8 Claims.
v This invention relates to die-holders and more particularly to air cooled die-holders.
When wire is drawn through a die, a great amount of friction results. 'I'his friction is evidenced in the form of heat which must be dissipated in order to prevent damaging the die or the wire being drawn, or both. The problem of dissipating the heat generated in the wire drawing operation is magnied by the desire to use the die for relatively long periods and at high drawing speeds.
The present invention has for its object the provision of means for dissipating the heat in the die-holder with such effectiveness that the die may be used for high speed continuous wire drawing Without overheating.
The above and other objects will be apparent as the descrip-tion proceeds and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of a die-holder constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation taken on line III- III of, Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an elevation of the quickly releas- Vable means mounting the die-holder on the base.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter H refers generally to a die-holding member which is an integral casting and which is mounted by any convenient means, for example, byV a base plate 4. To assist the base plate 4 in properly supporting the member H, it is provided with a circular recess 6 in its upper surface and a circular boss I directly underneath the recess 6. The base plate 4 is usually mounted on a table support 8 with the boss 'I extending into a hole in said support. Preferably, bolts I and I2 received in a hole I4 and slot I6, respectively in opposite ends of the base plate 4, are employed to secure the base plate 4 to the support 8. By mounting the base plate 4 in this manner, it can be moved through a small arc using the bolt I0 as a center to properly align the member H with Wire block (not shown) An aperture I8 is provided in the base plate 4 at the bottom of the recess 6, and is threaded at its lower end to receive a pipe 20. The pipe 20 is adapted to be connected with any suitable means for supplying it with compressed air so that a stream of air can be forced into the aperture I8. Circular recesses I9 and 2l extend into the base plate 4 in diagonally opposite portions thereof.
The member H has flanges 24 and 25 terminating in arms 24a and 25a, respectively, and is provided with a boss 2Ia on its bottom surface which snugly ts in the recess 6 on the base plate 4. The inner surface of tWo of the diametrically opposite arms 24a and 25a of the flanges 24 and 25 are provided with semicircular recesses 26 and 2l which overle apertures 22 and 23 in the base plate 4, which apertures have shoulders intermediate their ends. The other pair of arms 24a and 25a are provided with centering bolts 28 and 29 which t in the recesses I9 and 2l when the member H is positioned on the base plate 4. The centering bolts 28 and 29 make the member H take and maintain exactly the same position each time it is secured to the base plate 4.
In order to firmly hold the member H to the base plate 4 by quickly releasable means so that other similar die-holders can rapidly be substituted for the member H, bolts 38 are provided which extend through the apertures 22 and 23 of the base plate 4 and the recesses 26 and 21 of the anges 24 and 25 when they overle the apertures 22 and 23. The bolts 30 have flattened ends to which are pivotally secured levers 32 having U-shaped heads and cammed bottom surfaces adapted to releasably bear upon the flanges 24 and 25. The bolts 30 are preferably retained in their vertical positions, even though the flanges 24 and 25 are removed from underneath them by means of flanges 33, on the bolts 30, which bear upon the shoulders in the apertures 22 and 23.
When the levers 32 are in their vertical positions, enough clearance is provided between them and the base plate 4 so that the flanges 24 and 25 and the bolts 28 and 29 do not strike the base plate 4 or otherwise interfere in positioning the member H on the base plate 4. The clamping action of the bolts 30 and the levers 32 can be adjusted by varying the positions of the nuts on the ends of the bolts 38. As the bolt 30 and thereby the levers 32 are held up, it is quite easy to put the boss 2la of the member H in the recess of the base plate 4 so that by rotating the member H the recesses 26 and 21 engage the bolts 3|), and the centering bolts 28 and 29 lit in the recesses I9 and 2l. Then the member H is readily secured in place by moving the levers 32 down so that their cam surfaces bear upon the anges 24 and 25.
The member H has a rectangular body portion 36 which has the flanges 24 and 25 on its longitudinal edges. The body portion 36 has the boss extends through the boss 21a. 55
and means for circulating air through said aperture and exhausting it across both faces of said die.
5. An air cooled die-holder comprising means for bearing upon opposed faces of a multiple-hole Y ing streams of air across both faces of said die so as to lower the temperature thereof.
6. A11 air cooled die-holder comprising meansV for bearing upon opposed faces of a multiple-hole die, a die-holding member adapted to engage with said means andrthereby positively position said die, means for circulating air through said member and directing at least one stream of air across both faces of said die so as to lower the temperature thereof.
'7. An air cooled die-holder comprising a body portion having an aperture therein, spaced parallel arms integral with and extending substantially normally from said body portion, clamping means carried by said arms and adapted to be moved substantially normally to the planes of said arms, said clamping means being constructed and arranged to engage with a multiple-hole die and positively position it between said arms, and means for circulating air through said aperture and exhausting streams of air across the faces of the die.
8. An air cooled die-holder comprising a body portion, spaced parallel arms integral with said body portion, clamping means carried by said arms, said clamping means being constructed and arranged to engage with a multiple-hole die and positively position it between said arms, and means for circulating air through said body portion and exhausting streams of air across the faces of "the die.
