G. 757) This application is made under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended by the act of April 30, 1928, and the invention herein described, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or 5 for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
I hereby dedicate the invention herein described to the free use of the Public in the territory of the United States of America to take effect upon the granting of a patent to me.
My invention relates to a sampling device for obtaining samples of grains stored in bulk in tanks, bins, or other bulk grain storage containers and the object of the device hereinafter described is to enable one to draw samples of grain from such containers, without having to climb down into them. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a detailed view of the entire device showing the valve closed and the metal point reversed in the tube to facilitate transportation and Fig. 2 is another view of the device with the valve open and the metal point positioned to sample grain.
The device consists of a metal tube l, fitted at one end with a solid metal point 2. This point is held in place at the lower end of the tube by means of two screws 3 on opposite sides of the 30 tube. These go through apertures in the tube,
and into threaded holes in the metal point 2.
When not in use, the screws 3 may be removed and the metal point 2 reversed in the tube to facilitate the transporting of the device, as 3 shown in Fig. 1.
At the open or top end of the tube is a valve 4 designed and positioned to close and open the upper end of the tube. The valve is supported by two rods 5 paralleling the sides of the tube l.
4 These rods 5 are held in place by two sleeves 6 fastened to and on opposite sides of the tube I. Rods 5 slide up and down through the sleeves 6. The lower ends of the rods fit, when the device is closed, into pockets I, which are also fastened to the tube I.
When the valve is opened, the lugs ID on the lower ends of both rods 5 slide up against the lower ends of sleeves 6 and stop. They are of a size to prevent their passing through the sleeves.
A metal eye bolt l2 attached to and extending upwardly from the valve 4 affords a means of attaching a rope 13. The device, with rope (one end is held by operator) attached, when dropped through an opening into a bin containing grain, plunges into the grain. It penetrates beneath the top surface of any grain in a bin sufliciently deep ordinarily to reach grain that is not chaify. After maximum penetration has been attained, the operator gives the rope a steady pull. This opens the intake valve 4 allowing grain at that point to fill the container of the device through the opening H, shown in Fig. 2. This requires but a few seconds. Next by means of the rope the operator withdraws the device filled with the desired sample of grain, from the bin.
Having fully disclosed my invention, I claim:
A grain sampling device comprising a tube, a removable weighted point fitted closely into, attached to and extending downwardly from one end of the tube, a valve at the other end of the tube designed and positioned to open and close that end of the tube, rod members rigidly attached to the valve and slidingly secured to the walls of said tube, means attached to the valve to move said rod members along the sides of the tube and means attached to the tube and rod members to limit the movement of said rod members.
