DOUBLE PRESSURE HYDRAULIC MACHINE FOR HATS Filed July 50, 1957 2 Sheets$heet 2 ATTORNEY Lil Patented Mar. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES FATE OFFICE DOUBLE PRESSURE HYDRAULIC MACHINE FOR HATS 4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a double pressure hydraulic machine for hats.
The invention has for an object the provision in a pressure hydraulic machine for hats, of a bottom forming section for supporting a hat having a crown portion and a brim portion, a top forming section cooperative with the bottom forming section to shape the hat form, and a novel construction of the top section for applying different pressures to the crown and to the brim portions of the hat form.
Heretofore, it was customary to arrange the top forming section with a single forming element which engaged the crown and the brim of a hat and which applied equal pressure to these parts.
Experiments have shown that a better hat can be produced if greater pressure is applied to the crown than to the brim. The crown requires a greater pressure since it must be stretched and formed to a greater degree. The brim requires smaller pressures to keep the texture of the hat material fine so that it feels good to the touch.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages'thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:--
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a double pressure hydraulic machine for hats constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on the center line of Fig. 2 but showing the piping for the hydraulic material, applied schematically.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 65 of Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of the bottom forming section shown in Fig. 3 but illustrated inverted.
The double pressure hydraulic machine for hats, according to this invention, includes a bottom forming section I i! for supporting a hat having a crown portion and a brim portion, a top forming section I I I l cooperative therewith, and means for forcing these sections together. The said top section is associated with. a hollow casing I2 having an open bottom side and a central projecting portion I2 The part II comprises a flexible crown forming element mounted on the bottom of the projection H The part I I comprises a flexible brim forming element mounted between the edge of said casing and on said projection. The parts H and II are preferably made of rubber and may be formed either in one or more pieces. A means is provided for supplying controlled hydraulic substance pressures to said crown and brim forming elements.
The bottom forming section I is illustrated in detail in Fig. '7 and. consists of a rubber or similar sheet material member I B formed in the shape of a hat having a crown and brim portion, and covering sheets of felt material Ni -and 50 upon the outer and inner faces thereof. The felt sheet It] extends over the brim portion of the member w The felt sheet Ill extends over the crown portion only.
The bottom forming section I0 is rested on a support element It having a rubber covered top and inner portion l3 This element I3 is removably mounted upon a support member I4. It is held in correct relative position by pegs I cooperative between these parts. The support member I4 is supported on a carriage I6 which is provided with wheels ll operating upon tracks I8 mounted on a body portion I9 of the machine. The carriage I6 is provided with a handle by which it may be drawn forward and moved rearward, as required.
The top forming section I2 is slidably supported upon the pair of vertical rods 22. More specifically, the said casing I2 has bearing portions Ii. slidably engage the rods 22. The rods 22 extend upwards and support a stationary head portion 23. Between this head portion and the casing [2 there are a pair of spaced arms 24 24'. Each pair of arms comprise separate links, the said parts 24 and 24* respectively, which are pivotally connected at their adjacent ends and at their outer ends are pivotally mounted respectively on the head 23 and the casing I2. One of the arms 24 is provided with a handle 26 by which the arm 24 may be moved to cause the casing !2 to move upwards and downwards.
The casing I2 is counter-balanced by cables 27 connected with the casing and extending upwards over pulley elements 28. The free ends of the cables 21 are provided with a counter-weight 29.
The flexible crown and brim forming elements are connected in a particular manner with the projection IZ The connection comprises a tube 30 engaging through the casing I2 coaxial with the projection I2 A nut 3i is threadedly mounted on the tube 30 and acts against the top of the casing 12. Another nut 32 is threadedly mounted on the lower end of the tube 30. This latter nut clamps an edge portion l l formed on the upper edge of the crown forming element H. A resilient washer or disc-shaped element 34 is interposed between the flange portion I and the projection H The brim forming element H and crown forming element li are integral with the flange portion i (see Fig. 5).
A means is provided for supplying separate controlled hydraulic pressures to the crown and brim forming elements. This means essentially comprises a hydraulic substance system including a supply tank 36 from which there extends a supply pipe 31. This pipe is controlled with a valve 38 and connects with a pair of branch pipes 39 and 40. The pipe 39 is controlled with a valve 4| while the pipe 40 is controlled with a valve 42.
The pipe 39 connects with the tube 30 and with a discharge pipe 3%. A hand release pressure valve 43 is interposed in the pipe system 39. The pipe 46 connects with a nipple 45 discharging into the hollow of the casing i2, and further connects with a discharge pipe 46 in which there is interposed a hand controlled relief valve 41. Pressure gauges l8 and :59 are respectively mounted upon the tube 30 and nipple 45. These pressure gauges are adapted to show the pressure within the crown forming element II and brim forming element Il By proper manipulation of the pressure valves 4| and t2 it is possible to build up the desired high pressures in the crown forming element l and the desired lower pressures on the brim forming element H The operation of the device is similar to pressure hydraulic substance machines generally known prior to this specification. It distinguishes in the operation of the machine, by obtaining different pressures for the crown and the brim. A further feature of the invention resides in the specific construction of the brim forming element H and the crown forming element H and the manner in which these parts are supported.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention. as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
