My invention relates to folding paper boxes. It relates more in particular to a folding paper box of generally spear or arrow shape, having various uses, functions, advantages and features as will be described.
The principal object of my invention is the provision of a spear or arrow shaped box adapted to' be formed from a single blank of material.
Another object is the provision of a paper or board blank adapted to be folded into a spear or arrow shaped box having a generally triangular shaped head portion and a generally rectangular shaped shaft portion.
Another object is the provision of a spear or arrow shaped box adapted to form a receptacle for a variety of articles, but preferably single articles such as candy bars, perfume bottles, gum sticks and the like.
The general features of my invention are clear from the following description taken with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective View showing the box in assembled condition as it appears when the blank shown in Fig. 2 is employed;

Fig. 3 shows a modified form of box;
Fig. 4 shows a blank from which the box illustrated in Fig. 3 may be formed;
Fig. 5 shows another modified form of box blank; and
Figs. 6 and 'l show the box of my invention assembled in an outer display container.
According to the main features of some of the embodiments of my invention, I provide a blank comprising top and bottom members of generally spear or arrow shape, the two members each providing a head portion of generally triangular shape and a shaft portion of generally rectangular shape, the width of the rectangular portion being less than the width ofthe base of the triangular portion so that a portion of the base projects beyond the shaft portion where the two portions meet. The sides of the top and bottom portions with the exception of the projecting portion of the base are bounded by folding lines connecting projecting portions which, when the box is folded, become the vertical side walls of the box and also comprise tucks, tongues, etc. With which the box is made rigid, with which the assembly is secured and with which access to the interior of the box is provided. One vertical wall portion of the box interconnects the two top and bottom portions. In Fig. 2, this interconnecting portion is a side wall running along one of the sides of the triangular portion of the arrow, while in Fig. 4 it is the end portion which connects the two rectangular por# tions of the arrow.
Referring now first to Fig. 2, I provide a blank 5 comprising a bottom portion 31 and a top portion 36, each having a triangularly shaped head portion and a rectangularly shaped shaft portion. A side member 38 interconnects the portions 3'1 and 36, folding lines A and B being pro- 10 vided along the boundaries thereof. The bottom portion or member 31 has another rectangular projecting side portion 39 corresponding in shape and position to the portion 38 and oppositely facing rectangular projecting side por- 15 tions 42 and 4I. These members are connected to the bottom portion or member 37 at folding lines D, E and F. Tucks 49 and 5| are connected respectively to members 4l and 42.
The top member 36 is provid-ed with overlap- 20 ping ap or side members 43, 46 and 44 provided with locking tongues 53, 56 and 54, respectively. The locking tongues 53, 56 and 54 are adapted to extend into locking slots 5l, 59 and 58, respectively, provided alon-g the periphery of the bot- 25 tom member 3l and coinciding with folding lines D, F, and E, respectively. Folding lines I, K and J are provided between the overlapping flap or side members 43, 46 and 44, respectively, and the top member and folding' lines L, N and M are 30 provided between these members and their respective locking tongues 53, 56 and 54. The side member 38 is provided with a small punch hole 6I through which a string or otherv fastening means may be extended as shown in Fig. 1. An 35 Iend member 41 is connected to the top portion 36 at folding line G and a tuck 52 projects beyond the end member, a folding line H being provided between the end member 4l and the tuck 52. 40
The blank shown in Fig. 2 and described hereinabove is foldable to produce an assembled and completed box as shown in Fig. 1 by folding the same along the several folding lines identiegl and which preferably comprise scores formed by 45 applying pressure to the relatively stiff paper stock from which the blank is preferably made. The preferred manner of folding the blank is as follows:
The blank is folded preliminarily along fold- 50 ing lines D, E, and F, and I, J, and K. Next the blank is folded along folding lines A and B so that the top and bottom members are parallel to each other and the members 38, 39, 4I and 42 comprise the side walls of the box with the 55 members 43, 44 and 46 overlapping the members 39, 4l and 42, respectively. The locking tongues 53, 54 and 56 are now inserted through the slots 51, 58 and 59, respectively, and the entire box is assembled with the exception of the end portion. The article to be housed in the box is now inserted, the tucks 49 and 5I are folded intol position, the blank is folded on the folding lines G and H, the tuck 52 inserted between the end shaft portion of the member 31 and the article housed in the box. Preferably the article contained in the box is of such a size and shape as to t smoothly but not too tightly within the box and so the tuck 52 adequately holds the container closed. This is particularly the case where merchandise is to be displayed, for example, a bottle, in which case the box usually would be set on end.
The box formed from the blank of Fig. 2 is described as a full folding box so assembled that no glue or adhesive of any kind is required. It will be understood that there may be occasion where it is desirable to use an adhesive and in this case there is no objection to assembling the box except for the end portion in this manner. When an adhesive is employed, it will not be strictly necessary to provide the locking tongues 53, 54 and 56, and furthermore, the locking slots 51, 58 and 59 can also be omitted. However, the blank formed in the exact manner illustrated in Fig. 2 may be assembled by the use of adhesives, if desired.
In the form of the boX shown in Fig. 4, the connection between the top and bottom members is at the end of the shaft portion thereof. In this case, I provide top and bottom members 69 and 62, respectively, having an end member 63 disposed between them. The bottom member 62 is provided with four side members 64, 65, 66 and 61. The top-member 60 has overlapping flap or side members 68, 69, 1| and 12 to which are secured locking tongues 13, 14, 15 and 16, respectively. These locking tongues are adapted to engage in locking slots 11, 18, 19, and 8l, respectively. An opening 82 is provided in the top member 60, and the shaft portion of the top member may be provided 'with perforations 83 so that the box may be broken along the line of the perforations and the resulting tabs folded back for the purpose of displaying the merchandise. Both the perforations and an opening such as 82 may be provided in a single blank, or one alone may be provided as desired, or, alternatively, both may be omitted.
In describing the blank shown in Fig. 4, it appears unnecessary to refer in detail to all of the folding lines which are shown dotted in the drawing. If the blank be folded along all of the dotted lines and the locking tongues inserted within thev locking slots, a structure is produced in accordance with Fig. 3. Obviously, the contents of the box cannot be removed through the end thereof, but considerable latitude is afforded in opening either one side of the box, the two sides forming the sides of the triangular head portion, or, for
v that matter, the entire box may be disassembled readily to remove the contents.
Fig. 5 represents another embodiment of my invention. In this case, my-box blank comprises top and bottom rectangular members 85 and- 86, respectively. The bottom member 86 is provided with two side members 81 and 88 and attached to top member 85 is an overlapping flap or side member 89 which is coated with suitable adhesive material. Folding lines R, S, T and V are provided respectively between members 86 and 83,
81 and 86, 81 and 85, and 85 and 89. The bottom member 86 is provided with a triangularly shaped head portion 9| which, in turn, is provided along one side with a side member 92. Lying along the side 0f the side member 92 is a generally spearshaped portion 93, the shaft portion of which is relatively short. The portion 93 is provided with a side member 94, there being a locking slot 95 on the folding line W between the portion 93 and side member 94. The triangularly shaped head portion 9| is provided on its opposite side with an overlapping flap or side member 96 and a locking tongue 91 is attached to the member 96. Fold lines P, X, Y and Z are provided as shown in Fig 5. This blank may readily be assembled into box form and requires only one gluing operation and one folding operation, The manner of assembly is believed apparent without additional explanation. While, as described, this box has no bottom portion so as to form a complete enclosure, such may readily be provided, if desired, by attaching a bottom member and associated tuck on either member 85 or 86.
The box of my present invention is intended primarily for decorative, design, advertising and merchandising purposes. The design, of course, may be provided in the form of a two-piece setup box but there are advantages in the use of the folding type of box readily understood by those skilled in the art.
While the box may be made from any suitable foldable paper sheet or board, due to its design character, I prefer to utilize striking colors, combinations of colors and materials to have the effect desired in any particular case. For example, I may employ metallic board, paper board covered with aluminum or tin foil, paper board covered with colored cellophane and the like. The uses of the box are very great in merchandising and advertising schemes which may be built around it. I show very simply in Figs. 6 and 7 two attractive displays which may be utilized with the style of box described herein. The box may be employed as a Christmas tree ornament, as a decoration, as a box or container for party favors, for display purposes, trade Stimulators, and the like, in the industries and trades in which novelty styles of merchandise and advertising, and -the like, are employed. The box may be employed for confections, candy bars, for ilat or round sticks, for nut bars, for gum sticks, or packages of chewing gum, for novelty knick-knacks of various kinds, and for tubes and bottles containing various materials.
I have described my invention in detail in order that those skilled in the art may practice the same. It will be understood, however, that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. My invention is accordingly not to be limited except in accordance with the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A blank adapted to be folded to form a spear or arrow shaped box, said blank having spear or arrow shaped top and bottom portions generally bounded by folding lines, a substantially rectangular portion joining the top and bottom portions and bounded at two opposite sides thereof by folding lines and adapted to form one vertical wall of the box when the blank is folded, and aplurality of extensions from the top and bottom members, each secured to only `one of vsaid members, adapted to provide the additional vertical wall portions of said box, some of said extensions including portions adapted to function as tucks and fastening means whereby to impart rigidity to the box when formed and afford ready means of opening thereof.
2. A blank as defined in claim 1 wherein said rectangular portion comprises an end Wall of the box when folded.
3. A blank as defined in claim 1 wherein said rectangular portion comprises a side wall of the box when folded.
4. A folded box of generally spear or arrow shape comprising top and bottom members of spear or arrow conformation having vertical wall portions comprising end and side walls, one vertical portion connected at two opposite sides to the top and bottom members, and the remaining vertical portions comprising foldable and overlapping extensions from the top and bottom members detachably secured to each other whereby to afford access to the inside of the box.
5. A folded paper box of generally spear or arrow shape, said box comprising top and bottom members each having a triangular head portion with sides and base, and a generally rectangular shaft portion narrower than the base of the head portion, whereby the base portion of the head extends beyond the shaft portion, vertical walls formed of foldable extensions of the top and bottom members, said extension attached by folding lines to the sides of said head portion and sides and one end of the shaft portion, said base portion where it extends beyond the shaft portion being open.
6. A spear or arrow shaped box comprising top and bottom members, side members, one of which is connected to both the top and bottom members and the others of which are connected only to one of said members, overlapping side flaps connected to the opposite of said members, locking tongues on the overlapping aps adapted to extend into locking slots intermediate the side members and the member to which they are connected, and an end member having a tuck, the end member secured to one of said top and bottom members.
7. A folding paper box of spear or arrow shape comprising top and bottom members, each having a triangular portion and a rectangular portion, a rectangular side member secured to the triangular portion of both the top and bottom member, side and end members carried by the bottom member and fastening members carried by the top member.
8. A folding paper box of spear or arrow shape comprising top and bottom members each having a triangular portion and a rectangular portion, an end member disposed between the two rectangular portions and extensions from the periphery of the top and bottom members comprising the side walls of the box and fastening means therefor.
9. A box as defined in claim 8, where the fastening means comprises locking tongues carried by one group of extensions adapted to engage in locking slots disposed between the opposite member and the extensions therefrom.
10. A spear or arrow shaped box having top and bottom members, each having a triangular portion and a rectangular portion, the base of the triangular portion projecting beyond the rectangular portion, and vertical side walls, the projecting portion of' the' base of the triangular portion being open.`
11. A box comprising a top lmember havingv a generally spear or arrow outline, a bottom member having the same peripheral voutline as that of said top member, and side walls connecting said top and bottom members to provide van enclosure for housing a commodity.
12. A box having a peripheral outline of generally spear or arrow shape and comprising like top and bottom members of generally spear or arrow shape, side members attached to said lbottom member, and overlapping aps attached -to said top member and superimposed upon and lying flatly against said side members. l 13. A box having a peripheral outline of-generally spear or arrow shape and comprising like top and bottom members of generally spear or arrow shape, side members attached to said bottom member, and overlapping flaps attached to said top member and superimposed upon and lying atly against said side members, at least one of said overlapping flaps being provided with a tongue which is adapted to fit into a slot formed on a fold line between the bottom and side members.
14. A one-piece, foldable, scored, box blank adapted to be formed into a generally spear or arrow shaped box comprising a bottom member and a like top member of rectangular formation, an end member positioned between said bottom and top members, each of said bottom and top members being provided with a like triangularly shaped portion at its end away from said end member, the bottom member being provided at opposite sides thereof with side members, slots disposed between said side members and said bottom member on the fold lines therebetween, the top member being provided at opposite sides thereof with overlapping flaps and associated tongues, the triangularly shaped portion of the bottom member having opposite side members, slots disposed between said last-mentioned side members and said last-mentioned triangularly shaped portion on the fold lines therebetween, and the triangularly shaped portion of said top member having opposite overlapping aps and associated tongues.
15. A box having a general spear or arrow shape and comprising like top and bottom rectangular members, each of which is provided at one end with a like portion in the shape of an isosceles triangle, at least part of the base of which forms one side of each of said rectangular top and bottom members, and side members connecting said top and bottom members to provide an enclosure for a suitable commodity or article.
16. A foldable box blank adapted to be formed into a generally spear or arrow shaped box comprising like top and bottom members, each of which is provided at one end with a like portion in the shape of an isosceles triangle, at least a part of the base of which forms one side of each of said rectangular top and bottom members, an end member interconnecting said top and bottom members, said bottom member having oppositely disposed side members, and said top member having oppositely disposed overlapping flaps and associated tongues.
17. A one-piece, scored box blank adapted to be formed into a generally spear or arrow shaped box comprising rectangular top and bottom portions separated by an interconnecting rst side member, the bottom member being provided with a second side member and the top member being provided With an overlapping flap adapted to overlie said last-mentioned side member when the box blank is in set-up or folded shape, a rst triangularly shaped portion, the `base of which in part at least forms one side of said rectangular bottom portion, a third side member attached along one side of said first triangularly shaped portion, a second generally triangularly shaped portion connected to the other side of said third side member and having an associated side member, and an overlapping flap and contiguous locking tongue attached along the other side of said first triangularly shaped portion.
18. A one-piece, scored box blank adapted to be formed into a generally 'spear or arrow shaped box comprising rectangular top and bottom portions separated by an interconnecting first side member, the bottom member being provided with a second side member and the topmember being provided with an overlapping flap adapted to overlie said last-mentioned side member When the box blank is in set up or folded shape, and two generally triangularly shaped portions provided With side Wall members and overlapping extensions whereby to form an enclosure, a part of the base of only one of said triangularly shaped portions forming one side of said rectangular bottom portion.
