Patented Mar. 22, 1938- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED BRASSIERE AND BATHING SUI Ruth Freedman, New York, N. Y.
Application September 16, 1936, Serial No. 101,016
1 Claim. 2-61) wearer and separate them from each other and 10 from the body of the wearer.
The fourth object of the invention is the production of a combined brassiere and bathing suit, which can easily and quickly be put on by the wearer.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 represents a rear elevation partly broken away of the combined brassiere and bathing suit; Fig. 2 shows a section of Fig. 1 on the line 2, 2; Fig. 3 shows an enlarged interior view of the brassiere per se in an unfolded position; Fig. 4 indicates a section of Fig. 3 on the line 4, 4; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 5, 5; Fig. 6 indicates an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 6, 6: Fig. '1 represents an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 1, 1; .Fig. 8 shows a section of Fig. 3 on the line 8, 8 and Fig. 9 is an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 9, 9.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 9, the brassiere per se comprises the body portion 20, cut on the bias, 30 and preferably of broadcloth, silk, or satin, having the wave shaped lower edge 2| and the upper end with the central curved edge 22, the inclined edges 23 and the end'curved edges 24. At
the ends of the body portion 26 are indicated the -vertical hems 25.
The body portion 26 is folded at the central' portions 26, to form the return folds 21, to produce the spherical shaped outwardly extending pockets 3!! for the breasts of the wearer. The 40 body portion 20 and the folds 21 are stitched together by the stitches 3|.
Through the wall of each pocket 30 extends the oval opening 33, which cuts off the upper portion of the return folds 21 and is covered with the 45 netting 34.
- The body portion 20 coinprises'the outer portions 35, the central portion 36 and the intermediate portions 31. The portions 35 and 31 are connected by the reinforcing seams 38 and the 50 portions 36 and 31 are connected by the reinforcing seams 39. Curved strengthening bands 46 extend from the edges 23- over a portion of the contour of each pocket 3|), to the upper ends of the seams 39. A curved strengthening band 42 55 on the contour of each pocket 30 is fastened to the body portion 20 and below its adjacent band 40 and is also sewed to the latter. The ends of the bands 42 extend to the edges 22 and 23 of the said body portion. A pair of separating bands each comprises the horizontal portion 46 and I curved upwardly extending portion 41. A piece of elastic material 48 is preferably connected, to the end of each portion 46 and is sewed to the adjacent reinforced seam 38. The piece of elastic material 46 may be omitted.
The upper end of each curved portion 41 is secured to the body portion 20 adjacent to its edge 22, and the main part of the portion 41 is sewed to the band 42. The upper edge of each horizontal portion 46 is bound with a ribbon adjusting band 50, having a round edge 5| and its end 52 is loose, so that it can be fastened to the edge 22 of the body portion 20, for various adjustments.
To one of the hems 25 is connected the elastic belt portion 55, preferably of rubber having connected thereto the eyes 56 and to the other hem are connected the books 51. The latter engage the eyes 56, when the brassiere is in place on the wearer.
.A pair .of shoulder straps is each indicated 25 in its entirety by the numeral 60. The ends of each shoulder strap 60 are stitched to the body portion 20, as indicated at 6| and 62. Each shoulder strap comprises the members 63 and 64 stitched to each other. Each of the shoulder straps is padded at about its central portion, as indicated in detail in Fig. 5. The padding comprises a strip of felt 65 and a strip of ribbon 66 adjacent to the strip of felt. Both of the latter strips are stitched to the shoulder straps as indicated. When in operative position the ribbons 66 bear against the body of the wearer. Elastic bands 68 are sewed to the body portion 26 at its curved edges 24. A band 69 of non-stretchable material is fastened to the outer surface of the body portion 26.
A pair of trousers, generally made of wool, silk,' cotton, linen and the like, comprises the members 10, having the upper edge 13. The latter is fastened to the lower edge 2| of the body portion 20.
The wrapper for the brassire and bathing suit is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 30, and is generally made of wool, silk, acetate. linen and the like. The brassiere may be made of the same material.
The wrapper comprises the skirt portion 3| and the waist portion 82 with the rear upper edge 33 and front upper edge 84. A slit 85 is shown in the waist portion 32 and in the upper end of the skirt portion 8|. Loops 88 extend from one 55 edge of the wrapper 80, which engage buttons 89 adjacent to its other edge to close the slit 85.
The upper end of the rear portion of the wrapper is stitched to the shoulder straps 60, by means of the stitches 62 and the front portion of the wrapper 80 is stitched to the said shoulder straps by means of the stitching 93.
Attention is called to the openings 33 through the pockets 30, to avoid annoyance to the breasts by the return folds 21', and allow' smoothness to the outer garments of the wearer.
The elastic bands 68 of the body portion 20 of the brassiere provide means for preventing the edges 24 of the brassire cutting into the flesh of the wearer.
Various modifications may be made in the invention and the present exemplification is to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.
Having described my invention, I claim:
In a bathing suit of'the character described the combination, of a brassire comprising a body portion having outwardly extending pockets, 2. separating band opposite the interior of each pocket having its ends connected to said body portion, said body portion having hems at its ends, an elastic belt portion extending from one of said hems and having eyes connected thereto, hooks connected to the other hern to coact with said eyes, a pair of trousers extending from the lower edge of the body portion, a wrapper over said brassire and trousers comprising a skirt portion and a waist portion, said waist portion having a slit in its upper end and extending through the upper end of the skirt portion, means to detachably close said slit and shoulder straps having their ends connected to upper ends of said brassire and the waist of said wrapper.
