This movement is accomplished by pivoting this diverter plate to the casing through one or more brackets 30 attached to the diverter. This pivot may conveniently be the same as the pivot [4 around which the housing moves, the housing 12 and diverter 29 being concentrically pivoted at a point forwardly of the feed mechanism. Threading of the strips into position in the feed mechanism is thus facilitated.
By arranging the guide plate 29 in the manner described, it will be seen that it lies in a position beneath the housing I2 so that access to it cannot be had except upon movement of the housing. The housing, moreover,'is so arranged that when in its lowered position, it prevents all access to the record strip at and beyond the feeding mechanism, insuring that the strip shall enter the record compartment and preventing its removal from the compartment in an unauthorized manner.
Moreover, the housing is also preferably so arranged as to prevent the removal of the tablet 4. This may readily be accomplished by placing one of the retaining screws of the tablet 4 beneath some portion of the housing. The cover 25 of the record compartment is shaped to provide one or more shoulders 3| positioned to engage the seats 32 in the side arms l3 of the housing 52 to prevent the lifting of the housing while the cover is closed.
This register, in the form just described, is intended for use with record strips S having forms 33 printed thereon, and feed control apertures 8 in registry with the forms. The feed is controlled and the registry of a form on one strip with the corresponding forms on the other strips is maintained by cooperation of the disc II, the roll it and the control apertures referred to, in a manner well known in the art, and described in the Johnston Patent No. 1,658,127, issued February 7, 1928.
For the purpose, moreover, of refolding the lower record sheet S within the locked compartment 24, a selecting disk 34, as shown in the Johnston patent mentioned, may also be mounted upon the shaft 20 carrying a finger 35 which is pressed upwardly by a spring 36, but depressed by a cam 31, as the finger during the rotation of the disk is brought up to the position opposite the record strips. An auxiliary line of fold controlling apertures 9, for folding cooperation with the folding finger 35, is provided in the record strip, these apertures appearing in each alternate record sheet of the strip in registry with the form thereon.
In threading the machine, the record strips are carried out of the end of the casing and over the writing tablet 4, the appropriate carbons being interleave-d between them. The cover 25 of the rec ord compartment may now be thrown back by releasing the catches 2'! and the housing l2 may be raised by releasing the catches I8. Thereupon the guide plate 29 may be lifted and the end of the lower record strip directed beneath it. The guide plate 29 may then be turned back into its horizontal position and the remaining record strips inserted over it. The housing I2 may now be lowered and latched and then the cover 25 of the record compartment may be closed and locked, and the margin frame fastened in place. The forward wall of the housing l2 overlies the diverter plate 29 when closed, so as to engage with and prevent movement of said plate from its normal operative position of Fig. 1, into its strip threading position shown in Fig. 2, and the cover 25 may also engage the diverter as shown to hold the latter in its operative position.
With the machine arranged as above described, the turning of the handle 2| will feed the record strips together the length of one record form. The upper strips will be fed out of the machine in position to be grasped by the hand, while the lower sheet will be diverted into the locked compartment 24 and refolded there in zigzag form.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawing, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An autographic register including, in combination, record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll, a roll carrier pivotally mounted so as to carry said roll to and from strip feeding position, and a strip diverter separate from the roll carrier and pivotally mounted substantially coincidentally with said roll carrier.
2. An autographic register including, in combination, record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll, a roll carrier pivoted on an axis disposed forwardly of the feeding mechanism and substantially parallel to the axis of said feed roll, and a strip diverter separate from the roll carrier and pivoted on an axis substantially coincident with the pivotal axis of said roll carrier.
3. An autographic register including, in combination, record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll, a roll carrier pivotally mounted so as to carry said roll to and from strip feeding position, and a strip diverter separate from the roll carrier and pivotally mounted substantially coincidentally with said roll carrier, and means cooperating with said diverter for retaining the latter in its operative strip diverting position.
4. An autographic register including, in combination, record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll, a roll carrier pivoted on an axis disposed forwardly of the feeding mechanism and substantially parallel to the axis of said feed roll, a strip diverter separate from the roll carrier and pivoted on an axis substantially coincident with the pivotal axis of said roll carrier, and a retaining device positioned for engagement with said diverter for retaining the latter in its operative strip diverting position.
5. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll pivoted to swing about an axis disposed forwardly of the roll and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said roll, a strip diverter mounted for movement away from normal operative position into position to facilitate insertion of a record strip beneath it, retaining means for holding the feed roll in operative feeding position, and a cover for a compartment of the machine engageable with said diverter when the cover is in closed position for holding said diverter in its operative strip diverting position.

In a machine of the character described, in combination, a record strip feeding mechanism including a feed roll pivoted to swing about an axis disposed forwardly of the roll and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said roll, a strip diverter pivotally mounted on an axis disposed forwardly of the roll, retaining means for holding the feed. roll in operative feeding position, a record compartment for receiving strips con.- trolled by said diverter and a cover for said compartment engaging said diverter to retain it in its operative position.
