This invention relates, generally, to Jacquard looms, and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novelchange motion mechai nism for Jacquard looms.
'In Jacquard looms employing shuttle carrying frames or battens having a plurality of superimposed shuttles fcr carrying weft bobbins having threads of differing colors, such as the well known Fletcher type. of Jacquard label loom made by the Fletcher Works of Philadelphia,
and disclosed in Patent 786,237, dated Mar. 28,`
1905i, to Schaumit isnecessary to raise and lower the shuttle carrying frame or batten to accommodate the superimposed shuttles carrying the various colors to the shed of the warpy and heretofore an extremely complicated mechanism known as the Fletcher `change motion has generally been used for this purpose. Not only does this complicated mechanism get out of order frequently in use, but the same is apt to allow the shuttle carrying frame or batten to remain in its lowered position on the lay, in which position there is no take-up on the knee roll due to the factthat the design color or filling thread and not the ground color or base thread is being woven, since the ground color is carried by the lower shuttle or line of shuttles` that are below the shed when the batten is in its lowered position,` and since the take Hup mechanism controlled by the jacquard mechanism does not operate theknee roll when, the lling thread is being woven, so that in `time this lling thread piles up to suchan extent asto cause the shut- `tles to jerk the warp threads, resulting in the weaving out of the warp as is well known to those skilled vin the art,` thereby necessitating lengthy and expensivefrepairs.
The principal object ofthe present invention is'to provide a novel change Vmotion mechanism for Jacquard looms that is of `extremely simple and rugged construction, ,the same providing for the raising and loweringl ofthe shuttle carrying frame or batten as `desiredthe shuttle carrying frame or batten moving up and down along guides provided on the lay or lay batten, and being so constructed andarranged as to provide for the positive raising of the shuttle carrying frame or batten andthe holding of the same in raised position at the end of each weaving operation, `thereby insuring the weaving of the ground or base color or thread and preventing the destruction or weaving out of the warp threads.
Another object of the present invention lies in the provision of a novel 'change motion mechanismof the above character having wheel-crank operated relatively movable slides, one of said slides carrying cam means `for raising and low-A ering the shuttle carrying frame orbatten, the interconnection of said slides being such that the raising of the shuttle carrying frame or batten is positive and is dependent merely upon theop-` eration of the wheel-crank, whereas the lowering of the shuttle carrying frame orbatten isdependent upon the jacquard mechanism. Old` and well known parts of the loom construction have been omitted for the sake ofclearness in the drawings. d g i l The loom motor 3 drives agear 4 xed on a shaft 5 having a bevel gear 6 fixed thereon which latter gear meshes with a similar bevel gear 1 xed on a Vertical drive shaft 8, whereby the drive shaft 8 is' driven from motor 3. A bevel gear 9 is fixed on drive shaft 8 and drives a bevel gear I 0 having a spur gear II` secured thereto, which latter gear meshes'with a toothed wheelcrank I 2 forrotating 'thel latter. Wheel-crank I2 carries a crank pin I4 to which is pivotally connected one end of a connecting rod I5,` the other end of which is pivotally'connected to a stud I6 projecting from a driving slide or member l1 that is longitudinally movable within a guide box I8 that is fixed uponA a back plate I9 carried by the frame I of the loom. The guide box I8 is shown as having a longitudinal slot or opening 20 in its front wall to accommodate the projecting stud I6 of slide I1 and connecting rod I5. I'he slide I1 is illustrated as having a forward rectangular projecting portion 2| movable within the slot 20.
A driven member orslide 22 of substantially the same dimensions as the driving slide I1 is also longitudinally movable within the guide box I8, the same being adapted to be driven from the driving slide I1. Driven slide 22 has a lift cam. 25 secured to the top surface of the same as by dowel pins 26. Lift cam 25 lhas an inclined camming surface 21 extending upwardly from the top surface of the driven or rear slide 22 and terminating in a flat horizontal Atop surface 28 for actuating a roller 29 -on lever 30. Roller 29 is shown carried Yby one end of lever 3U which latter is pivoted as at 3| upon the loom frame and has its other end connected to a cable 32 leading over sheaves 33 for supporting the batteri 2. When roller 29 engages the top surface of driven or rear slide V22 as shown in dot-dash lines in Fig. 1, the batten 2 is in its lower position, whereas when roller` 29 engages the iiat top surface of the lift cam l25 as shown in Yfull lines in Fig. 1 the batten is vin its upper position.
In order to effect movement of the driven slide 22 toward the right in the figures, corresponding to the movement` of roller 29 upl the inclined camming surface '21 and the raising of the batten, the driven slide is provided with a forwardly projecting stud or pin 23 that is adapted to enter a slot 24 provided in the right end portion of the driving slide I1, so 'that `when the driving slide overtakes the driven slide while moving toward the right the slot 24 engaging pin 23 also serves .to positively drive slide 22 to the right to elevate the hatten.
In order to move the driven slide toward the left in the figures, a latch "3'4has' one end thereof pivoted upon a stud 36 projecting from the side of lift cam 2-5, the other end of this latch being arranged to engage against a `projection or stop 31 provided on the'top of driving slide I1. Latch 34 has an operating pin 38 projecting therefrom to be engaged by a lifting lever 39 pivoted at one end at '40 on the guide'box I8 and having its other end connected to the lower end of an upwardly extending link 4I that' has its upper end connected to a lever 42.
Just as the cards start their cycle, the proper pair of cords 49 or 50, as the case may be, are pulled by the jacquard mechanism, thereby actuating plate cam 44 so that a low point thereof moves under lever 42 as illustrated in Fig. 1, wherebyv latch 34 is lowered intoy the path of movement of projection l31 (see Fig. 2) resulting in slide I1 acting through this latch to drive the driven slide 22 `toward the left into the dotdash position of Fig. 1, the roller 29 thereby being caused to roll down the camming surface 21 of the lift cam and effecting the lowering of the batteri and the weaving of a filling color or thread, i. e. the color vgiving the desired design to the fabric. Continued reciprocation of the driving slide causes similar movement of the driven slide, the latter being driven toward the right by the coaction of slot 24 and pin 23 and toward the left by the action of latch 34, thereby alternately raising and lowering the hatten to accommodate the movements of the superimposed shuttles to the shed of the warp.
When the cards have run their cycle, the proper pair of cords 49 or 50 are pulled by the jacquard mechanism, thereby turning cam plate 44 so that a high point moves under lever 42, thereby raising lat-ch 34 and stopping the alternate raising and lowering of the batteri 2, the latter being left, however, in raised position as is desired owing to the coaction of slot 24 with pin 23 to move the driven slide 22 to its right hand limit of travel before stopping the movement of this slide, in which position the lower shuttle or line of shuttles carrying thev ground color are actuated to weave the body of the fabric.
In practice, the stroke of the wheel-crank is of such length that the period of dwell of the follower roller 29 upon the fiat top of the driven slide 22 and upon the fiat portion 28 of the lift cam issuch that the period of rest of the batten is longer than the periods of rise or lowering thereof, thereby giving the shuttles ample time to perform their function without any vpossibility of injuring the warp.
The novel change motion mechanism of this invention is especially valuable when running looms at high speed since the gearing ratio for driving the slides is such that these slides -make but one half as many reciprocations as the number of picks per minute of the machine resulting in smooth and quiet operation at high loom speed.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having now described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a Jacquard looml having a vertically reciprocable batten, change motion mechanism for causing the reciprocation of said batten, said mechanism comprising a continuously recipro- -cating slide member, a second slide member, a positive drive connection between said members for moving said second slide member in one direction from said first slide member, a disconnectable driving connection between said slide members for moving said second slide member fromsaid first slide member in the reverse direction, and motion transmitting means actuated by said second slide member for effecting the reciprocating movement of said batten.
2. Change motion mechanism as in claim 1 and in which said disconnectable driving connection comprises latch means sc constructed and arranged that when said disconnectable drive between said slide members is broken, the batten will be returned to raised position by said positive drive connection, thereby eliminating the weaving out of the warp.
3. In a Jacquard loom having jacquard mechanism and a vertically reciprocable batten, change motion mechanism for causing the reciprocation of said batten, said mechanism comprising, a continuously reciprocating driving slide member, a driven slid-e member, abutment means for interconnecting said slide members for effecting a positive drive of said driven slide member in the direction causing the raising of the batten, and separate latch means for disconnectably interconnecting said slide members to eiect the drive of said driven slide member in the direction to lower the batten, said separate means being controlled from said jacquard mechanism.
4. In a Jacquard loom having jacquard mechanism and a vertically reciprocable batten, change motion mechanism for causing the reciprocation of said batten, said mechanism comprising, a continuously reciprocating driving member, a driven member, cooperating slot and pin means for interconnecting said members for effecting a positive drive of said driven member in the direction causl ing the raising of the batten, and separable latch means for reciprocating said driving member, a
driven member having a projection arranged to be engaged by said driving member for moving the driven member in a direction to eifect the raising of the batten, said driven member having a pivoted projection arranged to be engaged by said driving member for moving the driven member in a direction to effect the lowering of the batten, and means operated from said jacquard mechanism for turning said pivoted projection out of engagement with said driving member, whereby lowering movements of the batten cease.
6. In a Jacquard loom having jacquard mechanism and a vertically reciprocable batten, change motion mechanism for causing the reciprocation of said batten, said mechanism comprising, a continuously reciprocating driving member, means for reciprocating said driving member, a driven member having a pin projection fixed thereon and arranged to be engaged by said driving member for moving the driven member in a direction to eifect the raising of the batten, said driven member having a pivoted latch projection arranged to be engaged by said driving member for moving the driven member in a direction to effect the lowering of the batten, and pawl and ratchet means operated from said jacquard mechanism for turning said pivoted latch projection out of engagement with said driving mem'- ber, whereby lowering movements of the batten cease so that the same is held in raised position.
7. In a Jacquard loom in combination, a jacquard mechanism, a vertically reciprocable batten, and change motion mechanism for reciprocating said batten, said mechanism comprising a reciprocable member, cam means provided on said member, a follower cooperating with said cam means, transmission means connecting said follower to said batten, a positive drive connection for driving said reciprocable member in a direction to cause said cam means to effect the raising of said batten, and a disconnectable drive connection controlled from said jacquard mechanism for driving said reciprocable member in the reverse direction to cause said cam means to effect th-e lowering of said batten.
8. In a Jacquard loom in combination, a jacquard mechanism, a vertically reciprocable batten, and change motion mechanism for reciprocating said batten, said mechanism comprising a reciprocable member, a lift cam provided on said member, a lever having a follower roller cooperating with said lift cam, said lever being connected to said batten for actuating the latter, driving means, a positive drive connection from said driving means for driving said reciprocable member in a direction to cause said lift cam to raise said follower roller and eifect the raising of said batten, and a disconnectable drive connection from said driving means and controlled from said jacquard mechanism for causing said lift cam to lower said follower roller and effect the lowering of said batten.
9. In a Jacquard loom, a vertically reciprocable batten, a horizontally reciprocable lift cam, a follower cooperating with said lift cam and connected to said batten for raising and lowering the same, and horizontal surface portions provided at the ends of said cam providing periods of rest of said follower and hence of said batten that are longer than the periods of motion of the same.
