This invention relates to air conditioners and an object of the present invention is to provide a device which may be used as an air cooler, or as a heating unit, or for conditioning heated air as it 5 enters a room or the like from a furnace or analogous heating plant.
The invention together with its objects and advantages-will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 8 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 8-8 of Figure 5, and
Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring more in detail of the drawings it will be seen, that in the preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a casing 5 having a bottom 6, rear wall I, end walls 8, top wall 9, and a bodily removable front door ill.
Supported between'the end walls ll of the cabinet or casing are angle bars I I, H, which support apan or tray l3 hereinafter more fully referred to.
Above the cleats i l and ii there is suitably supported in the upper portion of the cabinet 5 a horizontal partition M providing in the upper portion of the cabinet a chamber i5.
Provided on the cleat II and on the forward edge of the partition it are strips it of rubber, felt, or other suitable yielding material, against which the inner face of the door Ill bears to provide sealing joints between the door ill and the cleat It on the one hand, and the door i0 and the partition M on the other hand.
Suitably arranged in the bottom of the cabinet 5 is a compressor H which includes among other parts a motor l8 for driving the compressor.
The compressor ll is of a water-cooled type and the water jacket of the compressor is connected in any suitable manner with a water supply line or pipe 19. The water return line for the compressor is indicated by the reference numeral 20.
The condensing fluid, which may be of any suitable type, is contained within a suitable tank ii that is connected with the compressor ll through the medium of a conduit 22.
Supported by the pan i3 adjacent one end of the pan is a refrigerant coil 23, and oneof the headers of the coil 23, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, has its outerwall pressed inwardly as at 23 to provide a partition for the header which will serve to so direct the refrigerant flowing through the header as to insure the passage of the refrigerant through each and every one of the tubes 25 that connect the headers of the coil.
The refrigerant tank M is connected with the said one header of the coil 23 through the medium of a conduit or piping 26 while the compressor H is connected to said one header of the coil 23 through the medium of piping or .a conduit 21.
Thus it will be seen that provision is made for a a close circuit connection involving compressor i'l, tank 2i and the coil 23 so that the liquid refrigerant will flow to and from the coil.
Suitably arranged within the conduit or piping 26 is anexpansion valve 28 controlled by a thermostat 29.
v For controlling the passage of air through the coil 23 from one side of the latter to the other, there is hingedly mounted at one side of the easing housing the coil 23 a damper or door 30, suitable means indicated generally at 36 being provided for securing the damper or door 30 at the desired position of adjustment.
The partition it, as clearly shown in Figure 5, is provided with an opening 32 and located immediately below the opening 32 is a suction fan 33 of suitable construction and design. The shaft for the fan 33 is journaled in bearing brackets 33 suspended from the partition as shown.
For driving the fan 33 there is mounted on the partition it within the compartment l5 an electric motor 35 that has a belt and pulley drive connection 36 with the shaft of the fan 33 as shown in Figure 5.
Also, each end wall 8 of the casing or cabinet 5 is provided adjacent the bottom thereof with air inlet openings 31. For these openings 31 there are provided at the inner sides thereof screens or filtering elements 38. Also for the openings there are provided hinged dampers 39.
There is also provided in the top 9 of the cabinet or casing 5 an air exhaust opening 40 and for this opening 40 there are provided pivoted damper plates 4|.

From the description of the invention thus far it will beseen that with the fan 23 in motion air will be drawn into the openings 3'! in the end walls of the cabinet passing upwardly of the cabinet through the space between one end of the pan or tray 83 and the adjacent end wall 8 of the cabinet at the left side of the cooling coil assembly 23. With the damper door 3d of the cooling coil assembly in open position it will be further appreciated that the air will pass through the coil assembly to be cooled, the cold air passing upwardly through the opening 32 and out into the room through the opening M3 in the top E3 of the cabinet and the opening &2 in the door in of the cabinet for lowering the room temperature. Thus it will be-seen that the devicewill serve admirably for conditioning and cooling the air of a room or the like.
Further the invention comprehends the provision of a second coil assembly M including an outer frame-like casing in which are arranged oppositely-disposed headers connected by circulating tubes, and this coil assembly, when used, is supported on the pan l3 at the end thereof remote from the coil 23.
Connected to the inlet of one of the headers of the coil id is a supply pipe d5 while a return pipe 35 is connected to the outlet of said header of the coil assembly fi l.
Arranged in the pipe 55 is a valve 67 while pipe i9 is connected with pipe d5 between the coil M and the valve t'l through the medium of piping 38 in which is arranged a valve 59.
It will thus be seen that when it is desired to make use of coil Ml as an auxiliary to coil 23 for cooling the air passing through the cabinet 5' valve il is closed and valve 69 open so that cold water from ,the source of supply will pass from the piping l9 through the valve &9 and piping 18 to circulate through the coil assembly 8%.
Coil assembly M is also provided at one side thereof with a hinged damper or door 50, means 5! being provided for securing the door at the desired adjustment. Thus with door 50 in an open position some of the air circulating through the casing 5 will-pass upwardlyofthe casing and through the coil assembly 64 from the left to the right of the assembly to passwith the air cooled by the coil 23 upwardly through the opening 32 to exhaust into the room through the openings to and M.

Internally the casing 5' is also provided in proximity to the opening 52 with vertical walls 53 and a horizontal wall 5 3 which provide an air intake compartment into which the hot air passing through the register enters.
Wall 53 is provided with an opening 55 over which is disposed a filtering element in the form of a screen or the like 56. Also for the opening 55 there are provided pivoted damper plates 5?.
It will thus be seen that with the fants in operation the hot air passing into the chamber 58 will pass through the opening 55 and upwardly through the casing 5 into the room to be heated through the openings 40 and 62.
For moistening the heated air thus passing into the casing there is provided a suitable spray nozzle 59 that extends upwardly above the pan l3 and is connected with the pipe 119 through the suitable pipe connections 68. In the piping 60 is a valve ti.
Obviously,,the water from the spray nozzle 59 will tend to settle in the tray 33 and the hot air passing upwardly through the device will become moistened by contact with the water prior tothe ventrance of the heated air into the room.
It will also be understood and appreciated that pan 33 will catch the drippings from the coils 23 and 54 as well as the water from the spray nozzle 59. The water collecting in the pan l3 will drain therefrom through themedium of a drain pipe 6i 1' that extends downwardly from the pan and outwardly of the casing through a suitable opening provided therefor in an end wall 8 of the casing or cabinet 5.
Itis thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a device of this character as well as the many uses to which the same may-be put will be had by those skilled in the art without a further detailed description thereof;
Having thus described the claimed as new is: v
1. In a device of the character described, a cabinethaving a bottom wall, end walls, a rear wall, a top wall, and a bodily removable front .door, said cabinet having in the end walls thereof adjacentthe bottom of the cabinet air inlet openings, and in the top walls, and also in said bodily removable door at the top of the latter air exhaust openings, tray supporting means in the invention what is cabinet above the bottom of the cabinet, a tray mounted on said supporting means, said tray at its respective opposite ends terminating short of the end walls of the cabinet, coil assemblies supported by the tray adjacent the respective opposite ends of the tray, a powerv driven fan mounted in the cabinet above said tray and between said coil assemblies said fan serving to draw airinto the casing through the openings in the end walls of the casing and to force said air through the openings in the top of the cabinet and the bodily removable door of'the cabinet, one of said coils being adapted to have a refrigerant medium circulated therethrough for cooling the air passing through the cabinet, and the other of said coils adapted to have either. cold water circulated therethrough whereby the second coil assembly may be used as an auxiliary air-cooling medium,-

2. In a device of the character described, a cabinet having a bottom wall, end walls, a rear wall, a top wall, and a bodily removable front door, said cabinet having in the end walls thereof adjacent thebottom of the cabinet air inlet openlugs, and in the top' walls, and also in said bodily removable door at the top of the latter air exhaust openings, tray supporting means in the cabinet above the bottom of the cabinet, a tray mounted on said supporting means, said tray at its respective opposite ends terminating short of the, end walls of the cabinet, coil assemblies supported by the tray adjacent the respective opposite ends of the tray, a power driven fan mounted in the cabinet above said tray and between said coil assemblies said fan serving to draw air into the casing through the openings in the end walls of the casing and to force said air through the openings in the top of the cabinet and the bodily removable door of. the cabinet, one of said coils being adapted to have a refrigerant medium circulated therethrough for cooling the air passing through the cabinet, and the other of said coils adapted to have either cold water circulated therethrough whereby the second coil assemblymay be used as an auxiliary air-cooling medium, or to have a heating medium such as steam, hot water, etc., circulated therethrough whereby said second coil may be used as a heating medium,
optionally, each of said coils including a hinged .bafiie at one side thereof and means associated with the coil and the baflie for holding the latter in the desired position of adjustment.
3. In a device of the character described, a cabinet having a bottom wall, end walls, a rear wall. a top wall, and a bodily removable front tray at its respective opposite ends terminating short of the end walls of the cabinet, coil assemblies supported by the tray adjacent the respective opposite ends of the tray, a power driven fan mounted in the cabinet above said tray and between said coil assemblies said fan serving to draw air into the casing through the openings in the end walls of the casing and to force said air through the openings in the top of the cabinet and the bodily removable door of the cabinet, one of said coils being adapted to have a refrigerant medium circulated therethrough for cooling the air passing through the cabinet, and the other of said coils adapted to havev either cold water circulated therethrough whereby the second coil assembly may be used as an auxiliary air-cooling medium, or to have a heating medium such as steam, 'hot water, etc., circulated therethrough whereby said second coil may be used as a heating medium, optionally, each of said coils including a hinged baffle at one side thereof and means associated with the coil and the baflle for holding the latter in the desired position of adjustment, saidcabinet also having an opening in the bottom thereof adapted to be positioned over a floor register whereby warm air from a hot air heating system may pass through the cabinet,
and a spray device mounted in the cabinet above said pan for use in humidifying' air passing through the cabinet.
