5 Claims.
Tlm's invention relates to soil conditioning and cultivating machines and has reference in particular to what may well be called a convertible type harrow, that is, one which may have its multiple spring teeth arranged to function as a customary V-shapedstyle, or may have the teeth obliquely angledwith respect to the line of draft to perform as a so-called side harrow.
structurally. Visualized and compared with prior. art harrow constructions, it will be observed that the adopted harrow is characterized by a frame unit, a beam intersecting and adjustably connected to the central portion of the frame unit, bracing means for the beam, and steering andmanipulating handles. for the walking attendant, there being a plurality of spring teeth connected with and dragging behind said frame underneath of the handle.- This general structural arrangement is, of course, common to the trade and it is also a matter of common knowl-.
edge that quick detachable and adjustable spring teeth are provided for conversion results.
The essence of the present invention is reflected in the adoption and use of a substantially rectangular frame unit provided with a plurality of improved bodily adjustable clamps so constructed as to serve as stirrup-like hangers for the shank portions of the spring teeth, the clamps and frame unit being so constructed as to permit the teeth to be disposed at direct right angles to the frame unit for individually or collectively adjusting to assume substantially oblique angled position with respect to said frame unit.
Stated more specifically, the chief novelty resides in the provision of a frame unit characterized by spaced parallel bar members having their lower edges formed with keeper notches to selectively accommodate distinguishably usable retention lugs on the block-like adapter forming part of the clamping means, said adapter being saddled in the hanger stirrup or fixture which is, in turn, secured by set screw or the like to associated retaining means cooperable with the bars of said frameunit. 1
Although novelty is predicated on the notched bar construction of the frame unit as well as the stirrup-like hanger members, the specific novelty in chief has to do with the multiple lug-equipped block-like adapter which is in effect the holder for the shank portion of the associated detachable spring tooth.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
.. In the accompanying drawings wherein like (Cl. 5515 l) numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the various views:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete multiple purpose or convertible barrow constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention showing the old as well as the new features.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the rear end portion of the arrangement depicted in Figure 1 calculated to show to advantage the general relationship of the horizontal beam with respect to the spring teeth and improved holding means therefor.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the ractangular frame unit showing the two distinguishable positions of the adapter blocks, the stirrup clamping means being omitted for clearness of illustration, one block being disposed at right angles and the other at oblique angles.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of one end portion of Figure 3, that is, a view observing the right hand end portion of Figure 3 with certain of the other features omitted for clearness of illustration of parts.
Figure 5 is what may be called a full size view of one of the multiple lug-equipped adapter blocks or members.
Figure 6 is a section taken on the plane of the line 6--6 of Figure 1.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 are additional sectional 0 views, on an enlarged scale, taken on the planes of the lines l'l, 8-8 and 99, respectively, of Figure 1.
Reference is had first to the general assemblage depicted in Figure 1 of the drawings. Here the spring teeth are denoted by the numeral ill and have downturned hooked ground-engaging ends l I as shown in Figure 2. This is, normally speaking, a five-tooth harrow and the forward ends or shank portions of the teeth Iii are adjustably clamped in holders carried by the aforementioned rectangular frame unit 12. The numeral i3 designates the brace while the numeral it indicates the beam to the forward end of which the source of propulsional power is connected. The customary attendant-controlled handles 15 are shown at the rear. The intermediate portion of the beam intersects the central portion of the frame unit l2 and is adjustably attached to the slotted extension or flange It as indicated at the point ll.
Reference being had now to Figure 3 it will be observed that the ever important frame unit I2 is of general rectangular or longitudinally elongated form and includes spaced paralleLsupporting bars or members 18 having keeper notches l9 and 20 formed in the lower surfaces or edges thereof and arranged in diagonal staggered relationship.
The adapter block is denoted by the numeral 2| and is of general rectangular form. As shown to advantage in Figure 3 the bottom of the block is formed with a channel 22 in which the shank of the tooth fits sliolably so that the tooth can be adjusted to position the hook or tooth element H toward or from the frame I2. It will be noticed in Figure 5 that one end, that is, the rear end of the block is indicated by the numeral 23, while the diagonally out or oblique forward end is differentiated by the numeral 24. A pair of transverse spaced parallel stabilizing cleats '25 are provided on the attaching side of the block, one of the cleats being close to the rear end 23 and the other one at the center of the block and both cleats being parallel to each other and parallel to said edge 23. Cooperable with these cleats are pairs of lugs 25 extending at obtuse angles in relation to the transverse cleats 25. The effect of these two sets of lugs 26, which function as teeth, is that said lugs are substantially oblique to the longitudinal dimension of the block 2! as a unit. The numeral 21 designates supplementary cleats disposed parallel to each other and in parallelism with the correspondingly inclined or oblique edge 24. A group of three teeth or lugs 28 cooperate with these cleats 21. It follows that the teeth 26, that is, both sets, and the cleats 25 function simultaneously. These are used alternately with respect to the cleats 2'! and their associated properly angled teeth 28. The teeth or lugs 28 by the way are substantially straight with respect to the longitudinal dimension of the block 21 The gist of the idea, however, is to be able to use the selected sets of teeth with respect to predetermined keeper notches 59 and 20 in the bars l8 as shown in Figure 3 to get the desired predetermined angular position of the adapter block 2| with respect to said bars l8. For example, in Figure 3 at the right it will be noticed that the teeth or lugs 26 are then engaged with the keeper notches l9 and 20. This positions the edge 23 fiiush with the bars I8, disposes the cleats 25 in contact with the inner surfaces of the bars I8 as shown in Figure 4, and positions the block 2| as a unit, at right angles to the longitudinal dimension of the frame unit l2. It follows that when the adapter block is in this position the shank portions of the teeth ID are at right angles to said frame unit l2. Then by shifting the block 2| the teeth 28 may be engaged with the notches l9 and 20 at which time the oblique edge 24 matches the bar l8, positioning said adapter block 2| diagonally and throwing the teeth ID in the same diagonal position with respect to the frame unit l2.
Attention is now invited to the hanger fixtures for adapter block 21. Each fixture is the same in construction and is denoted by the numeral 29 as shown to advantage in Figure 6. This fixture 29 is a frame the upper portion being fitted to embrace the suspension clip 39. This clip 30 rests on the upper edges of the bars I9 and, therefore, suspends the hanger fixture 29 between the bars so that said hanger fixture is in a position to, in turn, suspend the adapter block 2!. In fact, the adapter block is saddled in a stirrup-like manner in the lower hanging portion of this clamping hanger 29. Attention is also called to the set screw 3|- engaging the suspension clip or element 30. By tightening the screw the clip 39 is clamped firmly down on the upper edges of the bars l8. At the same time it binds the selected lugs 26 or 28 in the keeper notches l9- and 29. It also effectively binds the shank of the tooth in the channel 22 thus providing the desired holder or clamping means for the tooth. It follows, therefore, that the holder comprises the adapter block 2| adjustably connectible by its teeth 26 and 28 to the keeper notches l9 and 29 through the instrumentality of the set screw clamping means 29. By using the simple hanger clip or suspension element 30 and the set screw 3| and frame hanger 29, the feature 29 can be axially adjusted in conjunction with the toothed block or adapter 2| to satisfactorily obtain either of the two set positions shown in full lines in Figure 3.
It follows that with this adjustable tooth clamping or holder means it is possible to proper: ly arrange the teeth ID to function either as the conventional V-shaped harrow or angled with respect to the line of draft to serve as a so-called side harrow.
Attentionis invited to Figure 2 wherein it will be observed that the numeral 32 designates an arm adjustably mounted by a so-called rosette clamp 33 on one end of the frame 12. This arm carries a blade 34 which constitutesa dirt shield located between two of the spring teethto facilitate the operation of the teeth and to guard against easy breakage of these fragile spring teeth.
It is thought that the description taken inconnection with the drawings will enable a clear understanding of the inventionto be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
