In making up the mattress, the inner spring is arranged on a suitable support such as atable .or bench and the endless boxing strip arranged around the periphery thereof, a'strip I 4 of burlap, canvas or other suitable material is vthen arran-ged over the top of the spring construction to provide a liner. Theedge I5 of the innerfply is then preferably stitched or otherwise secured to the adjacent edge of the liner I4 asindicated at I6. The extended edge 3 of the padding ply 2 of the border strip and the ply Ii are then wrapped'or folded'over the top'face of the'construction to overlie the face of the liner I4 and the Aedge 1, then laced or secured to the liner I4 as indicated -at I1. may be applied 'in the usual manner. "In some mattresses concealed tufting may be employed but inasmuch as the tufting in itself forms no part of the present invention and is old in the art, it is not necessary to describe the same in detail herein.

In the modified construction shown in Fig. 5, a pad 24 of sisal or similar material is shown instead of the burlap I4 disclosed in Fig. 1. The sisal or the like, when used, may be in the form of a padand quilted by'stitching Z5 or the like. The inner andintermediate plies of fabric may be secured to the sisal in the same manner as to vthe burlap. It may be mentioned that the burlap v,or sisal may be secured to the coils of the springs or the frame Work or helicals if so desired, and it may alsobe mentioned that it is not essential although desired and preferred, to secure the inner ply I of the boxing to the liner. However, securing the inner ply to the burlap or sisal or other liner prevents any of the padding 3 from breaking loose and getting down in the springs, and securing the ply 6 likewise prevents the same from Working out to the edge ofthe construction and any ofthe filler I8 from becoming displaced into the springs.

The construction described has many `,advantages. Thev boxing or border is substantial and durable. It holds its shape and at all times presents a pleasing appearance. The mattress retains its shape even afterlcng periods of use and since the filling I8 cannot work down and become displaced below the top of the springs or work up from the bottom, the mattress edges are always maintained in order. yThe portions 3 do not in any way constitute rolls but do afford a very substantial Wrapping or padding at the edges of the spring so that the mattress does not break down at this point and also, in the event any of the top filling I8 is displaced inwardly, the edge of the springs are padded andare not projected outwardly into the top tick or the boxingwhereby the outer coverings of the mattress Will becomeworn or frayed. By constructing the edgeV padding as a part of the border, it is not necessary toY separately apply padding to the edges of the springs and separately secure it thereto. Being a part of the border, it is easily Wrapped over and anchored to the liner, and is preferred to rolls or like` devices. The fillings 2 and I8 may be of any suitable material such as i cotton, hair orv the like, which may be found satisfactory for the purpose.

Having thus described my invention, it is ob vious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same Without departing from the spirit'of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shovvny and described or uses mentioned.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz 1. In a mattress of the kind described, an inner resilient construction, material forming a lining for the top and the bottom of the resilient construction, a boxing enclosing` the vertical edges vof the resilient construction, said boxing comprising av pair of contiguous outerf'fabric sheets, an inner fabric sheet and a layer of filling material positioned .between and fastened to said inner ,and outer fabric sheets, said filling material and the outerfabric sheet contiguous thereto being substantially wider than the depth of theresilient construction and having their top and bottom edges inturned to form" marginal covers for the resilient construction, the edges of said inner fabric sheet and the margins of said lining materials being contiguous, means fastening said inner fabric sheet to the borders of said lining material, means fastening said inturned edges to the adjacent lining material, top and bottom layers of padding material respectively covering the linings and said overlapping portions of the boxing, a pair of fabric sheets respec tively forming covers for said top and bottom padding material and means fastening said cover sheets to the outside boxing sheet the Width of the outside fabric sheet of the boxing being greater than the depth of said resilient construction and marginal covers and less than the over- Y all depth of the mattress whereby the marginal edges of said cover sheets are maintained taut and convergent toward the boxing.

2. In a mattress of the kind described, an inner spring construction, a material forming linings engaging the top and the bottom of the spring construction, a quilted boxing enclosing the vertical edges of the spring construction, said boxing comprising a pair of contiguous outer fabric sheets, an inner fabric sheet and a layer of filling material positioned between and fastened to said inner and outer fabric sheets at spaced intervals, said filling material and the outer fab ric sheet contiguous thereto being substantially Wider than the depth of the spring construction and having their top and bottom edges inturned to form substantial covers for the marginal edges of said linings and spring construction, means fastening the edges of said inturned lling material and fabric sheet to the adjacent linings, top and bottom layers of padding material respectively covering the linings and said overlapping portions of the boxing, a pair of fabric sheets respectively forming cover ticks for said top and bottom padding material, and means fastening said cover sheets to the outside boxing sheet, the Width of the outside fabric sheet of the boxing being greater than the combined depth of the spring construction, the linings and the marginal covers and less than the overall depth of the mattress, whereby the marginal edges of said cover ticks are maintained taut and convergent toward the boxing.

In a mattress boxing for application to a spring construction of the kind described, an outside and an inner fabric ply, a ply consisting of a layer of filling material arranged between said plies contiguous to the inner ply but of greater Width than the inner ply and projecting beyond the edges thereof, and an intermediate fabric ply interposed between the ply of filling material and the outer ply and of greater Width than the lling material ply and projecting beyond the edges thereof, means securing said plies together to provide a unitary structure consisting of a plurality of fastening members arranged at spaced intervals both laterally and longitudi nally of the strip of boxing and providing ventilators, the meeting ends of the boxing strip beu ing secured together to provide an endless strip of a length to lit about a mattress body including said spring construction, said intermediate fabric ply and ply of filling material being Wider than the depth of and adapted to form a substantial cover over the outer rows of the spring construction, said inner fabric ply having a Width approximately equal to the depth of the spring construction and said outside fabric ply having a Width greater than the depth of the spring construction and materially less than the depth of the mattress body.
