Claims.
My invention relates generally to structures presenting openings as for example, and more particularly, in the case of hatches of refrigerator cars, provided with closures mounted to be 5 moved into and out of closing position, and which it is desired be locked either in closed position or partially open position, as for instance to provide for the ventilation of the space controlled by the closure.
My objects are to provide means for so locking the closures; to provide means for locking the closures in different partially open positions; and to accomplish these purposes by a simple, inexpensive, durable, and positively functioning construction.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary View, in sectional elevation, of the hatch of a refrigerator car having a closure with means embodying my invention for locking it in diiferent positions.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a retainer or casing for a bolt forming a part of said means.
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of the retainer or casing shown in Fig. 2, with the bolt in place therein.
Figure 4 is an end view of the retainer or casing.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken at the line 5 on Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and
Figure 6, an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken at the line 6 on Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the construction shown wherein I have illustrated my invention as provided for the locking of a hatch cover, of a refrigerator car, in different positions, a portion of the roof of the car is shown at 'I andthe hatch thereof which opens into the ice compartment and as commonly provided, at S. The cover for the hatch 8 is shown at 9 and is provided with the usual depending plug portion Ill which ts the hatch 8 in sealed engagement therewith when the cover is closed, the cover being hinged along one edge as represented at Il to a bracket I2 secured to the roof of the car adjacent the hatch thereby adapting the cover to be swung from closed position represented by the dotted lines at the right-hand side of Fig. 1 to the full open position shown by the dotted lines at the left-hand side of Fig. 1.
Secured to the top surface of the free edge portion of the cover 9, as by bolts I3, is a casting I4 formed with spaced apart jaws l5 and i6 having alining openings I1 and I8.
The casting It is also formed with a tubular portion I9 having an opening 26 extending lengthwise entirely therethrough and in line with, and opening into, the opening I8, the upper wall of the opening 2li being longitudinally slotted as shown at 2l from a point adjacent the jaw I6 entirely through the opposite end of the tubular 5 portion I9.
A pair of spaced ribs 22 and 23 rise from the body of the casting I4 between the ends of the tubular portion I9 to provide .an upwardly opening recess 24 therebetween which extends through 10 the wall of the opening 20 as shown.
Movable lengthwise in the openings I1, I8 and i9 is a bolt having a cylindrical portion 25 and held against accidental separation from the casting Ill which forms a bolt casing or retainer, by a 16 stop 26 shown as a rivet secured to the casing. The bolt referred to has a handle portion 21 shown as extending from the body portion 25 at a right angle thereto `and adapted to enter the space 24 between the ribs 22 and 23 as shown 20 when the bolt is projected to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 5 in which it extends ,at one end of its cylindrical portion 25 into the openings I'I and I8.
Fulcrumed at its lower end to the roof I of 25 the car, as indicated at 28, is an upwardly extending lock lever 29 shown as having a longitudinal series of bolt-receiving holes 30 and adapted to extend into the space between the jaws I5 and IG for engagement by the bolt above 30 described which may enter the one of the holes 3l) in registration therewith.
The lowerrnost one of the holes 30, preferably slightly elongated, is so positioned that it registers with the bolt when the cover is swung to lower- 35 most horizontal closed position as shown by the dotted lines at the right-hand side of Fig. 1, thus permitting of the locking of the cover in closed position. The others of these holes are provided to permit the cover to be locked by the bolt in va- 40 rious degrees, as desired, of partially open position, as for example as shown by the full lines in Fig. 1 wherein the bolt extends into the uppermost one of the holes 3B for locking the cover in the extreme partially open position. 45
When the cover has been locked in the desired position stated, locking means may be sealed against release as by means of a so-called car seal such as the common form of strap car seal shown at 3l the strap portion of which is threaded 50 through vholes 32 in the ribs 22 and 23 and a registering hole 33 in the handle portion 21 of the bolt. Other sealing means for the lock may be used as for example a seal pin 25a inserted into an opening in the protruding end of the bolt. 55
In assembling the bolt and casing the bolt is introduced at the end thereof farthest from the handle 21 into the outer end of the opening 20 and slid along the member I9 to a position in which the other end of the bolt clears the entering end of the opening 20 and the stop 26 then applied to` position, the latter being so positioned that the bolt may be withdrawn from the space between the jaws I and i6 to permit of the manipulation of the lever 29.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device adapted to be mounted on a closure in cooperation with a lock lever, the device comprising an'attaching plate, spaced jaws on the plate open at one end to receive the lock lever, a tubular portion on said plate having one end open through one of said jaws, and a movable securing bolt for said lock lever mounted by said tubular portion adapted for projection through sai-d opening, the last mentioned jaw thus functioning dually in the guidance of both the lever and the securing bolt.
2, A device adapted to be mounted on a closure in cooperation with a lock lever, the device comprising a one piece retainer, spaced jaws on the retainer open at one end to receive the lock lever, a tubular portion on said retainer having one end integral with one of said jaws, the latter jaw having an 4opening therethrough, and a movable securing bolt for said lock lever adapted for projection through said opening, said latter jaw thus functioning dually in the guidance of both the lever and the securing bolt.
3. A device adapted to be mounted on a closure in cooperation with a lock lever, said `device comprising a. plate having an attaching portion, spaced jaws on the plate open at one end to receive a lock lever, a tubular portion on said plate adjacent the innermost jaw, the latter jaw having an opening therethrough, said tubular portion having a longitudinal slot initially open at the end of the tubular portion remote to the jaws, a securing bolt slidable in said tubular portion for projection through said opening to engage the lock lever, said latter jaw thus functioning dually in the guidance of both the lever and the securing bolt, operating means on the bolt extending through said slot, and means extending into' the bore of the tubular portion to prevent disengagement of the bolt therefrom.
4. A device adapted to be mounted on a closure in cooperation with a lock lever, a device comprising a plate having an attaching portion, spaced jaws on the plate open at one end to receive a lock lever, a tubular portion on said plate adjacent the innermost jaw, the latter jaw having an opening therethrough, said tubular portion having a longitudinal slot initially open at the end of the tubular portion remote to the jaws, a securing bolt slidable in said tubular por-v tion for projection through said opening to engage the lock lever, said latter jaw thus functioning dually in the guidance of both the lever and the securing bolt, operating means .on the bolt extending through said slot, means extending into k the bore of the tubular portion to prevent disengagement of the bolt therefrom, said slot being open intermediate its end whereby the bolt may be turned, and means adjacent the opening of the slot coacting with the operating means to prevent sliding of the bolt.
5. A bolt device comprising a member having a bore to receive a bolt provided with a handle extending laterally therefrom, the wall 0f said bore at one end of the device having a slot eX- tending lengthwise thereof through said end of the device to receive said handle upon introducing the bolt into the slotted end of the bore, said bore having a slot traversing said bore at the other end of said device for receiving an element E' to be interlocked with said bolt, the device at one end of the bore having a part functioning dually in the guidance of both said element and the securing bolt.
