My invention relates to boxes and has for an object to provide-a box which is extremely rigid and substantial in construction and which can be repeatedly shipped and handled.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a box having a cover adapted to be frequently opened and reclosed.

A still further object of the invention resides in providing a box capable of sustaining appreciable weight applied upon the cover thereof.

An object of the invention resides in constructing the cover with two flaps adapted to be joined at the center of the box when in a closed position.

A feature of the invention resides in the construction by means of which the two flaps of the cover are held together.

Another object of the invention resides in providing locking means for holding the adjacent w portions of the flaps in proper relation with respect to one another.

A still further object of the invention resides in hinglng the cover flaps to two of the opposite walls oi the box and in attaching cleats to the 35 intermediate walls adapted to support the cover Another object of the invention resides in constructing said cleats with locking means for bolding the cover flaps in closing position.

A feature of the invention resides in constructing the cover flaps at their meeting edges with flanges and in providing seats on said cleats upon which the free edges of said flanges rest.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing said cleats with notches extending completely through the same and in which the corners of the flanges are received.

A specific feature of the invention resides in constructing said notches in a manner to prevent unintentional disengagement of the flanges from said notches.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing the walls having the cleats with hand holes and in arranging said cleats at the uppermost edges of said hand holes to provide grips by means of which the box may be readily moved about. l

A feature of the invention resides in constructing the notches in said cleats with diverging walls.

Other objects of the'inventionreside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

My invention as best shown in Fig. 1 is constructed from fibre board or any suitable material and is formed from a body blank A and two end blanks B. These blanks being of ordinary construction have not been shown in their developed form although their construction will be readily apparent from the drawing.

The blank A consists of a single sheet of fibre board of a width substantially equal to the length of the box, which is scored transversely along spaced lines, ii, i2, i3, M, i5, i6, H, and I8. By means of the various score lines the blank is divided into a bottom 2 i, two side walls 22 and 23 and two cover flaps 24 and 25. The score lines ii, l2, ii, and [18 form two doubled-over flanges 2B and 217, flange 26 having two overlying sections 23 and 29 and the flange 21 having two overlying sections it and 32.,

The blanks B are both constructed identically and are provided with body portions 33 which form the end walls 34 and 35 of the box and with flanges 36 extending inwardly therefrom. These flanges are notched at the corners to permit a folding as shown in Fig. 1 and end walls 34 and 35 are secured to the side walls 22 and 23 and the bottom 2| by means of staples 3'! which extend jointly through the walls of the blank A and through the flanges 36.

The two flanges 26 and 21 are constructed by stitching the sections 28 and 29 together and the sections 3| and 32 together, by means of staples 38 and 39 which are disposed inwardly of the ends of said flanges to permit the corners 4| of said flanges to spring outwardly as shown in Fig. 2. The flaps 24 and are of such Width that the two flanges 26 and 21 meet one another when folded together as shown in Fig. 2. V

For supporting the flaps 24 and 25 along the walls 34 and 35, two cleats 42 and- 43 are employed. These cleats are constructed of wood and are secured to the end walls 34 and 35 by means of staples or nails 64. Inasmuch as both of the cleats A2 and 43 are identical in construction and operate in the same manner, only the l cleat 42 will be described. This cleat is shown in disposed medially of theend thereof. This .slot

extends through the upper edge 46 of said cleat and terminates short of the lower edge 41 of said cleat to form a seat 48. The walls and 52 of said slot are arranged to diverge with respect to one another and give the slot a dovetailed crosssection.

The upper edges 46 of the cleats 42 and 43 are the sections 29 and 3| normally spring outwardly.

These edges engage the walls 5| and 52 of the slots 45 and hold the flaps 24 and 25 in position. At the same time the edges 49 of the flanges 25 and 21 engage the seat 48 and assist in supporting the flanges 24 and 25.

To assist in carrying the box two hand holes 55 and 56 are provided which are disposed in the end walls 34 and 35. These hand holes are disposed so that the upper edges 55 thereof lie flush with the lower edges 41 of the cleats 42 and 43. The lower edges of these cleats, hence form in conjunction with the holes 55 and 56 grips which may be readily engaged by the fingers of the user, thus, when the box is being carried the load is supported by the cleats 42 and 43 and the box is lifted bythe most rigid portions of the same.

Where the box is to be used for beer bottles or similar purposes a filler such as indicated in its entirety by the reference numeral 51 may be employed. This filler consists of a number of longitudinal dividers 58 and a number of transverse dividers 59 which are locked together in the customary manner. The intermediate clivider 59 is preferably constructed of full height and is formed with a notch 5i similar to the notch 45 of cleats 42 and 43 whereby the intermediate portions of the flanges 26 and 21 are held in position in identically the same manner as the ends thereof. The other divider may be constructed considerably shorter if desired.

To facilitate the opening of the cover, two finger holes 62 and 52 are employed which are formed in the two flaps 24 and 25 near the flanges 26 and 21. When the cover flaps are to be raised the forefinger may be inserted in said holes and engaged beneath the flanges 26 and 21. Suitable pressure may be thus applied to withdraw the said flanges from the various notches in which they are lodged.

In my invention the cleats utilized serve several purposes. These cleats first reinforce the upper edges oi the end walls of the box which have no other wall structure attached, to the same. Secondly these cleats provide locking means for securing the cover flaps together. In addition thereto the said cleats support the cover flaps throughout the free lateral edges thereof as well as through the flanges depending therefrom. The cleats of my invention also form in conjunction with suitable holes in the end walls grips by means of which the box may be readilycarried. My invention provides an extremely neat and rigid construction and may be repeatedly used for the shipment of beer bottles and similar articles or commodities. ple support is provided for the cover of the invention so that filled boxes may be piled one upon the other without danger of crushing. By means of the particular construction of the notches with which the sections of the cover flaps cooperate, the flanges are securely locked in position and the cover held properly closed. A box constructed in accord with my invention can be manufactured at very little additional cost over and above the cost of similar types of boxes.

Changes in the specific form of my invention as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A box open at the top comprising side and end walls and a bottom connected therewith, a cover for the box comprising cover flaps hinged to two opposite walls of the box and extending substantially in a common plane when in closing position to effect a closure for the box, cleats secured to the other walls of the box, said cleats having openings therein formed with diverging walls and flanges issuing from said cover flaps and extending into said openings, said flanges being constructed with doubled-over sections one of said sections of each flange having a free edge normally swinging away from the complemental section and engaging one of said diverging walls to hold the cover flaps in closing position.

2. A box open at the top comprising side and end walls and a bottom connected therewith, a cover for the box comprising cover flaps hinged to two opposite walls of the box and extending substantially in a common plane when in closing position to effect a closure for the box, cleats secured to the other Walls of the box said cleats having openings therein formed with diverging walls and members on said cover flaps received within said openings and yieldingly urged toward said diverging walls to hold the cover flaps in closed position.

6. A. box open at the top comprising side and end walls and. a bottom connected therewith, a cover for the box comprising cover flaps hinged to two opposite walls of the box and extending substantially in a common plane when in closing position to eifect a. closure for the box, cleats secured to the other walls of the box upon the interior thereof and having their upper edges substantially in said plane for supporting said cover flaps, said cleats having notches therein, extending completely through said cleats from side to side and falling short of the lower edge thereoi, said walls to which the cleats are attached extending across and covering said notches, and flanges issuing downwardly from said cover flaps, said flanges being received within said notches, the ends of said flanges when disposed within said notches being covered by the walls to which said cleats are attached.

A box open at the top comprising side and end walls and a bottom connected therewith, a cover for the box hinged to one of the walls, cleats secured to the two adjacent walls of the box at the upper edge thereof, said cleats having shoulders extending downwardly from the upper edges of the cleats and forming acute angles therewith, a flange issuing from said cover and adapted to be positioned adjacent said shoulder, said flange being constructed with two sections, one of said sections being doubled back upon the other section and having a free edge normally swinging away from the complemental section and engaging said shoulder, and means for engaging the other section to maintain ,said free edge in engagement with said shoulder.
