Its use and advantages will, it is believed. be clear from the foregoing description and need not be entered into in detail.

It is to be understood, however, that the details described in connection with my invention are illustrative rather than restrictive and that right is herein reserved to changes in such details tailing within the scope or the claims appended hereto.

What I claim is:

l. A device of the class described comprising, a receptacle having a top wall having an aperture therein, a closure lid hinged to the top wall to be swung against the same in opposite directions into opening and closing positions, respectively, a tensioning spring for said lid having its opposite ends connected to said receptacle and lid, respectively, for movement of one end past a dead center position relative to the other end and to said hinge in either direction of movement of said lid, said spring being connected to the inner face or one wall of the receptacle and to one edge of said lid for disappearance in the receptacle in either position of the lid, said top wall being slotted and said lid having an incut side edge for play of said spring during swinging oi'said lid.

A device of the class described comprising, a receptacle having a top wall provided with an aperture therein, a closure lid hinged to the top wall to be swung against the same in opposite directions into opening and closing positions, respectively, a tensioning spring for said lid having its opposite ends connected to said receptacle and lid, respectively, for movement of one end past a dead center position relative to the other end and to said hinge in either during swinging of direction of movement of said lid, said spring being connected to the inner race of one wall oi the receptacle and to one edge of said lid for disappearance in the receptacle in either position of the lid, said top wall being slotted and said lid having an incut side edge for play of said spring said lid, and a guard secured to said inner face of said wall and closing of! said spring slot and incut edge from the interior of said receptacle to prevent leakage of the contents of the receptacle through the slot and said edge of the lid.

A device of the class described comprising, a receptacle having a top wall provided with an aperture therein, a closure lid hinged to thetop wall to be swung against the same in opposite directions into opening and closing positions, respectively, and a lid having its opposite ends connected to said receptacle and lid, respectively, for movement of one and past a dead center position relative to the other end and to said hinge in either direction of movement of said lid, said lid having a tab projecting from one edge thereof and forming a finger grip part for swinging the lid, and said top wall having a pair of opposed notches thereon with one of which said tab registers in each position of the lid whereby insertion of a finger beneath the tab is facilitated.

4. A combined ash receiver and cigarette holder comprising a receptacle having a fixed top wall provided with an opening, a closure hinged to the inner edge of said opening, and a spring .secured at one end to said'closure intermediate the ends thereoi and at the opposite end to said receptacle in the vertical plane of the axis of the hinge of said closure.
