conversely,
' when said top is swung open to a substantially vertical position, said devices are unfolded and the table I9 elevated to a position flush with the frame 6. In this connection it is to be noted that the slots I8 and 23 are of the proper length to limit movement of the studs and 22 therein, and limit movement of the table I9 in said positions. v
Hinged to the top of the table I9, as at 39, at the opposite side edges thereof, is a pair of leaves 3| adapted in the elevated position of the table I9 to lie flat against the sides of the frame 6 and form extensions at the sides of the cabinet I. The arrangement of the leaves 3| is such that by swinging them on their hinges 30 into substantially right angular relation to the table I9 they may be lowered with said table into the cabinet I to disappear with said table.
It may be stated that the tensile strength of the springs 24 is such that the weight of the table I9, typewriter 32 thereon, and the leaves 3| will be counter-balanced by said springs in the elevated position of said table. It will be noted that the leaves 3| in their extended positions tend to fulcrum under their own weight on the frame '6 and sustain the table in elevated position.
In the foregoing our invention has been described as embodying certain detailsl of construction and relation of parts, but is to be understood that right is herein reserved to changes in details and relation of parts within the scope of the appended claims. Y
What we claim is:
1. A typewriter cabinet open at its upper end and comprising, a table for supporting a typewriter, lazy tong devices supporting said table for vertical movement inwardly and outwardly of the cabinet, stops for limiting outward movement of said table to the plane of saidl upper end to close the latter, a pair of leaves on opposite sides of said table, respectively, hinged thereto to be swung over and against they upper edges of said cabinet when said table is located in said plane, and a top for the cabinet hinged thereto and operatively connected to said table to move the same.
2. A typewriter cabinet open at its upper end and comprising, a table for supporting a typewriter, lazy tong devices supporting said table at its opposite edges for vertical movement inwardly and outwardly of the cabinet and tensioned to move said table outwardly, stops for limiting outward movement', of the table to the plane of the upper end of the cabinet to close said end, a pair of leaves on opposite sides of said table, respectively, hinged thereto to be swung over and against the upper edges of said cabinet when said table is located in said plane, and a top for the cabinet hinged thereto and operatively connected to said table to move the same.
3. A typewriter cabinet comprising, a table for supporting a.typewriter, means for supporting said table for'movement of the latter inwardly and outwardly of said cabinet and comprising a pair of parallel bars secured to opposite sides of the table, respectively, a pair of similarly arranged bars secured in the bottom of the cabinet at opposite sides thereof respectively, a pair of lazy tong devices pivotally and slidably connected to bars of the first and second mentioned pairs respectively, springs tensioning said devices to urge the same in a direction to move the table outwardly, cooperating stop devices on said bars and lazy tong devices, respectively, for limiting inward and outward movement of said table, a pair of leaves hinged to opposite side edges of the table to swing inwardly and outwardly thereof, and a top for the cabinet hinged thereto and operatively connected to the table to move the latter.
