This invention relates to improvements in boring apparatus and has particular reference to an under reamer.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a device for drilling holes through any surface and to then under-cut or enlarge the bottom of the hole for any desired purpose, such as for sealing in or cementing the bottom of the well.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is sturdy in construction, yet one which will enter the ordinary drilled well, and one which will operate in an efficient manner.
A further object is to produce a device of this character wherein adjustments may be readily made so as to vary the amount of the under-cut.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. l is a side elevation of my tool, with the under-cutting fingers in retracted position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed View, showing portions thereof in cross section;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In drilling wells, particularly deep wells, it is often necessary to under-cut the well at certain portions of its depth so as to place cement in the under-cut portion.
I have, therefore, devised a tool which will accomplish this work of under-cutting in a most eificient manner.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be noted that my tool consists of sections 5, 6, l, and 8, forming a body member, which sections are connected by rings 9. To the upper section 5 is connected a head II; and to the lower section 8 is connected a foot piece l2. Extending through the head H, sections 5, 6, l, and 8, and foot piece I2 is a rod l3, which has a threaded upper end l4, upon which is positioned a buffer l6, which is held in position by lock nuts I! and 18. This buffer at certain times is adapted to come to rest against the top of the head II. The relative movement is designated by the arrows at A in Fig. 1. Secured to the upper end of the rod I3 is a supporting yoke l9, having an eye 2|, to which the cable 22 is attached. This yoke also supports pipes 23 and 24. The pipe 23 is connected to a bore 26, passing downwardly through the rod 13. Within the sections 5, 6, I, and 8 and mounted upon the rod l3 are a spring 25 and a fitting 21, the spring 25 bearing against the upper end of 5 the section 5 and also against a nut 28 mounted upon the rod 13. The nut 28 and the fitting 21 are threadedly carried on the rod l3 and through this threaded adjustment, may be moved up and down thereon. The fitting 2'! has a plurality of 10 fingers 29 pivoted thereto. These fingers may be secured in any desired manner. Attached to the lower end of the foot piece is a boring head 3|, having passages 32 therethrough, which passages communicate with the bore 25, the purpose 16 of which will be later seen. A removable bit 33 is carried by the head 3|. The pipe 24 extends downwardly into the head H and has a bellshaped lower extremity, the purpose of which will be later seen. 20
With a tool constructed in accordance with the above, it will be apparent that as the tool is lowered into the well, the weight of the sections 5, 6, l, and 8, and its attached parts, will naturally cause the same to slide downwardly on the 25 rod l3, against the tension of the spring 25, thus drawing the fingers 29 from the dotted line position of Fig. 1 to the full line position of this figure. At the same time, the surface 34 of the extremity of the foot piece will be in contact with 30 the surface 36 of the head 3|. We will now assume that the tool has reached the bottom and the bit 33 is resting upon the supporting ground, the parts will still remain in the same position as they did during the lowering of the tool. By 35 now turning on fluid pressure through the pipe 23, this pressure will pass through the rod l3 and out of the passages 32. This fluid pressure will be sufiicient as it moves upwardly in the well to contact the bottom surface 31 of the foot 40 piece l2; and this upward pressure together with the expansive pressure of the spring 25 will cause the fingers 29 to tend to move outwardly into contact with the sides of the hole being bored. The pipe 24 may be termed a suction 45 pipe for withdrawing excess fluid from the well. Now, by either reciprocating the entire tool with an up and down motion, or rotating the same, under-cutting action will take place, the amount of the under-cutting being regulated by the 50 coarse adjustment of the fitting 2'! on the rod l3, or by the finer adjustment of the lock nuts I! and I8.
It will thus be apparent that my device will accomplish all the objects above set forth. 55
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I c1aim:-
1. In an under-cutting tool of the character described, a body portion, a hollow rod extending through said body portion, a head secured to said rod at a point below said body portion, openings formed through said head and communicating with the interior of said hollow rod, a bit secured to said head, an adjustable fitting carried by said rod and positioned within said body portion, fingers pivotally secured to said fitting, and spring means interposed between said fitting and the top of the interior of said body portion.
2. In an under-cutting .tool of the character described, a body portion, a hollow rod extending through said body portion, a head secured to said rod at a point below said body portion, openings formed through said head and communicating with the interior of said hollow rod, a bit secured to said head, an adjustable fitting carried by said. rod and positioned within said body portion, fingers pivotally secured to said fitting, spring means interposed between said fitting and the top of the interior of said body portion, and means for creating a flow of liquid through said rod and said head.
