Connected with seat member l8 and extending therefrom there is provided a front webbing 35 adapted to cover the major portion of the front 38 of seat section iii. The webbing 35 is retained against the seat section by any well-known suitable means such as sewing, nailing to the framework of the seat or by riveting or by the use of snappers, not shown.

It will be noted from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that a chair covering is provided for automobiles, trains, airships, aeroplanes and the like where the upholstering is protected from wear, tear and soiling. The covering as made according to the present invention is provided with retaining depending parts, whereby the members covering the back rest and seat sections are re tained in smooth surfaced condition. Furthermore, said covering members cannot be moved out of the relative position in which they are originally set or mounted since the cylinder members in the hems of the

When one sits on the seat as shown in Fig. 3, his body weight forces the seat l9 downward and back rest l2 inward thereby depressing the same. In such case members H and i8 are not displaced since they are held in relative position by resilient hinge 2 I. When the person rises from the chair and the back rest l2 and seat section #9 return to normal position, members H and I8 cannot be upwardly displaced or moved apart since the cylinders in the hems of

While the present invention has been described as used in connection with an automobile chair as shown in the accompanying drawing, it is to be understood that its use is not limited thereto.

It is to be further understood that various changes as to form, arrangement of parts and use of materials may be made without departing from.

We claim:

1. In combination with an upholstered chair having a removable seat portion, a flexible covering device comprising a plurality of matting members for the chair, having flexible marginal beading to prevent ravelling of said matting, webbing extending from the major portion of the outer edge of each of the members in engagement with adjacent portions of the chair, a hinge interconnecting a portion of the adjacent parallel edges of the matting members, a plurality of spaced Webbedflaps extending from the adjacent edges of each of the matting members having enlarged terminal portions for fitting between the back and seat portions of the chair the terminal portions-of one edge abutting those on the adjacent edge and those on one of the edges forming obstructions to those on the adjacent edge to retain the matting members in position against the seating portion of the chair and prevent sliding of the same when in use.

2. The combination with a chair having a back rest and a removable seat section, of a covering device having a plurality of matting coverings for the seat section and the back rest of the chair respectively, a flexible member interconnecting the coverings, along a portion of their adjacent edges, a webbing extending from the major portion of the edge of each of the coverings opposed to the interconnecting member and adapted to be fixed to the free ends of the seat and back rest sections and retain the coverings in flush position against the seating and back rest portions of the chair surface, and enlarged anchoring means depending from the unconnected portions of the adjacent edges of the coverings and extending between the seat section and the back rest of the chair to prevent displacement of the coverings from the chair when in operation.

A covering device according to claim 2, in which the enlarged means comprise flaps having hems at their free ends and having cylindrical removable members in the hems for weighting down the coverings and retain the same in position against the seat section and the back rest of the chair one of said cylindrical members forming an obstruction and abutment for the other to prevent displacement thereof.

4. A covering device for upholstered automobile seats'and the like, having a back rest and a removable seat section, comprising a plurality of flexible matting coverings for the back rest and the seat section said coverings having marginal headings to prevent ravelling of the matting thereon, a reinforcing flap webbing extending,

from the major portion of one edge of each covering for engagement with the back rest and seat section, means interconnecting a portion of the adjacent marginal edges of the coverings adapted to retain the coverings 1n the same relative positions when the seat is in use, and a plurality of spaced weighted flaps depending from each of the coverings into the space between the back rest and seat section forming anchors for preventing displacement of the coverings upon release of pressure on the seat section and back rest.
