This invention relates to improvements in railway car construction.
For the purpose of rendering productive certain wood sheathed house cars, a large number 5. of which are owned by the railroads, a repair construction has been conceived, developed and at the present is being successfully employed by virtue of which this purpose has been attained with a minimum of expense. Brieliy, this repair 1.0 construction involves salvaging of the metallic underframe of the cars and their reemployment with metallic car sides substituted for the deteriorated wooden sides of the repaired cars. It is customary in these repairs to dispose the posts l and metallic sheathing `of the new car sides outwardly of the side sills of the underframe to thereby obtain a metallic car of increased cubical capacity.
There are, however, certain types of railway cars to which such repair construction is not' :applicable. Notable of these types is the gondola car in which the spacing of the side sills of the metallic underframe is of such extent that the hereinabove briefly referred to repair construci tion cannot be utilized. The limitation as to width of car imposed by the tunnel clearance diagram which controls car design precludes the use of such repair' construction. This condition applies as well to some constructions of house 3.0. cars and the repair construction ofthe instant invention is directed to these cars as well as to cars wherein increasedv width is not a desideratum.
Applicant is thus confronted with vand it is 35 the main object of this invention to overcome the problem of releasing the capital investment represented vby these cars and in an economical and facile manner to convert them to the category of revenue producing rolling stock of the rail- 40 roads.
It is a further object to attain these ends by the utilization of the metallic underframes of these cars which are still serviceable and so re- P claim an essential part thereof. 4a With these and other objects in view which will become clear as the description of the invention proceeds, this .invention comprises the novel structure and combinationof parts hereinafter 50 described and particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.

In Figure l of the drawings there is illustrated the portion of a car side wall construction applicable to a repaired or converted car, and to new car construction, extending from and in cluding a portion of the door opening provided in said side wall to one end thereof.- It will be understoodthat the remain-ing portion of the car side wall is complementary to that shown and that the car side wall construction on the opposite side of the car is of similar construction.
'I'he'railway house car illustrated is designated generally 'by the reference numeral IU and the 30 particular car chosen to illustrate the invention is a converted house car built upon an underframe of an original gondola car. The underframe comprises essentially a center sill, not shown, and cross members II, two of which are shown in Figure l of the drawings. To the ends of the cross members there is secured side sills I2. Each of these side sills is of channel shape in section and embodies a vertically disposed web I3 and inwardly extending upper and lower hor- 40 izontal flanges I4 and I5. Each of the side sills I2`is preferably reinforced by means of a member I6 where such side sill extends across the door opening Il. The spacing of the side sills of a gondola car is` usually large, the spacing of the sills of the underframe illustrated being 9 51/8.
Upon the hereinabove described underframe the side Walls of the converted car are erected preferably in the form of preassembled units. Each of the side walls embodies a Z-shaped side plate Ill extending from end-to end of the car and arranged with its web I9 in a substantially horizontal plane, its inner flange 2i) extending vertically upwardly and its outer ange 2I `eX- tending vertically downwardly from the web.
The side plate I8 is reinforced across the door opening I1 and for a desired distance beyond said door opening by means of a metallic member 22 preferably in the form of a channel. The reinforcing member 22 is arranged with its web 23 vertical and secured to the upstanding flange 28 of the side plate I8 as by means of rivets 24. The upper and lower flanges 25 and 25 of the reinforcing member 22 extend inwardly of the car.
Door posts 21 which define the horizontal extent of the door opening and intermediate posts 28 of the car side wall construction extend between theside plate I8 and the side sill I3 of the car underframe. Each of the door posts 21 is Z-shaped in section and is arranged with its web 29 substantially parallel to the side wall, its flange 38 extending inwardly at right angles to said side wall and its flangel 3| extending outwardly at right angles to the side wall. At its upper end each door post is secured to the depending leg 2| of the side plate I8 as by means of rivets 32 extending through the web` 29 of the door post and through said depending leg of the'side plate. Additionally, each door post is secured to the reinforcing member 22 which, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, extends downwardly below the web I9 of the side plate and provides, together with said web and the leg 2I of the side plate, a pocket or space for the reception of the upper end of each of the door posts. The securement to the reinforcing member 22 is effected by means of an angle member 33, one leg 34 of which is secured as by means of rivets 35 to the inwardly directed leg 3U of the door post while the other leg 35 is secured to the web 23 of the reinforcing member 22 as by means of rivets 31.
Certain of the intermediate posts as well are disposed with their upper ends extending into the pocket or space defined by the side plate and its reinforcing member. Each intermediate post is of Z shape in section and arranged relative to the car side wall so that its web 38 is at right angles thereto and the inner and outer flanges 39 and 48 are parallel thereto. The upper end of each intermediate post 28 is secured to the side plate I8 as by means of rivets 4I extending through the leg 4I! of the post and the leg 2I of the side plate. The first mentioned intermediate posts 28 are, additionally, secured to the side plate reinforcing member 22 by means of an angle member 42, one leg of which is secured to the web 38 of the intermediate post by means of rivets 43, while the other leg 44 is secured to the web 23 of the reinforcing member as by means of rivets 45.
Metallic sheathing comprised of a plurality of metallic sheets 46 is secured along its upper margin to the depending leg 2I of the side plate I8 as by means of rivets 41. The metallic sheets 45 are, additionally, secured upon the outside of the door posts as by means of rivets 48. The metallic sheets are lapped upon the intermediate side posts 28 and secured to the leg 48 thereof as by means of rivets 48. Adjacent the ends of the car the last metallic sheet 43 is secured to the intermediate post as by means of rivets 5i).
The metallic sheets 46 terminate, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, above the side sills I2. These sheets are fastened to the side sill by means of an angle member 5I the lower margin of said sheets being riveted to the outside of the upstanding vertical leg 52 of said angle member by means of rivets 53. The horizontal leg 54 of the connecting angle member 5I is disposed upon the upper flange I4 of the side sill and secured thereto as by means of rivets 55. The horizontal leg 54 is preferably extended inwardly beyond the horizontal ange I4 of the side sill to provide a supporting means for the floor 56 of the car to which it is secured as by means of bolts 51.
Means is provided for the securement of the lower ends of the door and intermediate side posts to the side sill whereby a rigid, sturdy connection is obtained, thus enabling the side wall construction to function as a girder for the purpose of carying a portion of the stresses incident upon the car underframe. Referring, first, to the securement of the intermediate side posts to the side sill, this securement together with the means utilized therefor is clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 7 of the drawings. There is utilized a securing member 58 preferably in the form of a casting although it is to be understood that the securing members may be formed of structural elements or pressings if desired. Each securing member 58 for the intermediate side posts embodies a vertical upstanding leg 59 and a horizontal inwardly extending leg 60. A pair of spaced post attaching flanges ISI- 5I extend at right angles from the legs 58 and I and are arranged so as to straddle the web 38 of an intermediate side post. The securing members are disposed upon the inside of the connecting member 5I, the vertical leg 59 of each securing member 53 being riveted to the upstanding vertical leg 52 of the connecting member 5I and to the lower margin of the metallic sheathing as by means of rivets 32. The inwardly extending leg' 80 of the securing member 58 is secured to the upper flange I4 of the side sill as by means of rivets 53 which pass through the horizontal leg 54 of the connecting member 5I and said upper flange of the side sill. The post attaching flanges 8l are riveted to the web of the intermediate side post as indicated at 64.
The securing member 58 for each intermediate side post is thus secured by means of a horizontal series of rivets to the upper flange of the side sill. Additionally, each securing member 58 is rigidly secured to the web I3 of the side sill l2. To this end the securing member 58 is provided with a depending attaching flange 65 extending downwardly from the horizontal leg Bin abutting engagement with the outside of the web I3. The attaching flange 65 is secured to said web as by means'of rivets 66. In order to permit riveting of the attaching flange 55 to the web of the side sill, the horizontal leg 54 of the attaching member 5I is coped, as indicated at 61, whereby the attaching flange 65 extends through said member 5I for securement to the web of the side sill. By virtue of this construction it is apparent that each intermediate side post is rigidly secured to the side sill by securing means in two planes at right angles to each other, thereby providing a sturdy connection.
A similar securement between the lower ends of the door posts and the side sills I2 is employed. The connecting member 58 utilized for the attachment of each door post to the side sill is clearly illustrated in Figures l, 5 and 6 of the drawings. This connecting member comprises a vertical upstanding leg 59 and a horizontal inwardly extending leg 18. One portion 1I of the vertical leg 89 is disposed against the inner face of the upstanding leg 52 of the attaching member 5I which terminates adjacent the inwardly extending legBU of the door post, as clearly shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. This portion 'Ill is secured'as by means of rivets 1.12 to the upstanding leg 52 and the lower margin ofthe metallic sheathing. The other portion y"I3 of the'upstanding leg 89 is disposed against the inner face of the web 29 of the door post and-is riveted to said web and the lower margin of the metallic sheathing as indicated at M. The inwardly `extending leg lll is disposed upon the inwardly extending leg 54 of the member 5I and upon a floor supporting plate 'I5 disposed in the `door opening and is riveted, as indicated at 16, tothe upper ange I4 of the side sill I2. Post attaching flanges TI extend at right angles from the upwardly and inwardly extending legs 69 and 'I and are riveted to the inwardly extending leg 3i! of the door post as indicated at 18.
Each connecting member 68 is also secured to the web I3 of the side sill. For this purpose 7the connecting member 68 is provided -with a-depending attaching flange -19 which underlies and lis secured to the downwardly extended portion of the web 25B of the door post as by means of rivets 8d. This securement of the attaching ange `Ll to the downwardly extending portionof the web 29 of the door post occurs in spacedrelationship to the web of the side sill and, in order to provide for the securement of the attaching Viiange 'I9 of the connecting member 4t8 to the side sill, said ange is provided with inwardly oifset ends 8I and 82 which abut the web -I3 of the side sill and are riveted thereto as indicated at 83. Thus, in the case of the door posts, securement of the lower ends thereof to the side sill in planes at right angles to each other is obtained.
As indicated hereinabove, the side wall 'construction described is preferably preassembled into a unit and subsequently attached to the existing side sills. There are 'certain types of gondola cars, however, which do not utilize members separate from the side .sheathing as side sills. In the conversion of this type of gondola car and in the conversion of cars wherein the side sills must be replaced, the side sill `utilized may be embodied as a part of the car side wall unit. The incorporation of the side sill into the side wall unit, moreover, eliminates the problem of securely blocking the side wall unit which is present when the side sill is eliminated therefrom inasmuch as the side wall unit may then be supported upon the side sill. Wooden lining for the car yside wall is indicated at 84. This lining is disposed against the inner faces of the door and intermediate side posts and secured lin position by means of vertical nailing strips 85 secured to the car sheathing by means of clips 86.
The car ends, one of which is partially shown in Figure 8 of the drawings, and designated by the numeral 8l', are provided with side fianges 88 arranged in overlapping relationship with respect to the vertical margin of the metallic sheathing. The flanges 88 are secured -by means of the rivets 5l] which fasten the vertical margin of the sheathing to the adjacent Vpost 28.

It will be observed from rFigures 3, 5,16 and 7 of the drawings that the intermediate lside `,posts and the inwardly extending leg of the door lpos't terminate above the side sill. Itrwill be .apparent, as well, that the intermediate side posts and said leg of the door post lie vertically above the side sill for the main 'portion of the :depth offsaid'posts and legsothat encroachment upon the tunnel clearance lline is avoided.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modications of the details of the instant invention may be Iresorted to by those skilled in the art. such changes and modifications within the purview of the invention, which is to be limited only by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A railway house car converted from a gondola car comprising original underframe members of said gondola car including cross bearers and side sills secured to the end portions of said cross bearers, metallic door posts, metallic intermediate posts disposed above said side sills, means securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sills, side plates, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plates, metallic sheathing secured to said side lplates and to the outside of said posts, said sheathing stopping short of said side -sills and means secured to the lower margin of said sheathing and extending inwardly therefrom and fastened to said side sills, said first mentioned means having anges arranged on the inside of said means fastening the sheathing to said side sills inparallel relation to said sheathing, said means being secured to the lower margin of said sheathing.
2. A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe including a side sill, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing'to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to said side sill, metallic posts terminating above said side sill and securedat their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being secured to the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, the body portions of said brackets being disposed between Vsaid means securing said sheathing to said side sill and said posts, said body portions comprising anges secured to the lowerends of .said posts, iianges extending downwardly from said body portions through said latter sheathing securing means, said downwardly extending flanges being secured to said side sill.
3. A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe including a side sill having a vertical portion and an upper substantially horizontal inwardly extending flange, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to said sideplate, means securing said sheathing to said side sill, metallic posts terminating above said side sill and secured at their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being secured to the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, said brackets being disposed upon the inside of said means securing said sheathing to said side sill and each bracket comprising a substantially horizontal flange ovenu lapping and secured to said inwardly extending sill flange, a vertical flange extending upwardly from said horizontal flange and secured to the lower end of one of said posts and a flange extending downwardly from said bracket through said sheathing securing means and secured to said vertical portion of the side sill.
4. A railway house car comprising a metallic under-frame including a side sill having a vertical portion and an upper substantially horizontal inwardly extending flange, a metallic side plate, ymetallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said It is, therefore, intended to comprehend all sheathing to said side sill, metallic posts terminating above said side sill and secured at their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being secured to the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, said brackets being disposed upon the inside of said means securing said sheathing to said side sill and each bracket comprising a substantially horizontal ange overlapping and secured to said inwardly extending sill flange, a vertical flange secured to said means securing said sheathing to said side sill, a vertical iiange exi-ending at substantially a right angle to said first-mentioned bracket iianges and secured to lower end of one of said posts and a flange extending downwardly from said br cket through .sheathing securing means and secured to said vertical portion of said sill.
5. A railway house car comprising a metallic underfrarne including a channel shaped side sill arranged with its web vertically and its flanges extending inwardly, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, an angular metallic member having a vertical flange secured along the lower margin of said sheathing and a horizontal flange overlapping and secured to the upper inwardly ex tending iiange of said side sill, metallic posts terminating above saidside sill, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to the outside oi said posts and brackets securing the lower ends or" said posts to said side sill, each of said brackets being disposed between said angular member and the lower end of a post and comprising a horizontal ange secured to the horizontal flange of said angular member and the upper inwardly extending flange of said side sill, a vertical flange secured to the vertical ilange of said angular member, a vertical flange extending at right angles from said horizontal andl vertical anges and secured to the lower one of said posts and a depending flange secured to the web of said side sill.
6. In a metallic railway house car having a side sill, a side plate, posts secured at their upper ends to said side plate and terminating above said side sill, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and to the outside of said posts, means securing said sheathing to said sill and means for securing the lower ends of said posts to said sill, said latter means comprising a bracket for each post disposed upon the inside of said means securing said sheathing to said sill and secured to said lower end, each bracket being secured to said sill in two planes at substantially right angles to each other.
7. In a metallic railway house car having a side sill, a side plate, posts secured at their upper ends to said side plate and terminating above said side sill, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and to the outside of said posts, a member securing said sheathing to said side sill having a vertical flange secured along the lower margin of said sheathing and a horizontal ilange secured to said sill, a bracket for securing each post tc said sill, said bracket comprising a horizontal ange disposed between the post and the horizontal flange of said member and secured to said side sill, a vertical ange extending from said horizontal flange and secured to the lower end of the post and a depending iiange extending downwardly through said horizontal flange of said member and secured to said side sill.
' 8. A metallic railway house car comprising a metallic underframe including side sills, side plates, posts extending above said sills and secured at their upper ends to said side plates, the outer sides of said posts extending slightly outwardly of said side sill, metallic sheathing secured along the upper margins to said side plates, means securing said sheathing to said outer sides of said posts, said sheathing terminating short of Said sills, connecting members having vertical flanges secured along the lower margins of said sheathing and horizontal flanges extending inwardly above said sills and secured thereto and brackets secured to said connecting members, said side sills and the lower ends of said posts, said brackets having depending flanges extending downwardly through openings provided in the horizontal flanges of said connecting members to the outside of said sills, and means securing said depending flanges to said sills.
9. In a railway house car having a metallic side sill, a metallic door post of substantially Z- shape in section, said post being arranged with its web substantially parallel to said sill and its flanges at right angles thereto, said web extending downwardly below the top of said sill in outwardly spaced relation thereto and means for securing the lower portion oi said post to said sill,` said means comprising a bracket having a vertical flange secured to one of the flanges of said post and a iiange parallel to the web of said post and secured thereto in spaced relation to said sill, said latter flange extending downwardly below the top of said sill and means for securing said latter bracket flange to said sill.
10. In a railway house car having a metallic side sill, a metallic door post vof substantially Z- shape in section, said post being arranged with its web substantially parallel to said sill and its flanges at right angles thereto, said web extending downwardly below the top of said sill in outwardly spaced relation thereto, one of said post flanges extending inwardly to overlie and terminate above said. sill, and means for securing the lower portion of said post to said sill, said means comprising a bracket having a vertical iiange secured to said inwardly extending post flange and a ange parallel to the web of said post and secured thereto in spaced relation to said sill, said latter iiange extending downwardly below the top of said sill and means for securing said latter bracket flange to said sill.
11. As an article of manufacture, a bracket for the securement of a lower end of a post of a car side wall construction to a side sill of a car un dei-frame comprising a substantially horizontal flange, aY substantially vertical flange, spaced flanges extending at right angles from said rstmentioned flanges for securement to a post and a flange depending downwardly from said horizontal flange, said downwardly depending and horizontal flanges being adapted for securement to said side sill and said vertical 'harige being adapted for securement to said car side wall construction.

As an article of manufacture, a bracket for the securement of the lower end of a post of a car side wall construction to a side sill of a car underframe comprising a substantially horizontal flange, spaced flanges extending at substantially right angles from said horizontal flange for securement to a post, and a flange depending downwardly from said horizontal flange, said downwardly depending and horizontal anges being adapted for securement to said sill.
l 13; A car side wall unit adapted for the conversion of gondola and wooden sheathed house cars to metallic railway house cars, said unit comprising a metallic side sill, a metallic side plate, metallic intermediate and door posts, said intermediate posts extending above said sill, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plate and metallic sheathing, means securing the upper marginy of said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to the outside of said posts, an angular member having a Vertical flange secured along the lower margin of said sheathing and an inwardly directed horizontal flange secured to said sill, said horizontal flange being provided with spaced copes and brackets secured to the lower ends oi- 'said posts, each of said brackets comprising a vertical llange and a horizontal lla'nge disposed within the angle formed by said flanges of saidangular member, the horizontal flange of said bracket lying between said member and the lower end of one of said posts, post attaching flanges extending from said bracket flanges and secured to the lower end of said post and a downwardly depending flange, said latter flange on said brackets for said intermediate posts extending through said copes, means securing said vertical bracket flanges to said vertical flange of said angular member and the lower margin of said sheathing, means securing said horizontal bracket flanges to said sidel sill, means securing said depending bracket flanges to said side sill.
14. A car side wall unit adapted for the conversion of gondola and wooden sheathed house cars to metallic railway house cars, said unit comprising a metallic side plate, metallic intermediate and door posts, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing the upper margin of said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to the outside of said posts, an angular member having a vertical flange secured along the lower margin of said sheathing and an inwardly directed horizontal flange provided with spaced copes and brackets secured to the lower ends of said posts, each of, said brackets comprising a vertical flange andv a horizontal flange disposed within the angle formed by said flanges of said' angular member, the horizontal flange of said bracket lying between said memY ber and the lower end of one of said posts, post attaching flanges extending from said bracket flanges and secured to the lower end of said post and a downwardly depending flange, saidlatter flange on said bracket for said intermediate posts extending through said copes, and means securing said vertical bracket llanges to said vertical flange of said angular member and the lower margin of said sheathing, and means 6o; securing said depending bracket flanges to said side sill.
l5. A car side wall unit adapted to be applied to the underframe in the conversion of gondola and wooden sheathed house cars to metallicrailway house cars, said unit comprising a metallic side sill, a metallic side plate, metallic intermediate land door posts, said intermediate posts extending above said sill, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing the upper margin of said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to the outside of said posts, means securing the lower margin of said sheathing to said side sill, brackets for securing said posts to said side sill, each of said brackets being disposed upon the inside of said last mentioned means and embodying a vertical flange fastened to the lower end of a post, a vertical flange secured to said llast'mentioned means and a vertical flange extending downwardly through said last mentioned means below the top of said side sill and means securing said downwardly extending flanger to said side sill.
16. A railway house car comprising -a metallic underframe including a side sill, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathingV to said side plate, means securing said sheathing tov said side sill, metallic posts terminating above said side sill and secured at their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being secured to the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, said brackets being disposed on the inside of said means securing said sheathing to said side sill and each bracket comprising an upwardly extending vertical flange secured to the lower margin of said sheathing, a vertical flange extending at substantially a right angle from said first-mentioned Vertical flange and secured to the lower end` of a post, and a vertical flange extending downwardly through openings provided in said means securing said sheathing to said side sill and secured to said side sill.
1'7.v In a metallic railway house car, side sills provided with horizontal flanges, side plates, side posts, the spacing between said side sills and the transverse spacing between said posts being such that at least a portion of said posts extends outwardlyrof said-side sills, means securing the upper ends of said posts to said side plates, means securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sills, said latter means having horizontal' flanges secured to the horizontal flanges of said sills andv vertical flanges secured to the lower ends of said posts, metallic sheathing stopping short of said side sills, means securing said sheathing to said side plates, means securing said sheathing to the outside of .said posts and means securing said sheathing to said side sills, said latter means having vertical flanges secured along the lower margin of said sheathing and horizontal flanges disposed below the horizontal flanges of the means securing the posts to the sills and secured to said side sills.
18. A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe including a side sill having a vertical portion and an upper substantially horizontal inwardly extending flange, a metallic side plate, me-
tallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to` to saidI side plate, said sheathing being secured toV the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, each of said brackets being formed separately from said means securing said sheathing to said side sill comprising a substantially horizontal flange overlapping and secured to said inwardly extending sill flange, a vertical flange extending upwardly from said horizontal flange and secured to the lower end of one of said posts and a downwardly extending flange secured to said vertical portion of the side sill.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe including a side sill having a vertical portion and an upper substantially horizontal inwardly extending flange, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to said side sill, metallic posts terminating above said side sill and secured at their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being Secured to the outside of said posts, and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, each of said brackets comprising a substantially horizontal flange overlapping and secured to said inwardly extending sill flange, a Vertical flange secured to said sheathing, a vertical flange extending at substantially a right angle to said first-mentioned bracket flanges and secured to the lower end of one of said posts and a downwardlyA extending flange secured to said Vertical portion of said sill.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, a metallic side plate, metallic sheathing, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, means securing said sheathing to said underframe, metallic posts terminating above said underframe and secured at their upper ends to said side plate, said sheathing being secured to the outside of said posts and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said underframe, each of said brackets comprising a substantially horizontal flange overlapping and secured to said underframe, a vertical flange extending upwardly from said horizontal flange and secured to the lower end of one of said posts, said bracket flanges being disposed on the inside ofthe means securing said sheathing to Vsaid underframe, each of said brackets comprising also a downwardly extending flange secured to said underframe.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, including a side sill having an inwardly extending substantially horizontal flange, a metallic side plate, metallic posts, means securing said posts to said side plate, said posts terminating above said side sill and being disposed so that a portion of each of said posts lies vertically above said sill and a portion extends outwardly of said side sill, metallic sheathing secured to the outside of said posts in outwardly spaced relationship to said sill, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, a metallic member having a vertical flange secured to and along the lower margin of said sheathing and a horizontal flange extending inwardly and overlapping and secured to the horizontal flange of said side sill and brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side sill, each of said brackets comprising a horizontal flange lying between the lower end of one of said posts and the horizontal flange of said metallic member and secured to the inwardly extending flange of said side sill, a vertical flange secured to the vertical flange of said metallic member and a vertical flange extending at right angles to said horizontal and vertical flanges of said bracket and secured to the lower end of said post.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, including a side sill having an inwardly extending substantially horizontal flange, a metallic side plate, metallic posts, means securing said posts to said side plate, said posts terminating above said side sill and being disposed so that a portion of each of said posts lies vertically above said sill and a portion extends outwardly of said side sill, metallic sheathing secured to the outside of said posts in outwardly spaced relationship to said sill, means securing said sheathing to side plate, a metallic member having a vertical flange secured to and along the lower margin of said sheathing and a horizontal flange extending inwardly and overlapping and secured to the horizontal flange of said side sill and'brackets for securing the lower ends of said posts to said side' sill, each of said brackets comprising a horizontal flange lying between the lower end of one of said posts and the horizontal flange of said metallic member and secured to the inwardly extending flange of `said side sill, a vertical flange secured to the vertical flange of said metallic member and a vertical flange extending at right angles to said horizontal and vertical flanges of said bracket and secured to the lower end of said post, said first-mentioned vertical flange of each of said brackets being secured to the lower margin of said sheathing.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, including a, side sill having an inwardly extending substantially horizontal flange, a metallic side plate, metallic posts of Z shape in cross section, said posts being arranged with their webs at right angles to the longitudinal center line of the car and their inner and outer flanges parallel to said center line, means securing said posts to said side plate, said posts terminating above said side sill and having their outer flanges disposed outwardly of said side sill, metallic sheathing secured to the outside of said outer post flanges in outwardly spaced relationship to said side sill, means securing said sheathing to said side plate, a metallic member having a vertical flange secured to and along the lower margin of said sheathing and a horizontal flange extending inwardly below the lower ends of said posts, said horizontal flange overlapping and secured to the horizontalV flange of said side sill, and a bracket for securing each post to said side sill, each of said brackets comprising a horizontal flange lying between the lower end of one of said posts and the horizontal flange of said metallic member and secured to the horizontal flange of said side sill, a vertical flange secured to the vertical flange of said metallic member and a vertical flange extending at right angles to said first mentioned bracket flanges and secured to the web of said post.
