Description

DISPLAY vlcs AAND FOLDER Filed Dec. 21. 195e """llllllulllH Patented July 12, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,123,610 n DISPLAY DEVICE AND FOLDER Leroy P. Neher, St. Louis, Mo.
Application December 2l, 1936, Serial No. 116,854 claims. (o1. 40-4) The present invention relates to display devices and is particularly related to advertising media for use upon tapered neck bottles, such as milk bottles.
Display devices of this general type have heretofore been produced;` but they have always had the drawback that the advertising space available was necessarily limited, since, to be most satisfactory and practical, the bottle collar must t within the limitsof the tapered neck of the bottle. Ordinarily, bottles of this type have flanges around the upper edges and it is essential that the bottle collar be so formed as to slip over the neck and rest upon the shoulder of the bottle. In order readily to pass over the flanges, the collars are ordinarily made with a large upper diameter which again reduces their width.
The present invention is designed to overcome this difficulty of restricted advertising space, while retaining all of the advantages above noted of the usual bottle collar. It attains additional advertising space without exceeding the size limits of the bottle as above noted, and, indeed, in its preferred form, does not exceed the size limits oi the ordinary `bottle collar.
This last objective is obtained specifically by having the bottle collar folded, the design being such that the folded portion will overlie the basic bottle collar and will be adapted to be opened by removing the collar after the bottle has reached the consumer.
lt is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a bottle collar having a supplemental section adapted to be folded over the main bottle collar section.
It is a further object of the invention to design this section so that when in overlapping position it will be retained snugly against the bottle collar so as not to be injured during handling, packing, and the like, of the bottle.
It isa further object of the invention to provide such a folded bottle collar having a lower diameter approximately equal to that of the shoulder of the bottle and an upper periphery of such size as to pass over the flange of the bottle.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a bottle collar of this type having an upper edge straight in at least part of its extent, to which straight portion is attached the supplemental folder or folded section, the latter being adapted to be folded about this straight edge and this edge providing a sloping top to the bottle collar whereby it may pass over the flange of the bottle, but yet seat snugly about the bottle neck.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description, taken in conjunction with the Vaccompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a developed view of the bottle collar showing the shape it takes when cut out of a flat sheet of material.
Fig. 2 shows the collar folded and on a bottle.
Fig. 3 is adeveloped View of a modified form of bottle collar with folder.
Fig. 4 is a view of the same collar on a bottle.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the device generally indicated at Ill may be cut out of a suitable flexible material such as paper. It comprises a main or collar section II and a supplemental or folder section I2. The collar section II is provided with a lower arcuate edge I3 and an upper straight edge III. Along this upper straight edge I4 supplemental section I2 is attached.
The main bottle collar I I provides an elongated section, at one end of which there is formed a tongue I5, and at the other end is provided a slot I6 having an angular extension Il thereon.
4The supplemental section I2 is here shown as semicircular, its radius being desirably substantially equal to the maximum width of the section II. A middle portion I8 of the edge I 4 constitutes the junction line between sections'l I and VI2 and also provides a fold line along which the section I2 may be folded so as to overlie the section iI, as shown in Fig. 2.
The sections may be provided with suitable advertising matter, as is shown. Ordinarily, the back face of the section I2 when folded down, as shown in'Fig. 2, may carry main advertising. The inside face shown in Fig. 1 may carry the more extended information rthat requires careful attention.
In using the device, the supplemental section I 2 is i'lrstfolded down on the line I8 to overlap the main collar. 'I'he tongue I5 is then engaged through the slot I6, this operation being facilitated by the presence of the extension slot I1 that also provides a certain pivotal action for a purpose to be described. Thecollar will then be in the familiar shape of the section of a cone, the lower edge lying in a plane. The device may then be slipped over the bottle with the lower edge I3 resting smoothly about the shoulder of the bottle, as is shown in Fig. 2. The upper edge being straight, will not lie precisely in a plane. It will, however, slope relative to the lower edge and it will have a periphery at least as large as the flange F on the bottle, but will nevertheless snugly seat on the bottle neck below the flange. Hence, it may be dropped over this ange conveniently.
In addition, the fact that the supplemental section is caused to arch around the bottle provides that this section will adhere snugly to the main bottle collar. It does not flare outwardly and., indeed, resists the effort to draw it outwardly. Consequently, it will notbe damaged in packing, icing, or the like, of the bottle. It wi1l,.of course,
be understood that, where desired, the supplemental section I2 may be folded to the inside of the collar. In this preferred form, it also will be observed that the supplemental section is wholly contained within the limits of the whole bottle collar.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, there is shown a bottle collar 2|] having a main section 2l and a supplemental section or folder 22. In this case, the lower edge of the collar has a straight portion 23 and arcuate portions 24 and 25. -The upper edge 26 is straight and along the portion 21 thereof the supplemental section 22 is joined to the main section, the line 21 constituting a fold line. This collar is provided at one end of the section 2| with a tongue 28 and at the other end with a V-slot 29 similar to those in the first modification. The upper edge 3D of the section 22 is made to conform to that part of the lower edge that it overlaps.
In use, the section 22 is folded along the line 21 to overlie the section 20. The tongue 28 is then engaged in the slot 29, whereupon the device forms itself into a portion of a cone. It will be seen that the arcuate portion 25 of the lower edge rests approximately on the shoulder of the bottle; whereas the straight portion 23 extends upwardly. The portion 25 preferably is given sufficient length to support the collar securely on the shoulder. The functioning of this device and the manner of containing the advertising may be similar to that of the rst modification. This form, however, provides somewhat more advertising space. As in the first modification, the upper edge is so shaped as to pass over the flange F of the bottle and yet to permit the device to rest snugly about the tapered neck thereof.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that this invention has provided a bottle collar that attains all the compactness of the ordinary type of such collar, together with its convenient fitting over the bottle; but yet has additionally provided supplemental advertising space. 'Ihe device also adheres closely to the bottle neck, so as to minimize possibility of damage. The first modification has an attractive form that quickly catches the eye and suggests the possibility of removing the tab for the information contained thereunder. The second modification attains additional advertising space and involves less loss of paper, since, in laying out bottle collars of this type on a large sheet, one 'can be formed on the top of the previous one. In the claims to ensue, where the term folder is used, it is to be understood that the same is employed in its generic sense, involving one or more sheets of any desired shape.
