Description

Feb. 22, 1938. I M J. AIRINGTON 2,109,377 I VENDING DEVICE Filed May 3, 1935 INVENTOR I Marques J. flii'ingfon ATTORNEY tains the bottle in any Patented Feb. 22, 1938 Marques J. Airington,
to The Airington Kansas City, Mo., assignor mpany, Kansas City, Mo.,
a corporation of Missouri Application May 3, 1935, Serial 'No. 19,648
12 Claims.
This invention relates to vending devices and particularly to those of that character for vending bottled goods and has for its principal object to provide for selectively vending any one of a plurality of different bottled goods on display.
It is also an important object of the present invention to provide a vending device with a manually operated selector that is readily engaged with the neck of a selected bottle and securely reposition that it may be tipped incidental to inserting the bottle into the vending mechanism.
Other important objects of the invention are to provide an improved vending mechanism wherein the bottle is readily placed by the selector; and to provide the selector with means for engaging the necks of different size bottles that may be on display in the machine.
In accomplishing these-and other objects of the invention, as hereinafter pointed out, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display device showing the selector embodying the features of the present invention by which a bottle is moved relative to the dispensing mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bottle selector.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the hook end of the selector showing one of the hooks in engagement with the neck of a bottle.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the hook held in a different position for supporting the bottle.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
I designates a vending apparatus which includes a display case 2 adapted to contain bottled goods or the like of different sizes.
In order to selectively engage any one of the bottles 3 in the case 2 without removal of more than the bottle selected, I provide a selector 4 including a rod 5 operable through a portion of the display case. Fixed on the lower end of the rod is a head 6 having a forwardly extending lug 'l on the end thereof. Pivotally mounted on the head are yoke shaped arms 8 and 9 of differential size so that either one or the other may be engaged with a bottle depending upon the size of the neck of the bottle selected.
The yokes 8 and 9 are of identical shape and each includes arms l0 and l I terminating in upwardly curved hook members l2 and I3 having knob-like stop portions at the ends thereof, the hooks having facing grooves l 4 in the upper faces thereof to accommodate necks of the bottles 3. 7
The cross portion l6 of each yoke is adapted to engage with the lug 1 to limit swinging movement of the yoke relatively to the head 6 to substantially a semicircle as now to be described. Extending rearwardly of the cross portion of each yoke are pairs of ears I! and I8 that straddle the free end of the head and are pivotally connected thereto by pin [9 and 20.
The hooks are thus free to swing about the head but are prevented from another by the lug 1 which also supports the hooks in rigid position when they engage a bottle as shown in Fig. 4. However, when the hooked ends are engaged with a bottle in the manner shown in Fig. 3, the hook 8, for example, swings freely upon the pin Hi.
In using a device constructed as described, any one of the bottles contained in the display case may be selectively engaged with one of the hooks depending upon the relative sizes thereof and lifted for suitable disposal.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that I have provided a dispensing devicefor bottled goods which may be readily manipulated by the customer and that the. customer may select any one of the bottles contained in the display case.
It is also apparent that due to the grooves and the bead [5 on one of the stop portions of the hooks upon theend of the 5 selector, the selected bottle is securely retained therebyuntil it is ready to be disposed of, whereupon the selector may be readily released from the bottle by merely removing the bottle from contact with the selector hooks.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a selector of the character described, a rod, a head on the rod having a stop lug, and a pair of yoke shaped hook members of differential size pivotally mounted on said head and engageable with said lug to selectively support one of said hook members in rigid relation with said head when engaged with a bottle.
2. A selector of the character described including a rod having stop means, a pair of yokeshaped hooks pivotally mounted on said rod and respectively engageable with said stop means for limiting movement of the hooks toward each other when one hook is engaged with a bottle, said hooks having upwardly turned ends for selectively cradlingly engaging the neck of a bottle and having facing grooves forming a seat for a bead on the neck of said bottle for retaining the bottle when tipped to different positions.
interfering with one 3. A selector of the character described including a rod having 2. lug, a plurality of yokes having ears sleeved over the rod and having pivotal connection therewith, whereby the yokes are free to pivot outwardly and are retained against interference with each other when pivoted inwardly incidental to engagement with said lug, said yokes having pairs of arms curved in reverse relation to each other and spaced apart for selectively cradlingly engaging the neck of a bottle, said pairs of arms having facing grooves for seating a bead on the neck of a selected bottle to securely retain the bottle against dropping when tipped to any position incidental to pivotal movement of the yokes in response to movement of the rod.
4. A selector of the character described including a rod, a head on the rod having a forwardly projecting lug, a plurality of yokes having rearwardly extending spaced ears sleeved over opposite sides of the head and having pivotal connection therewith, whereby the yokes are free to pivot outwardly away from the head and are retained against interference with each other when pivoted inwardly toward said head incidental to engagement with said lug, said yokes having pairs of outwardly extending arms curved in reverse relation to each other and spaced apart for selectively cradlingly engaging the neck of a bottle, said pairs of arms having facing grooves for seating the head on the neck of a selected bottle and to securely retain the bot tle from dropping when tipped to any position incidental to pivotal movement of the yokes in response to movement of the rod.
5. A selector of the character described including a rod having a stop portion, and a yokeshaped hook having inwardly facing grooves pivotally supported on said rod and engageable with said stop portion for limiting movement of the hook to substantially a semicircle, whereby the hook remains rigid when a selected article is being lifted while the hook is in upwardly extending position.
said yoke having a pair of outwardly extending upwardly curved arms provided with inwardly facing grooves spaced apart for cradingly engaging a selected article.
'7. A selector of the character described including a rod having stop means, and a pair of yokeshaped hooks having inwardly facing grooves pivotally mounted on said rod and respectively engageable with said stop means for limiting movement of the hooks toward each other when one hook is engaged with an article.
8. A selector of the character described including a rod having a lug, and a plurality of yokes having ears sleeved over the rod and having pivotal connection therewith, whereby the yokes are free to pivot outwardly and are retained against interference with each other when pivoted inwardly incidental to engagement with said lug, said yokes having pairs of arms curved in reverse relation to each other and spaced apart for selectively cradlingly engaging a selected article.
9. A selector of the character described including a rod, a head on the rod having a forwardly projecting lug, and a plurality of yokes having rearwardly extending spaced ears sleeved over opposite sides of the head. and having pivotal connection therewith, whereby the yokes are free to pivot outwardly away from the head and are retained against interference with each other when pivoted inwardly toward said head incidental to engagement with said lug, said yokes having pairs of outwardly extending arms curved in reverse relation to each other and spaced apart for selectively cradlingly engaging a selected article.
10. A selector of the character described including a rod, and a yoke-shaped hook on said rod having inwardly facing grooves for supporting an article while the hook is in upwardly extending position.
11. A selector of the character described including a rod, and a yoke-shaped hook on said rod having knob-like stop portions for retaining an article thereon while the hook is in upwardly extending position.
12. A selector of the character described including a rod, and a yoke-shaped hook on said rod having inwardly facing grooves and knoblike stop portions for supporting and retaining an article thereon.
