,This invention relates to improvements in autographic registers, and more particularly to an improved mechanism for facilitating threading of the webs or record strips into operative position with relation to the web-feeding mechanism. The improvements of the invention, according to the present disclosure, are embodied in an autographic register of the type disclosed in Patent No. 1,658,127, issued to Clarence L. Johnston on February 7, 1928. y
One of the advantages of a machine of the above type is that in use one or more webs or sets of forms bearing copies of the memoranda are passed automatically into a locked ling cornpartment to which access can only be obtained by a person having the key. In the usual type of machine, however, the feed discs and the upper feed roller which cooperate tofeed the webs are arranged adjacent to the filing compartment and the webs pass between the discs and rollers to a dividing plate where the lowest web or webs is or are deflected and passed downwardly through a slot into the locked compartment. To reload the machine, however, it is necessary toA swing the upper feed roller away from vthe feed discs to enable the fresh set of webs to be correctly aligned over the feed discs with their forward edges over and under the dividing plate as desired.
In the known machine the upper feed roller is carried ina housing which is pivotally mounted and which is normally held locked in the operative position, for example, by a part of the locked filing compartment. Thus to reload the machine, the filing compartment must rst be unlocked to enable the housing to be swung back, thus giving access to the webs in the compartment.
It is not always desirable that the person who reloads the machine should have access to the locked compartment.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a machine of the above described type with means whereby the machine can be reloaded without the necessity of unlocking the filing compartment, or of removing the upper feed roller from contact with the lower feed discs, or taking it out of mesh with its own drive. V
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the machine that access to the passage or slot through which the web passes into the locked filing compartment is made impossible, thus preventing tampering With the machine in this respect. In addition the invention includes improved means for guiding the webs between the feed discs and upper roller4 and through the aforesaid passage or slot withthe object of pre- (Cfl. 282-16) venting tearing or jamming and the possibility of a torn or uneven web upsetting the normal working o-f the machine.V Further improvement is to make it impossible for a web intended to be issued out of the machine to change its path by fouling the dividing plate and becoming deflected into the locked up compartment.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, in an autographic register of the type referred to, the upper feed roller is carried in a displaceable housing normally held locked in the position in which the roller is in operative associa-` tion with the feed discs, and the dividing plate separating the web or webs' intended to pass into the filing compartment from those which are to be issued from the register, is extended rearwardly toward the writing plate. The rear edge of the dividing plate preferably projects at the rear of thev upper roller housing. Y Y
Further, in the arrangement according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, a complete closure is effected of the passage by which the lowest web or webs pass into the filing compartment and access to this passage can only be obtained when the upper feed roller housing is unlocked and displaced.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out in the following detailed description of certain illustrative but preferred embodiments of the invention and will be in part obvious in connection therewith. I

By carrying the dividing plate backwards to a position in close proximity to the front edge of the Writing plate I, the passage by which the lower web or webs pass to the filing compartment is eifectively closed at the rear while the forward end of this passage, as is clear from the drawings, is also closed. When the housing 4 is locked in the operative position as shown in Fig. l, the rear edge ofthe dividing plate 6 preferablyrprojects beyond the housing 4. A clearance is, of course, allowed between 'the housing and the plate to permit the upper webs The openings 9 in the plate to permit the feed discs and rollers to cooperate are of `an improved shape as will be described below. A slot I0 is also provided inthe plate to permit a gear wheel on the spindle II carrying the discsv 2 to mesh with a gear wheel (not shown) on the spindle vcarrying the roller 3 for driving the spindle. v A
l further slot I2 in the plate provides for the passage of the fold directing finger or `hook I3 on the disc 2a mounted on the shaft II, said finger being adapted to enter perforations in a lower web to direct it downwardly into the compartment 1. The upper webs pass over the uppersurface of the plate 6 and issue on to the topv plate 8 in known manner. The arrangement of the feed controlling apertures and fold ldirecting apertures of the webs or strips may be 'substantially as disclosed in the above mentioned'Johnston patent. By hingedly mountingV the plate 6 as shown the severance of the web andthe collection of written copies from the lingcompart-v Vment Yare greatly facilitated.
From the foregoing it will be Yseen that the at the opposite sides of the deector plate 6. The strips or webs, when being threaded into the feed mechanism and when being fed forwardly thereby extend through these passageways, the

It will .be seen in Fig. 1 that bothof the web passageways have their receiving openings positioned at the rear of the web deflecting device. This arrangement is of material advantage when threading the webs into the grip of the feedV mechanism, since said websmay thus be easily entered through the receiving openings into the passageways and then By means of notches in the upper edges of the arms 5 and the cooperating f into the feed grip without raising the housing4 and without adjusting any other parts of the mechanism. The downwardly inclined forward margin of the writing plate or platen I also aids in guiding the file web into thelower passageway.
Also from the above disclosure it will be seen that the complete web deflecting device for separating the webs and directing them to issue over the top plate 8 and to be filed lin the compartment 1, may be Vconsidered as comprising not only the deflector: plate 6 with its guides I4 or I4a. hereinafter referred to (when these are used), but also the associated parts such as the housing 4 and' the kupper and lower web receiving passageways above and below the deflector plate 6.
In order to enable the feed starting blocks 2b on the feed discs 2 to grip a large area of the paper webs and thus function properly on possibly torn webs and avoid jamming, the openings 9 of the dividing or deflector plate 6 are made wide. The rear edge of each opening 9 is preferably straight along a vtransverse Vline lying near the rear. edge of the dividing plate 6; but the forward part of each opening 9 is curved or arched as seen in plany in Fig. 2. This shape, which may be approximately the segment of a circle or an ellipse, is found to4 be effective in preventing the perforated edges or torn leading edges of the webs from catching in* the openings and tendingrto jam'or foul the feed. By means of this structural arrangement'it will be seenV that the deflector plate at the'forward terminal of said opening presents a concave marginal portion which is directed toward the advancing webs as the latter are moved forwardly by operation ofl the feeding mechanism. The underside of the deector plate 6 may be furnished with guides I4, formed by curved surfaces or plates, the function of which is to guide and keep the front edgesof the webs destined` be arranged behind the guides I4 to direct the` webs into the filing compartment.
-If desired the openings 9 maybe made shorter at the forward or curved ends than those shown in Fig. 2, and thus minimize the desirability of fitting guides I4 or I 4a for the lower Webs. While an advantage arises as lfar as the lower webs are concerned, the shorter openings increase the possibility of jamming by the top webs. The dimentions of the openings 9 may, therefore,l be chosen to effect a compromise and be such that whileV the chances of foulingv and jamming may not be wholly removed, the fitting of the guide I4,v
I4a on the underside ofthe plate 6 may be dis# pensed with. It is preferred, however, to employ the larger size o'f'openings and to t suitable guides. f Y
'Ihe openings for the starting blocks 2b may be carried back to cut the rear edge of the plate 6, as shown. at 9a, in Fig. 4, and an important advantage is obtained thereby. 'Ihis lies in the fact that the apparatus may be loaded when the closed compartment 'I and, therefore, the housing 4 are locked, so that the machine operator can carry out such loading without the attendance of a person authorized to open the compartment 1. To carry out the loading operation, the usual apertured Writing plate cover (not shown) is swung back, giving access to the writing plate I. The magazine (also not shown) is opened and the new webs threaded through a usual tension device or grid such, for example, as shown in the Johnston patent mentioned.
To assist in obtaining correct alignment of the webs, aligning pins I are adapted to be projected up through holes in the writing plate I by the operation of a suitable handle Ilia fixed to a spindle I6, and a rock arm I'I fixed to said spindle, as later more fully described. The pins I5 are disposed apart by the distance between the usual perforations or slots in the forms into which the web is divi-ded, as shown in the Johnston patent, and the new Webs are placed on lthe writing plate with the pins extending through the marginal holes in, say, the second forms in each web. The ends of the webs intended for the locked compartment 1 are then inserted under the rear edge of the plate B, one at a time, each web being introduced in turn between the discs 2 and the feed roller 3 by a small movement of the usual operating handle keyed to the drive shaft or spindle II. Such movement of the operating handle is sufficient to draw in the slack in the web between the pins I5 and the roller 3, it being understood that the distance between the pins I5 and the roller 3 is chosen so that when the slack has been taken up the holes in the leading edge of the web arrive between the feed discs and the upper roller so that the discs cannot grip the web untilthe feed starting blocks 2b on the discs come into operation. The upper webs are then introduced between the feed discs 2 and the roller 3 in similar manner but above the plate E. The aligning pins I5 are then depressed, for example, by means of the handle on the spindle I 5. The forward movement of the operating handle already begun during the loading process is now completed which brings the feed blocks 2b into contact with all of the webs just loaded aligning them ready for issue by the normal operation of the machine.
In Fig. 1 is shown an arrangement by which the aligning pins I5 are so arranged that the operator can only turn them up when the operating handle of the feed mechanism is in such a position that the feed starting or driving blocks 2b on the feed discs 2 are in an inoperative position. The pins I5' when up are held in this position until the operating feed handle is turned to a position in which the blocks are about to again reach the position when they are opposite the feed roller 3, at which moment the pins are retracted to release any webs that may be thereon. Thi-s prevents tearing of the webs on the aligning pins I5.
The arrangement can be clearly seen in Fig. 1 in which the pins I5 are ycarried on a plate or arm I8 pivot-ally mounted on a cross-shaft I9 carried on the machine frame. Pivotally mounted on a bracket I8 on the plate I8 is a downwardly depending arm 20 having a hooked end 20. A shoulder 2I is also formed on the arm 20. The arm 20 is arranged to move in a slot in a fixed member 22 to which is rigidly attached a locking bar 23. The pin I5 may be raised to its operative position by turning the handle IML-swinging the arm Il into engagement with a lug I8a on the supporting plate I8. The pins I5 are held in their operating position bycooperation of the shoulder 2|. Pivotallyconnected to the arm 2U is a link 24 pivotally connected toone armof a bell crank lever 25 carried on a fixed pivot 25a. '-I'hev end of the other arm of the lever 25 is provided with two projections 26, 2I.v Pins 28, 29 are arranged on concentric circles of different radii on the disc 2a and are arranged to cooperate with the projections on .the end of the lever 25 as will be described.
The disc 2a.'.is arranged to rotate in a counterclockwise direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. When the lever II is moved up by means of the handle on the spindle IB the pins I5 and the plate I8 also move upwardly. If the lever 25 is in the position shown in full lines, to which position it is biased by a spring 25h, the arm 20 moves to the upper position shown in dotted lines, and by means of the shoulder 2| engaging with the member 22 is held in this position. It will be appreciated that the spring 25h which biases the lever 25 moves the arm 20 forwardly so that the shoulder 2I engages the plate 22. When the disc 2a is rotated, some time before the feed starting blocks 2b reach their opervative position, the pin 28 strikes the projection 28 and rotates the lever 25, thus swinging the ,arm 20 to the rright so that the shoulder 2| is disengaged, allowing the plate I8 and pins I5 to drop. The pin 28, which in the normal operation of the machine is the first to engage with the lever `25, is only able to displace the latter far enough to insure the release of the hanging arm 28 from engagement with the plate 22. A further movement of the pin 28 releases the lever 25, which drops back to its normal position under the influence of spring 25h as shown by the full line. The function of the pin 2S is to repeat the displacement of the lever 25 but to carry it further than in the case of pin 28, so that the hook 2,0 at the end of arm 20 engages with the locking bar 23 and prevents the plate I8 from being moved upwardly from its last inoperative position.
The two pins 28 and 28 thus operate to prevent lifting kof the plate I8 and the pins I5 while the blocks 2b on the feed discs are approaching or are in their operative feeding position, as in this position it is not possible to reload new webs into the machine. The position and arrangement of pin 28 insure that the arm 20 is tripped and the plate I8 dropped before the feed starting blocks have time to drag the `forms that for loading purposes have been threaded on the pins I5, the loading pins I5 carried by plate I8 being also dropped automatically before the feeding discs start to move the forms.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, itY is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in `the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having now particularly Vdescribed my invention, the following is claimed:
1. In an autographic register, in combination, feed mechanism having a feed grip for gripping and feeding the webs, a web-deflecting device for separating webs emerging from the feed mechanism into different courses, said deflecting device being provided with oppositely disposed webreceiving passageways opening to the rear of said feed grip and accessible at the rear thereof for web reception, said feed mechanism having rotary web feed elements with said feed grip therebetween for gripping and feeding the webs, said web-defiecting device includingA a web-deflecting plate positioned adjacent to said feed grip and having an'opening in which the feed grip portion of one of said rotary elements is positioned, web-starting means on one of said rotary feed elements adapted to enter said opening, Webholding means positioned for cooperation with parts of the Webs positioned rearwardly from the feed mechanism for holding Webs being threaded into said feed mechanism, and means operated by the Web feeding operation of Vsaid feed mechanism for releasing said holding means When said starting means moves into] proximity to said opening. 5. In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism operative to feed the strips into operative position, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips for entry into feeding `relation with reference to said feedingV mechanism, means operated by said feeding mechanism for controlling the operative position of said strip positioning means, and an independent manual means for setting said strip positioning means in strip engaging position independently of said feeding mechanism.
6. means operable independently of the feeding mechanism for setting said positioning means in operative strip engaging position, means controlled at predetermined intervals by actuation of the strip feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position, and a locking device operatively controlled by said feeding mechanism for locking said positioning means against assuming a strip controlling position at a certain position of the feeding mechanism.

In a device of the character described, in combination, .strip feeding mechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery adjacent to Which is a stripengaging, starting lug and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, and means controlled by feeding actuation of said feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position prior to engagement of said starting lug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery adjacent to Which is a strip engaging, starting lug and including also a pressure Aroll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, means controlled by feeding actuation of -said feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position prior to engagement of said startinglug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation, and an independent manual means for setting said strip positioning means in strip engaging position independently of said feeding mechanism.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery adjacent to Which is a strip engaging, starting lug and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, means controlled by feeding actuation of said feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position prior to engagement of said starting lug With said pressure roll during a feeding operation, and means controlled by the feeding mechanism for preventing movement of said strip positioning means into strip engaging position immediately prior to .engagement of said starting lug With said pressure roll during a feeding operation.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism including a lfeeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery adjacent to which is a strip vengaging, starting lug and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, means controlled by feeding actuation of said feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position prior to engagement of said starting lug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation,` an independent manual means for setting said strippositioning means in strip engaging positionindependently of said Vfeeding mechanism, and means controlled by the feeding mechanism for preventing movement of said strip positioning means into strip engaging position immediately prior to engagement of said starting vlug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation. v

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding lmechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery adjacent to which is a strip engaging, starting lug and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, means controlled by feeding actuation of said feeding mechanism for retracting said positioning means fro-m strip engaging position prior to engagement of said starting lug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation, a housing for said pressure roll, and a strip deflecting plate positioned adjacent said feeding grip and extending rearwardly to present strip receiving passageways at the opposite sides thereof having receiving openings positioned at the rear of said housing so as to provide entry access of the strips into the feed grip.
20. In a device of the character described, in-
gaging, starting lug and including 'also aP pressure roll cooperating with said periphery and starting lug to form a feeding grip, strip engaging strip positioning means for positioning strips in feeding relation with reference to said feeding mechanism, means vfor retracting said positioning means from strip engaging position prior to engagement'of said starting lug with said pressure roll during a feeding operation, a housing for said pressure roll, and a strip deflecting plate positioned adjacent said feeding grip and extending rearwardly to present strip receiving passageways having receiving openings positioned at the oppositeY sides thereof at the rear of said housing vso as to provide entry access o-f the strips into the feed grip, said deflecting plate having an opening into which said starting lug passes during feeding operation, said deflector' plate at the forward terminal of said opening presenting' a concave marginal portionl directed towardv the forwardly feeding strips.

In a device ofthe character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanismincluding a feeding member having` a strip gripping, feeding periphery and includingfalso a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery to form a feeding grip, afeedroll housing for said feed roll and astrip deiiecting plate positioned adjacent to said feeding gripY and extending rearwardly beyond said housing to ypresent strip receiving passageways at the opposite sides thereof, said passageways each having a -receiving opening positioned at the rear edge of said 'housing so as to provide access for entering the strips into the feed grip` without disturbance of said housing.
22. In a device ofthe character described, in-

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism' including a Yfeeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery to form a feeding grip, a feed roll housing for said feed roll and a strip deecting plate positioned adjacent to said feeding grip and extending rearwardly beyond Vsaid housing to present strip receiving passageways at the opposite sides thereof, said passageways each having a receiving opening positioned at the rear edge of said housing so as to provide access for entering the strips into the feed grip without disturbance of said housing, said deflecting plate having an opening receiving said strip gripping feeding periphery, and a strip deflector positioned adjacent to sai-d opening for deflecting a feeding strip away from the opening so as to avoid strip obstruction thereby.

combination, strip feeding mechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery to form a feeding grip, a feed roll housingfor said feed roll, a strip deilecting plate positioned adjacent to said feeding grip and extending rearwardly beyond said housing to present strip receiving passageways at the opposite sides thereof at the rear edge of said housing so as to provide access for. entering the strips into the feed grip without disturbance of said housing, said delecting plate having an opening receiving said gripping feeding periphery and a strip deflecting spring finger mounted on said deiiector plate adjacent to the forward terminal of said opening for deflecting a feeding strip away from the opening so as to avoid strip obstruction thereby.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism including a feeding member having a strip gripping, feeding periphery and including also a pressure roll cooperating with said periphery to form a feeding grip, a movably mounted feed roll housing for said feed roll, a strip deflecting plate positioned adjacent to said feeding grip and extending rearwardly to present strip receiving passageways at the opposite sides thereof at the rear of said housing so as to provide access for entering the strips into the feeding grip, a writing plate ,Y positioned rearwardly of said strip receiving passageways, a. movably mounted strip positioning pin spaced rearwardly along said writing plate from said passageways, retracting means for said pin operatively controlled by said strip feeding mechanism, a latching device for holding said positioning pin in operative position, and means independent of said feeding mechanism for projecting said pin into operative, strip engaging position.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism, a movably mounted strip positioning pin spaced rearwardly fro-m said feeding mechanism, means for setting said pin in strip engaging position, a pin holding device including a holding member for holding said pin in its operative strip engaging position, and operating means controlled by said feeding mechanism for releasing said holding member from pin holding position at one point of the operative feed cycle, and for holding said pin from projection into operative position at another point in said cycle.

In a device of the character described, in combination, strip feeding mechanism including a rotary feed disk, a movably mounted strip positioning pin spaced rearwardly from said feeding mechanism, means for setting said pin in strip engaging position, a pin holding deviceincluding a holding member for holding said pin in its operative strip engaging position, a plurality of operative elements mounted for movement with said feed disk, and operating means cooperating with one of said operative elements for releasing said holding member from pin holding position at one point of the operative feed cycle, and cooperating with another of said operating elements for holding said pin from projection into operative position at another point in said cycle.

In a device of the character described adapted to operate on a strip provided with perforations at intervals, in combination, strip feed mechanism including a feed roll adapted to interrupt the strip feed at the strip perforations, starting means controlled by said feed mechanism for starting the strips after the feed thereof has been interrupted, strip positioning means for positioning parts of the strips prior to entry thereof into said feed mechanism, and shifting means controlled by operation of said feed mechanism for shifting said strip positioning means so as to avoid strip positioning control thereby during the strip starting operation of said starting means.

In a device of the character described adapted to operate on a strip providedwith perforations at intervals, in combination, strip feed mechanism including a feed roll adaptedto interrupt the strip feed at the strip perforations, starting means controlled by said feed mechanism for starting the strips after the feed thereof has been interrupted, strip positioning means for positioning parts of the strips prior to entry thereof into said feed mechanism, shifting means controlled by operation of said feed mechanism for shifting said strip positioning means so as to avoid strip positioning -control thereby during the strip starting operation of said starting means, and means controlled by operation of said feeding mechanism for preventing resetting of said positioning means at a predetermined point in the cycle of operation of said feed mechanism.

In a device of the character described adapted to operate on a strip provided with perforations at intervals, in combination, strip feed mechanism including a feed roll adapted to interrupt the strip feed at the, strip perforations, starting means controlled byV said feed mechanism for startingthe strips after the feed thereof has been interrupted, strip positioning. I means including a movably mounted strip aper- Y ture engaging pin for positioning parts of the strips prior to entry thereof into said feed mechanism, Vand shifting means controlled by strip feeding operation of said feed mechanism for shifting said aperture engaging pin so as to avoid entry thereof into the strip aperture.

In a device of the character described adapted to operate on a strip provided with perforations at intervals, in combination, strip feed mechanism including a feed roll adapted to interrupt the strip feed at the strip perforations, starting means controlled by said feed mechanism for starting the strips after the feed thereof has been interrupted, strip positioning means including a movably mounted strip aperture engaging pin for positioning parts of the strips prior to entry thereof into said feed mechanism, shifting means controlled by strip feeding operation of said feed mechanism for shifting said aperture engaging pin so as to avoid entry thereof into the strip aperture, and means controlled l.by operation of said feed mechanism for preventing resetting of said positioning means during the starting operation of said strip starting means.
35. In a devicle of the character described adapted to operate on a strip provided with perforations at intervals, in combination, a writing plate or platen, strip feeding mechanism for feeding strips on said platen and including a feed roll adapted to interrupt the strip'feed at the strip perforations, starting means controlled by said feeding mechanism for starting the strips after the feed thereof has been interrupted, means for positioning parts of the strips with reference to the platen including a movably mounted strip aperture engaging pin, said pin being positioned at the rear of the feeding mechanism beyond the Writing surface of the platen, and shifting means controlled by strip feeding operation of said feeding mechanism for shifting said aperture engaging pin so as to avoid entry thereof into a strip aperture.
