This invention relates generally to the printers art and particularly to plate shaving machines.
The main object of this invention is the provision of an improved form of plate shaving machine possessing certain advantages over the ma- 7 chine described in my copending application, Ser. No. 742,378, filed Sept. 1, 1934, Patent #2,064,l'72, Dec. 15, 1936, among which is the provision of a pneumatic chip remover, means for segregating various kinds of chips, and a generally improved construction over that illustrated in the patent application referred to.
I accomplishv this and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a frame in across the top of which is formed a dovetail guide I l upon which is mount- 45 ed a slide i2. To the slide [2 is secured a nut 53 through which extends a feed screw I4 whose ends journal in the frame I6. On the screw I4 is secured a gear l5 which meshes with the gear 86 on the shaft H which journals in the frame iii and-has secured on one end thereof a bevel 86 which meshes with a second bevel gear is on the reversing clutch shaft 26 which journals in the frame it.
On the shaft 26 are rotatably mounted the gears 22! and 22, the former meshing with an idler pinion 23 which in turn meshes with a gear 24 secured to the shaft 25. The gear 22 meshes directly with the gear 26 secured on the shaft 25. Splined on the shaft 26 between the gears 2| and 22 is a slidable clutch jaw, 21, the teeth of which are adapted to engage the jaw 28 on the gear 2| or the jaw 26 on the gear 22. The slidable jaw 2'! is actuated by means of a fork 36 on the rock shaft 3! which is operated through the bevel gears 32 from the rock shaft 33.
The shaft 33 is provided at one end with a hand lever 34 and at the other end with an arm 35.
Mounted within the frame it) is a horizontal shaft 36 which supports one side of a motor base 31 whose opposite side is supported by means of a rod 36 which in turn is suspended from the spring 36 which is carried by the side frame l0. Upon the base 51 rests a motor 55 around whose sheave ii pass'the belts M which pass around the multiple sheave 63 on the shaft 44 of the spirally fluted cutter 45 which journals in the standards 46 which in turn are supported by the frame it.
The slide 42 is provided with a rectangular opening 6? along one end of which is mounted an end stop 46 and along one side of which is mounted a side stop 49.
It is desirable to provide a cleaning space 50 at the junction of the end stop 43 and the side stop 59.
On the shaft 44 is also a grooved pulley 5| whose belt 52 passes around a grooved pulley 53 whose shaft 56 is mounted on a slotted quadrant arm 55 which is rockable on the shaft 25. To the pulley 53 is secured a spur gear 56 which meshes with a gear 51 secured on the shaft 25. The pulley 53 is mounted on the quadrant arm 55 merely for the purpose of providing a convenient tightener for the belt 52. Within the opening 41 is disposed a vertically slidable bed 58 which is free to move in the corner formed by the stops 68 and 49. The bed 58 is provided with a pillar 59 which is slidable within the slide I2. On the under side of the bed 53 is formedtheinclined edge 66 which rests upon the inclined edge 6| of the slidable wedge 62 to which is secured a nut 63 through which passes the screw 54 which is manually operated by means of a hand wheel 65.
A graduated dial 66 is provided on the screw 66 for fractional readings and a worm 6'! on the screw 64 meshes with a worm wheel 56 on the stud bolt 59. Integral with the worm wheel 68 is a pinion 16, which meshes with a gear ll which in turn drives a sleeve 72. Frictionally mounted in the sleeve I2 is an indicating dial shaft 13 on whose upper end is secured a hand or pointer 14 which lies above a dial I5 which is protected by a glass cover 15. The position of the pointer M with relation to the setting of the screw 64 can be adjusted at will by means of the knurled head ll.
Between the standards 46 is mounted a cutter housing I8 which is provided with an inspection opening 19 over which is placed a closure 80. The housing I8 is provided with an inclined side 8| along the lower edge of which is placed a chip deflector 82 which consists of a plurality of spring urged fingers which extend under the discharge side of the cutter 45 and are urged downwardly upon the plate 83 by means of the springs 84. At the upper edge of the inclined side BI is a chip outlet opening which is connected by means of a manifold 85 to the intake side 81 of the blower fan 88. The manifold 86 has its side 89 sloping to facilitate the movement of the chips from the cutter 45 into the fan casing from which they are discharged through the duct 9! into the head 92 which is removably placed over the wheeled can 533 into which the chips 94 are deposited. The head 92 is provided with a central opening 55 from which the air can escape. In some cases, for example, when wood and metal plates are to be shaved alternately, it is desirable to provide an additional can and to separate the pipe 9i into two outlets 9'? and 98 and to control the flow of air to either of the outlets by means of a damper 99 which is controlled by a hand lever I05. The fan 88 is provided with a drive pulley till whose belt N32 is driven from the sheave I03 on the shaft 44.
Journaling under the manifold 86 is a trunnion I04 on one end of which is secured a lever I85 which is joined by a connecting rod I06 to the arm 35. On the trunnion I04 is secured a trip arm I8? which is of a sufiicient length to clear the top edge E88 of the end and side stops 43 and 49 plus the thickness of the maximum cut intended to be taken. Hingedly attached to the trunnion I94 are the arms I99 to which is attached the oiling .roller Ill) which is preferably of felt mounted on a perforated sleeve III.
On the shaft 33 is secured a bevel gear II2 which meshes with a bevel gear I I3 on the shaft 5 HI to which is secured a segment gear I I5 which meshes with a rack H6 on the vertical plunger III on whose upper end is secured a head I I8 whose upper and lower sides I l9 and I20 are beveled to facilitate their engagement with the trip locks i2I and I22 which are secured on the slide I2.
A cutting lubricant such as kerosene is stored in the cup 623 which communicates by means of the pipe I24 with the sleeve I I I. It is desirable to permit the pipe I24 to slide vertically with relation to the manifold 86 in order that the roller I8 may move.
The operation of the device is as follows:
A plate 83 is placed on the bed 58 against the steps 28 and 49. The motor 48 is then operated through the closing of a switch, not shown, causing the cutter 45 to rotate rapidly and also causing the shaft 25 to rotate, thereby revolving the gears 2i and 22 in opposite directions, also permitting the shaft 29 toremain idle by reason of the fact that the jaw 2? is in a neutral position. A movement of the hand lever 34 in one direction will cause the jaw 2'! to engage the jaw 28 and thereby impart rotation to the feed screw it, causing the slide 52 to move along the guide II and move the plate 83 under the trip arm I01 and under the roller I I [I as well as under the chip deflector 82 after which the plate 83 comes into engagement with the spiral cutter 45. The plate is then shaved to a thickness determined by the setting of the hand wheel 65.
It will be noted that the action of the spiral cutter 45 is such that it holds the plate 83 firmly against the bed 58 as well as against the stops 48 and 49, thereby rendering unnecessary the use of any special clamps for holding purposes.
When the slide I2 has moved to a distance at which the trip block I22 will engage the side I20 of the head H8, it will cause the rack H6 to rise and automatically move the lever 34 to a neutral position from which the lever 34 can be moved only toward a reversing position by a manual operation thereof. This will cause the slide I2 to return to its starting point at which time the trip block I2I will engage the upper side II9 of the head IIB, thereby returning the jaw 21 to a neutral position.
If the plate 83 is thick enough to engage the trip arm I01, that is, when an attempt is made to take an excessively deep cut, this will cause the connecting rod I86 to rise, also moving the jaw 21 to a neutral position.
In some cases, it will be found desirable to provide a vibration absorbing roller I25 adjacent to the cutter 45 on the side opposite the roller H0.
It will be understood that none of the members I01, III), 82, or I25 serve to hold the plate down upon the bed 58. This action is accomplished entirely by the cutter 45 itself. It will be noted that the chips 94 which are removed by the cutter 45 are deflected upwardly by the members 82, the action of the cutter 45 being such as to cause them to'move obliquely toward the fan 88 and thereby be discharged into the container 93. Or, if the arrangement shown in Fig. 9 is employed, the chips 94 may be deflected into either of. the cans 93 and 96 by the operation of the hand lever I00.
Referring to Fig. 10, it will be seen that the trip arm I0! is slidable within the bar I26 and the arm I0! is urged downwardly by means of springs I21 on the bolts I28 which are slidable Within the bar I225. The bolts I21 are provided with the nuts I29 for .adjusting purposes.
It is desirable to bevel the face I30 of the trip arm I01 as shown. The bar I26 is provided with the trunnions I04 which also form centers for the arms I89 of the oiling roller III). The purpose in making the trip arm I01 yieldable is to prevent it from biting into the plate 83 when it is withdrawn.
While the roller IIO has been referred to as an oiling roller, it also serves as a holddown roller for the rear end of the plate to prevent it from tipping up when its forward edge engages the chip deflectors 82 and its dual purpose must be so understood.
I claim:
1. A plate shaving machine having in combination a vertically adjustable horizontally movable bed plate, a driving means for slidably moving said bed plate, side and end stops associated with said bed plate, a spiral cutter mounted over said bed plate, chip deflectors disposed along said cutter, an oiling roller disposed in advance of said chip deflectors and a trip arm disposed over said bed plate together with a clutch interposed between the drive mechanism and a source of power actuated by said trip arm whereby a plate of excessive thickness will cause said drive mechanism to move to a neutral position.

vibration absorbing roller on one side of said cutter and a chip deflector on the opposite side thereof, a chip collecting manifold associated with said chip deflector, an exhaust fan having its inlet communicating with said manifold and a trip arm disposed under said manifold including operating connections to said clutch whereby the passage of a plate of excessive thickness under said trip arm will cause said arm to move said clutch to a neutral position.
