IMPROVEMENT IN GAME-COUNTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,137, dated January 7, 1879; application filed November 26, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VALLACE DURAND, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVhist Oounters and Game- Marhers, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to devices for counting whist and autoi'natieally marking the games; and the object is the convenience and perfection of the register.

It consists in a case with front and back dials, and indicating-hands united by a peculiar mechanism, so arranged that the movement of the front dial-plate will move also the hand on the back dial, the front dial being to count the points and the back one to mark the games.

The face-hand A, by friction, is put on the end of a stud or post, 13, outside of the dialplate 0; and this post is made fast to the back plate or dial, D. On the stud B is also placed, loose, a ratchetwheel, E, having seven teeth, and a ratchet, F, held by the spring G, engages this whecl. The hand H is made fast on a stud, I, which turns in the dial-plate D and on the inside end of the stud I is a toothed wheel, f, adapted to be set in motion by the movement of the wheel E by a pin, K, on the under side of it catching into the wheel f.

The case is put together byhaving the pins n in the plate 0 enter the holes 0 in the wheel E, which look this wheel to the plate 0.

In use, one point is counted by moving the dial-plate 0 past the hand A one space, and

when seven points have been counted the pin K catches into the wheel f and moves it so that the hand II registers 1, and so on in repetition.

Any time before seven points have been counted the hand A may be turned back for a new count without affecting the hand H; and in this way the points and games may be registered for any length of time in playing.

The same devices may be used for other games and other registering, and the number of teeth in the ratehetwheel will be varied to suit the convenience of numbers sought to be recorded.

I do not claim, broadly, a register having index-hands on front and back dials, and the one marked by the other but XV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the hands A and H, registering on the front and bacl: by the hand A being placed on the stud B, made fast to the plate 0, and the ratehetwheel E turning on the same stud, and having the pin K working into the toothed wheel f and operating the hand H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The plate 0, having the pins a to connect with the ratchet-wheel E, looking it thereto, so that when the plate 0 is turned the register is made, substantially as set forth.
