(o1. 152o9 'I'his invention relates to devices for detachf ably coupling pad and pui bodies in connection therewith to form a handle or supporting member therefor in the use of the pads or other l bodies, and particularly in the supporting of scouring or cleansing pads composed of woven wire, steel wool and similar materials; and the object of the invention is to provide a holder for body members or pads of the class described having means in the form of a Ushaped clip adapted to bethreaded through a part of the pad in coupling the same with a handle member; a further object being to provide a clip or coupling means for devices of the class de- `.lll scribed, which yis arc-shaped in form so as to draw the pad in engagement with the holder in the operation of coupling the pad therewith;

a still further object being to provide a holder or handle member having a chamber or recess,

$ in the lower surface thereof, through which the U-shaped clip or the side arms thereof is adapted to pass, said arms being disposed within the boundaries of the recess in said member; a still further object being to provide means for spready2li ing the pointed ends of the arms of said clip l to aid in retaining the clip against displacement from said member; and with these and other objects in view the invention ,consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specied which 30 is simple in construction, eilicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying draw- 35 ing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which: f

50 In practice, I provide a supporting body or handle member 5 which is preferably composed of a non-metallic material, especially when used in conjunction with scouring pads, sponges and the like but which may be composed of any de- 55 sired material when used in conjunction with puffs or other applicators, which are not sub-W5 jected to moisture in thefuse thereof.

The bodyy 5 is in theform of adisk having `a recess 5 inthe lower surface thereof to form a peripheral downwardly extending flange l, and` V5 centrally of the upper end of the body 5 is ai'- knob or other finger piece 8 facilitating the ygrasping of the device, by the hand, in the use thereof.

One side of the body 5A is provided with a pairr` 10 of small downwardly extending apertures 9, in"" which is adapted to be mounted a' coupling clip Ill, substantially U-shaped in form, that is to say, the clip is provided with a narrow cross head I I at its outer end and with curved arms I2 extending from the ends of .the cross head* and being flared outwardly in the direction of the free pointed ends I3 thereof, as clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

The arms I2 of the clip or coupling member 20 Illare adapted to be moved together in theirfipassage through the apertures 9, and saidarms extend across the central portion of the U-shaped recess 6 `and the pointed ends I3 are adapted to enter outwardly flared recesses I4 inthe bot- 25 tom wall of the recess 6, as clearly seen in Figsnf land 3 of the drawing. By outwardly ilaring the recesses I4, the pointed ends I3 of the arms I2 will be flexed outwardly toaid in securing the clip I Il against displacement from the body 5.

When the clip isin its innermostposition their cross head I I thereof is disposed in 'close proximity to the other surface of the bcdy, preferably at the corner portions I 5 thereof, so as not to form an objectionable projection, while at the same time facilitating the grasping thereof, in the operation of removing the clip forthe removal of a worn out pad or other element I6, and in the operation of coupling another pad therewith.

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, I 6 repre- 40 sents a pad of steel wool or similar material, whereasin Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have indicated at Ilia a pad or sponge of woven wire. In this connection, it will be understood that any, kind or class of element I G-Ia may be attached to the body 5 depending entirely upon the use to which the device is to be applied, for example, a powder puff or an ordinary sponge, rubber pad or rubber spongev and similar elements may be applied. It will also be understood, in this connection, that the size of the body 5 may be varied and modied to suit the different uses.

In coupling the element with the body 5, the same is simply placed over the recess 6 and pressed 55 into this recess by the hand and the clip l0 is moved from the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the full line position, in which operation the curved arms l2 will pass into and through that part of the body of the element arranged in the recess, and will have a tendency to draw this material inwardly into the recess to firmly retain the element against displacement from the body 5.

Upon consideration of Fig. l of the drawing, it will be understood that the arms l2 are arranged within the boundaries of the recess E or, in other words, inwardly of the lower edge of the flange 'l so that these arms will not Contact a surface over which the device is moved should the element become worn sufficiently to expose said arms.

In using the device in connection with steel wool, it will be apparent that after a pad orsponge of this material of a premanufactured form has become worn to some degree, the same may be temporarily detached and folded orpiled together in a smaller body rand then recoupled with the holder, in this way no `real waste will be experienced.

By employing a holder or handle member of the class described with a simple and economical form of clip or coupling member, a very practical and useful means is provided for utilizing various kinds of cleansing sponges or pads as well asapplicators. It will also be apparent that the clip extends through a relatively Wide or large area of the pad or other element, and this will serve to` support the element I6 in close proximity to the lower edge of the flange 1, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

I-lavingy fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:- Y

1. A handle member or mounting for cleaning `:pads and similarelements, saidmember c'omprising a large circular disc having a reduced knob or finger piece centrally of its upper surface, said disc having a large shallowrecess in the lower surface thereof, a clip comprising a U-shaped member consisting of a crosshead and elongated curved side arms, the curvature of said f side arms being convex with respect to the bottom wall of said recess, and said arms being slidably lsupported in an edge of said disc and adapted to'move transversely of said recess to engage a cleaning pad arranged in said recess and to retain said pad against displacement from said disc.

2. A handle member or mounting for cleaning pads and similar elements, said member comprising a large circular disc having a reduced knob or finger piece centrally of the upper surface, said disc having a large shallow recess in the lower surface thereof, a clip comprising a U-shaped 5 member consisting of a crosshead and elongated curved side arms, the curvature of said side arms being convex With respect to the bottom wall of said recess, said arms being slidably supported in an edge of said disc and adapted to move transversely of said recess to engage a cleaning pad arranged in said recess and to retain said pad against displacement from said disc, said arms flaring outwardly with respect to said crosshead, and the free ends thereof being pointed.

3. A handle member or mounting for cleaning pads and similar elements, said member comprising a large circular disc having a reduced knob or iinger piece centrally of its upper surface, said disc having a large shallow recess in the lower surface thereof, a clip comprising a U-shaped member consisting of a crosshead and Aelongated curved side arms, the curvature of said side arms being convex with respect to the bottom wall of said recess, said arms being slldably supported in Q25 an edge of said disc and adapted to move transversely of s aid recess to engage a cleaning pad arranged in said recess and to retain said pad against displacement from said disc, and said disc having sockets receiving the free ends of saidiSO arms when the said arms are in pad retaining position.

4. A handle member or mounting for cleaning pads and similar elements, said member compris- Y ing a large circular disc having a reduced'knobi-B or nger piece centrally of its upper surface, said disc having a large shallow recess in the lower surface thereof, a clip comprising a U-shaped member consisting of a crosshead and elongated curved side arms, the curvature of said side armsio being convex with respect to the bottom wall of said recess, said arms being slidably supported in an edge of said disc and adapted to move transversely of said recess to engage a cleaning pad arranged in said recess and to retain said padi against displacement from said disc, said disc having sockets receiving the free ends of said arms when the said arms are in pad retaining position, and said sockets being in diverging relationship to each other so as to spread the ends of the arms's0 in entering said sockets.
