1 Claim. (Cl. 3GB- 42) rI'his invention relates to shoe heels, and more carding of a heel lift and its replacement by particularly it pertains to a new and novel means another lift. whereby a shoe heel lift may be detachably asso- In order to provide for ready detachment of ciated with ash'oe heel. the heel lift from the heel, I have provided a It is one object of the invention to providea lift securing means in the form of two interen- 5 new and novel means whereby a lift may be gaging members, one of which is carried by the reacliiy removed from a shoe heel, thereby proheel and the other being carried by the lift. This viding for interchangeability of the lift of a shoe attaching means is almost identical in construcheel. tion with a separable fastener illustrated in i", A further object of the invention resides in a Patent No. 1,357 ,795 granted to me November 2, novel construction whereby the fastening or i929, and I will not, therefore, describe the same securing means of the lift is relieved of all exother than in a cursory manner and to such excessive pressure or strain under operating content as is necessary to its adaptation to the ditions. present purpose.
A Still a further object of the invention resides The attaching means consists of two inter- 15 in anew and novel method of securing an attachengaging members A and B. The member A l ing means to the lift of a shoe heel. comprises a housing I8, which is formed with a With the above and other objects in View, the flange 2E# having a cut-out portion 22. A filling nature of. which will be apparent as the descripplate 24 is placed in the bottom of the housing I8,

The housing I8, filling plate 24, and Figure 8 is an enlarged transverse sectional the cover plate 38, are each provided with spaced view of that member of the fastening means cpenings'll, preferably circular in form and the 40 which is carrie-d by the heel lift, edges of the cut out portion 28 of the guide Figure 9 is an enlarged plan view of that memplate 2, as well as the side edges of the latch ber of the fastening means which is carried by member 38, are provided respectively with notches the lift, and 23S and 56, which are preferably semi-circular Figure l0 is a distended perspective view of one in form. The several parts are so assembled that 45 member of. the fastening means. the several openings 46, and the notches 48, of
Referring to the drawing by reference charthe guide plate are in registration with each other acter, the numeral i2 designates the rear or l to provide openings C, when the latch member 30 counter portion of a shoe, the reference character is extended, as illustrated in Figure 3, it being lll, designating a shoe heel, the lift thereof being understood that at this time, the notches 50, o1' 50 ldcsignated l5. the latch member 3B, will coincide with kthe The lift l5 is of a type which is readily removnotches 48, 0f the guide P19/06 26- able from the heel and this feature of the inven- The other member B, of the fastening means tion permits of ready interchangeability of the consists of a plate 52, of. rigid or relatively stiff lifts from one heel to another or the complete dismetal and it carries two posts 54, which are 55 adapted for reception in the openings C, of the member A. These two posts are cut out as at 56, see Figure 6.
The member A, of the fastening means is mounted in the tread end of the heel I4, Within a recess 58 therein, which recess is of a depth which is greater than the thickness of the member A. This construction provides a seat or thelike 60, upon the tread .end of theheel, which seat lies in a plane beyond the outer face of the member A of the fastening means, as illustrated by the space 62, in Figure 5.
The member B, of the fastening means is carried by the lift member I6, and to secure the same tothe lift member, I provide on the outer f edge of the plate-like member 52, a plurality of very closely adjacent prongs 64. Each of these prongs is provided on its outer end with a piercing point 66, and where the prongs join ,the
main body portion of the plate, each is provided with oppositely curved portions which provide oppositely disposed locking shoulders 68, upon the side edges of each prong. In attaching the illustratedl in Figure 3.
plate 52, to the lift I6, the prongs 64 are bent at an angle to the body portionrof the plate, as illustrated in Figure 6, in such a manner that when pressure is applied to the plate 52, the
prongs; 64, and their locking shoulders 68, will be embedded in the material ofthe lift I6, which is preferably leather. The locking shoulders 6B serve rto anchor the prongs in the'material of the lift, and by providing a large numb-er of prongs, closely associated With one another, the plate is notonly rmlysecured 'to the lift I6, but the plate is held in close contact throughout itsdeiining edge with the face of the lift I6. Still another advantage resulting from this construction resides in the fact that by using the prongs in large numbers together with theV locking shoulders, I am enabled to make the prongs comparatively short or atV least short enough that they do not p-ass entirely through the heel In placing the lift upon the heel, the latch member 30 is moved toits extended position as The posts 54 of the member l?,` are then positioned in the openings 46, after which the latch member is moved to its innermost position whereupon the side edges of the latch member pass intothe cut out portions 55, of the Vposts 54, and thereby prevent Withdrawal of the posts 54, from the openings 46, and thus locking the interengaging members A and B together.` 'I'he latch member 30 has a projecting lug or member 10, which engages in an opening 'I2 in the filler plate 24, when the latch plate is'in its innermost position, and this means serves to. retain the latch plate in its holding position.
Also, means is provided lto prevent relative.
sliding or rotary movement ofthe lift'and heel, and this means preferably consists of a portion 16, of the turned over portion 40, of the flange 22, whichportion is left standing up and is inVv such a position that it passes through the ycut out portion 18, of theplate 52, and into biting engagement with the lift I6, thus preventing relative movement between the lift and the heel.
When it is desired to remove the lift from the heel, it is only necessary to insert a tool or similar article behind the member 34, of the latch plate 30, and exert a slight outward pressure thereon. This Will move thek latch plate to its extended position, whereupon the notches 50, will coincide with the notches 48, and the posts will be free to pass from they openings C.
The plate 52, is of a greater transverse dimension than is the recess in the heel in which the member A, is positioned, and thus when the lift is in position upon the heel, the plate 52, engages and bears upon the seat 60, which defines said recess, and since, as before stated, this plate is of sti or rigidvmaterial, the pressure occasioned by the weight of the` person wearingv the shoe, `is transmitted directly to the heel by the plate 52,
and the fastening means is relieved of all strain incidental to the wearing of the device.
From the foregoing, it will begapparent thaty preferred embodiment, in which it has been applied to the lift ofthe heel of a ladys'shoe. It is to be understood, however, that it may also be incorporated in lifts of larger sizes, such as are employed in connection with mens shoes or it may also be employed asa means for attaching a heel to a shoe instead of attaching a lift to a heel.
Having thus described the invention, what is` claimed, is: k
A detachable lift for shoe heels comprising in combination, a shoe heel, a lift therefor, and a two-part fastening means for said lift, one part of said fastening means being carried by the shoe heel and including a housing, a tongue projecting from said housing, the` other part of said two-part fastening Vmeans being carried by the lift and including a rigidplate having a portion thereof removed to permit of the afore-mentioned projecting tongue of the housing of the other part of the fastening means to engage the lift to prevent turning or sliding movement thereof relative to the shoe heel, studs on the plate penetrating the housing, a locking plate slidably mounted in the housing and having edgewise locking engageek ment with the studs and cooperating means carried by the plate and an element within the housing for securing the plate against accidental sliding movement.
