Claims.
This invention relates to a door lock and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, a device of the class referred to which may be used as a mortise lock or a` rim 5 lock within the door or mounted on its surface.
A further object of the inventionv is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door lock including a normally active spring controlled latching member and a spring controlled latchk ing member releasing device shiftable in an outward directionv inA a path at the right to the path of the latching member for releasing the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door lock including a normally active latch member and means slidably engageable with said member and pushed inl an outward direction from the inside of theI door or pulled from the outside of the door for releasing said member, with. only one movement and-without any twist or turn.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door lock. including a normally active latching member and oppositely slidable releasing means for and engageable with said member whereby in an emergency, as in case of fire, etc. the door is capable of being opened with ease.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door lock including a normally active latching member operated to released position by a sliding element and a normally inactive key operated locking member, and with said members having coacting means to prevent the latching member being 35` shifted to released position when the locking member is in locking position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to which is simple in its con- 40. struction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily installed with respect to a door and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and are as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understoood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention. as claimed.

The lock includes a housing or casing I formed of a horizontal top wall: 2., a horizontal bottom wall 3, a vertical front wall li, a vertical rear wall 5fand a vertical inner endwall G. The housing I- is open at itsouter end. The Walls 2, 3, 5 and 6 are integralv with each other. The wall d is positioned against the edges of and is suitably connected with the walls 2, 3, 5 and 6. The height of the-walls 4', 5 is materially greater than the width of the other of. said walls.
Positioned against the open end of housing I is a combined closure and guide plate l' which corresponds in width. to that of the housing I and is of a length to extend above the wall' 2 and to depend from the Wal1.3'. The plate 'I, as shown, acts as a closure for the open end of and also as a means for retaining housing I in pocket S' formed` in a door 9. The extended end terminal portions of plate 'I are to be mortised in the outer side edge of the door il` and are to be secured to the latter by the holdfast devices, not shown, which are to be extended through the countersunk openings Iformed in the plate. The latter also functions as a combined support and guide common to a latching member II and a locking bolt or member I2, to be referred to and for such purpose plate l is formed with an upper guide opening I3: for the passage of member II and a lower guidev opening I4 for bolt I2.
The walls 4, 5 between the vertical median of housing I andv wall 6 are formed with aligning openings I5, I5 respectively. The openings I5, I6 are located between the longitudinal median of housing I andwall 2. The door 9 is to be providedwith a pair of aligned openings Il, I8 which align with the openings I5, I6 respectively. The door 9 has secured thereto, at opposite sides thereof, oppositely disposed bearing members I9, 20 formed with axial openings 2l, 22 respectively aligning with the openings I1, I8 respectively. Each bearing member is formed with an outwardly directed annular boss 23 having its inner face ush with the edge of the axial opening in the member. The purpose of the aligned openings I5, I6, I1, I8, 2| and 22 will be referred to.
Integral with the inner face of wall is a flat rectangular supporting lug 24 disposed in transverse relation with respect to housing I and formed at its free end with a socket 25 for the reception of a holdiast means, not shown, which is to extend through the wall 4. The length of lug 24 is such as to extend from the inner face of wall 5 to the inner face of wall 4. The lug 24 is of rectangular cross section and has its upper face disposed at the longitudinal median of housing I. The lug 24 is arranged between the vertical median and open end of housing I and constitutes a combined support and guide for latching member II.
Integral with the inner face of wall 5 is a flat rectangular supporting lug 29 disposed transversely of housing I. The lug 29 is arranged below, aligns with and is spaced from the lug 24 and constitutes a combined support and guide for the member I2. The lug 24 further functions to arrest the bodily shifting upwardly of and for retaining member I2 on lug 29. The member I2 slides between the lugs 24 and 29.
The latching member II comprises a relatively short substantially rectangular bar-like body 39 having its outer end edge beveled as at 3|. The body 39 is so constructed as to permit of its being disposed for use on either one of its lengthwise faces A or B. The side edges of body 39 are indicated at C, D. As shown body 39 is disposed on its face B. Integral with the face A of body 39 between the transverse median and outer end of the latter is a square lug 32 having its outer side face 32l ilush with the side edge D of body 39. Integral with the face B of body 36 between its transverse median and outer end of the latter is a square lug 33 having its outer side face 33a flush with the side edge C of body 39. 'I'he body 39 in its faces A, B is formed with diagonal grooves. The grooves are indicated at 34, 35 and are of like form and align with each other. The side walls of each of the grooves are indicated at 36, 31 and disposed in parallel inclined plates. The grooves 34, 35 are arranged between the transverse median and inner end of body 39. The distance between the outer ends of the grooves and the inner end of the body 30 is greater than the distance between the inner ends of the grooves and the inner end of body 39.
Secured to the inner face of wall 6, as at 33, is an upstanding forwardly directed curved leaf spring 39 which permanently bears against the inner end 39a of body 39. The spring 39 acts to normally maintain member II in latching position. The member II is moved to released or non-latching position against the action of spring 39.
The lock includes a shifting device for sliding member II from latching to non-latching position. The said device consists of a vertically disposed actuating element 40 for and disposed at right angles to member II and a horizontally disposed slidable carrier 4I for element 49. The latter is formed of a rectangular head part or upper 42 and a frusto-tapered lower part 43 for actuating the member II. The head part 42 is formed with an opening 44 and has each side vertically grooved as at 45, 46. The part 43 is integral with the bottom edge of part 42. The
part 43 is of less width and of less length than the width and length of the part 42.
The carrier 4I consists of a shaft 41 having a cylindrical intermediate portion 48, and a pair of reduced squared end portions 49, 59. The portion 48 slidably extends through the aligned openings I5, I6, I1, I8, 22, 23 and also through opening 44 of head part 42 of element 49. The latter is xedly secured to shaft portion 48 centrally of the latter. The reduced end portions 49, 59 provide shaft 41 with a pair of peripheral shoulders 5I, 52 against which abutment discs 53, 54 respectively are positioned. Secured upon the reduced end portions 49, 59 of shaft 41 are inner and outer socketed knobs 55, 56 respectively which clamp the discs 53, 54 against the shoulders 5I, 52.
Engaging in one of the grooves 45, 46, as shown, the groove 45, is the rear free end of a flat controlling spring 51 for the slidable carrier. The forward end of spring 51 is anchored against a spacing collar 58 which is fixedly secured against the inner face of wall 5 by the holdfast means 59.
The lower part 43 of element 49 has its sides oppositely beveled as at 69, 6I. One of said sides is for the purpose of riding against the wall 31 of one of the grooves 34 and with the inclination of such side being the same as that of the Wall 31. As shown the side 6I of part 43 is positioned against the wall 31 of groove 34. The construction of the element 49 and member I I permits of reversing them when desired. 'I'he disc 54 abuts one of the bosses 23 when the carrier is in inactive position and the disc 53 is to abut the other boss 2S when the carrier is shifted to active position. The normal position of the carrier is as shown in Figure 2 and is maintained in such position by the spring 51. The carrier is moved to active position against the action of spring 51. The normal position of the element 49 is as shown in Figure 2 with a beveled side of part 43 positioned against the end portion of a side Wall of a groove in member II. By pushing the carrier outwardly from the inner side of the door the head element 49 will act on the member II and move it from latching to non-latching position. By pulling the carrier outwardly, the head element 49 will also provide for the shifting of member I I to non-latching position. The slidable coaction of a beveled side of the actuating element 49 with the rear wall of a groove in the member II, as the carrier is slid or pulled outwardly provides for the action as aforesaid.
The locking member I2 comprises a rectangular bar 62 disposed on its lower lengthwise edge and formed in proximity to its rear end with an enlarged groove 63 opening at the lower edge thereof. The groove 63 has a pair of straight side walls 64 and an arcuate top wall 65. Arranged in the groove 63 is a cam 66 formed eccentrically of its sides with stub shafts 61, 68 which are journaled in openings 69, 19 formed in the walls 4, 5 respectively. The cam 66 eccentrically thereof is formed with a socket 1I ln the form of a die simulating a letter of the alphabet, or a number; as shown it is a letter.
The walls 4, 5 are provided with openings, not shown for the insertion of a key, not shown, formed to conform to the contour of the socket to enter the latter for the purpose of rotating the cam in a direction to shift member I2 from the position shown in Figure '7 to locking position as shown in Figure l.
The member I2 intermediate its ends and on its upper face has formed integral therewith a square lug 'I2 which functions respectively for limiting the extent of the shifting of member I2 to non-locking position; to arrest the moving of member II to non-locking position when the member I2 is in locking position; and for limiting the extent of the shifting of member II to non-latching position when member I2 is in non-locking position. 'Ihe lug 'I2 has its outer side face 'I3 ush with the side edge 'I4 of member I2. The lug 'I2 coacts with lug 24 for limiting the moving of member I2 to non-locking position. The lug 'I2 is arranged against lug 24 when member I2 is non-active. The lug 'I2 is arranged in the path of lug 32 or 33 depending upon the disposing of member II on its face A or B.
The member II is shifted to non-latching posi- I tion for the purpose of unlatching the door when member I2 is in the position shown in Figure '7.
Any suitable form of keeper may be employed for the members II, I2, when they are in latching and locking position respectively.
What I claim is:
1. In a lock, a horizontally disposed spring controlled normally active slidably mounted latching member formed in its top face with a groove disposed diagonally thereof, a slidable vertically disposed actuating element for said member formed of an apertured upper part having a side groove and lower part depending from the lower end of the upper part, and having an inclined side face for riding against a side wall of said diagonal groove to shift said member to inactive position, a controlling spring for said element, said spring being fixed at one end and having its other end positioned in the groove of said upper part, and a horizontally disposed slidably mounted push and pull carrier disposed at right angles to said member, said carrier extending through the aperture in said element being fixed, intermediate its ends to said upper part for bodily carrying said element on the push and pull movement of the carrier.
2. In a lock, a horizontally disposed spring controlled normally active slidably mounted latching member having its upper and lower faces each formed with a groove disposed diagonally thereof between its vertical median and rear end, said grooves being aligned and extending in the same direction, a slidable vertically disposed actuating element for said member formed of a vertically disposed apertured upper part provided at each sidewith a groove and a frusto-tapered lower part depending from the lower end of and of less width than said upper part, said lower part having its sides selectable for riding against a side wall of a selected diagonal groove to shift said member to inactive position, a controlling spring for said element, said spring being fixed at one end and having its other end positioned in a selective groove of said upper part, and a horizontally disposed slidably mounted push and pull carrier extending at right angles to said member, said carrier extending through the aperture in and being fixed, intermediate its ends, to said upper part for bodily carrying said element on the push and pull movement of the carrier.
3. In a lock, a horizontally disposed spring controlled normally active slidably mounted latching member having its upper and lower faces each formed with a groove disposed diagonally thereof between its vertical median and rear end, said grooves being aligned and extending in the same direction, a slidable vertically disposed actuating element for said member formed of a vertically disposed apertured upper part provided at each side with a groove and a frusto-tapered lower part depending from the lower end of and of less width than said upper part, said lower part having its sides selectable for riding against a side wall of a selected diagonal groove to shift said member to inactive position, a controlling spring for said element, said spring being xed at one end and having its other end positioned in a selective groove of said upper part, and a horizontally disposed slidably mounted push and pull carrier extending at right angles to said member, said carrier extending through the aperture in and being fixed, intermediate its ends, to said upper part for bodily carrying said element on the push and pull movement of the carrier, supporting means common to said member, spring and carrier and having a part thereof providing an abutment, and said member being formed on its upper and lower faces with lugs between its vertical median and forward end for selective engagement with said abutment.
4. In a lock, a horizontally disposed spring controlled normally active slidably mounted latching member having its upper and lower faces each formed with a groove disposed diagonally thereof between its vertical median and rear end, said grooves being aligned and extending in the same direction, a slidable vertically disposed actuating element for said member formed of a vertically disposed apertured upper part provided at each side with a groove and a frusto-tapered lower part depending from the lower end of and of less width than said upper part, said lower part having its sides selectable for riding against a side wall of a selected diagonal groove to shift said member to inactive position, a controlling spring for said element, said spring being fixed at one end and having its other positioned in a selective groove of said upper part, and a horizontally disposed slidably mounted push and pull carrier extending at right angles to said member, said carrier extending through the aperture in and being fixed, intermediate its ends, to said upper part for bodily carrying said element on the push and pull movement of the carrier, supporting means common to said spring carrier and member, and a vertically disposed controlling spring for said member having its lower end fixed to said means and its upper end of curved contour permanently bearing against the inner end of said member.
5. A mechanism as set forth in claim 1 having combined therewith a supporting means common to said member, spring and carrier, and a vertically disposed controlling spring xed at its lower end to said means, and having its upper end portion of curved contour permanently bearing against the inner end of said member.
