METHOD FOR CLOSING CRACKS IN CASTINGS AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 23, 1936 ATTORN EYS Patented June 21, 1938 PATENT OFFICE METHOD FOR. CLOSING canons IN CAST- INGS AND THE LIKE Newell Hays, El Paso, Tex. Application November 23, 1936, Serial No. 112,390
1 Claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a method whereby, without the use of heat, cracks in a metal casting may be efiectively closed; and to provide a method for the purpose indicated which may be carried out with the expenditure of a minimum of time and which will require no particular skill on the part of the operator.
With this object in view, the invention consists of certain steps to be successively performed,
as illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the casting containing a. crack in which the first step in the method hasbeen performed.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the casting following the performance of the second step.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the casting after the performance of the third or final step.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view, on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Figure 2.
Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines 6-6 and 1-! respectively of Figure 3.
In carrying out the improved method, let the ion. 29-148) channel. The holes are then tapped, as indicated at I 4, a comparatively fine pitch of thread being preferably used.
The next step is the plugging of the holes which is accomplished by means of the insertion 5 of screws l5 which may be and preferably are in the form of blind set screws, although headed screw's may be employed in some cases which of course will call for wider spacing between adjacent screws than in the preferred plan of car- 10 rying out the method.
After the holes have been plugged with the screws, as shown in Figure 5, the outer ends are peened over or beaten down into the channel l3, so that the metal completely fills the latter, 15 as shown in Figures 3, 6 and 7, any excess metal being cleaned off with a suitable dressing tool, such as a file, emery wheel, or the like.
In this way, the crack will not only be completely closed but the repair will be hardly no- 29 ticeable, if the work is carefully done, as it may be with a minimum of skill required on the part of the operator.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is: 95
A method for closing cracks in castings and the like which comprises drilling spaced holes in the casting'in a line generally along the line of the crack, channeling the face of the casting to dispose the holes along the center line of the 30 channel, tapping said holes, inserting screws in the holes, and finally peening over the extremities of the screws to completely fill the channel with the metal thereof.
NEWELL HAYS.
