DRAFT REGULATOR AND RELIEF DOOR Filed Dec. 24, 1936 ATTORN EY Patented Aug. 2, 1938 UNITED 1 STATES PATENT OFFICE amass nam nnoumrron' m anmsr noon Lewis 1.. emit, St. Louis. Mo. Application Deccmber :4. 1m, Serlal No. 111,511
5 Claims. to]. ass-4s) This invention relates to automatic draft regulators for heating plants arranged to automatically relieve excessive pressure that maybe developed in the heating plant. v
The obiect of my invention is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive draft regulator so arranged that it will not only regulate draft in the heating plant to which it is attached. but will also automatically relieve any excess pressure suddenly developed in the heating plant or chimney.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical side view of my drai't regulator shown partly in section and shown attached to a flue pipe which is normally connected to a heating furnace, not shown, said flue pipe also being connected to the chimney or flue, which discharges the products of combustion from the furnace to the outside atmosphere.
Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a modified arrangement of that part shown in section in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral i 7 indicates a flue pipe which is normally connected ing in cylinder 2.
to a heating iurnace not shown. and which is also connected to the flue leading to the outside atmosphere. The numeral 2 indicates a sheet metal cylinder which has extended arms I, and arranged to be attached to the flue pipe. and said flue pipe having an opening corresponding to the cylinder 2, and registering with the open- The numeral 4 indicates a cylindrical ring attached to the sheet metalcylinder 2, and arranged to carry the regulator door 5 on a pivot bearing secured to the door, and having hearings in the ring I as shown in Figure 2. The numeral I indicates a lochng nut device, operating in the slot I. for the adiustment of a counterbalance weight (not shown) similar to that shown on Patent 1,809,005 to It. A. Walker.
The numeral 0 indicates a hinge member which is pivoted on the pin II, which pin is mounted on the projecting members ii, secured to the door I. The numeralil indicates a felt cushion arranged between the hinge memberiandthedoorltoreducenoiseintheoperation of the device. The numeral II indicates a flatspringwhichissecuredtothelowerpart oitheringlbythescrew l l. Thespringll is arranged to contact with the hinge member iwhenthedoorisinaclosedpositiomasshown inrigurel. .Ifexeesslvepresnireisdeveloped on the inside ofthe door I, the spring I! will yieldandpermitthedooritoopeninareverse position, and thereby relieve pressure in the flue pipe I' and connected parts. As soon as pressure is relieved. the door twill fall back to normal position. and the hinge 0 will swing out so as to'pass easily over the end of the spring ll, without oflering any resistance to the door in getting back to normal operating position. The numeral It indicates a shield cover for the spring I}. and serves no purpose other than to cover the spring and prevent tampering therewith. The cover it is secured to the projecting lugs II on the lower part of the ring 5 by the screws I1. In Figure 3 I have shown a modifled yielding arrangement. The weight II is pivoted at ll, and said pivot is secured in the lower part of theringi. Theweight lllsarrangedtocontact with the-hinge member I in exactly the same way that the spring ll contacts with the hinge member 0. In the event that excess pressure is developed on the inside oi the door 5, the weight II will yield in the same general way that the spring will yield as before described.
